Eagles had more hitouts, but Hickey improving.
I meant Hickey had more hit outs then anyone else on the ground.
So he should of, he spent more time in the Ruck than anyone else, (double really), yet still lost the hitouts to he's opponents, NicNat in the best players for eagles, didn't see hickeys name in there!!!!!

Something to say: Hickey is the softest player in the league and another loss with him as #1 Ruck!!!!!
Don't be a fuckiing moron all your life

How many losses have Carlton had with Cripps as their number #1 mid and Kreuzer as #1 ruck?

How many losses have we had with Jimmy Webster playing in the team?

How many losses have we had with Jack Steven as our #1 rover? In other words your constant repetition about losses and Hickey in the team is the same as saying Jack Steven and Jimmy Webster should be replaced because we have had a lot of losses when they're playing...

The Saints were close to wooden spooners when Hickey came into the line up. Our team is rebuilding. What the fuuuck do you expect other than a heap of losses?

From a ruckman, you expect more, Tom Hickey is too soft to be successful at the level, waste of a first rnd pick!!!!!! Simple, he provides no physical assistance to any of our mids and does not hurt the opposition with he's cheap possession's or in any physical sense!!!!! Way to timid!!!!!

Softest player to pull on the jumper!!!!!!

Saints were 1 and 1 when Hickey started playing this year!!!!!

Lewis up against Billy this weekend, provided Billy has recovered from his illness.

Should be interesting and maybe the outcome will determine which one of the two we will keep on the list next year.

Not really. We've got too many ruckman now. One of them will probably go. Most likely Pierce, given he's not even playing with Sandy at the moment.

Pierce is a long way ahead of Longer.
Longer is a waste of AFL space. Maybe a 3rd rnd pick from Cats for him

Neither of them are worth a cracker on the trade table. Unless we recruit a ready ruckman we'll have to retain Longer as a back-up. Lewis Pierce can and should treasure the goal he kicked in his lone appearance.

Funny, most were saying the reverse last year - do we retain Hickey as back up to Longer? He acted as back up vs Essendon last year and was woeful.

The year before is was Hickey with Longer as backup.

Billy's turn in 2019.

A fully fit Longer is number 1, it is as simple as that!!!!!

If we want to play finals and be successful, we carnt carry a non physical wet cardboard cut out as our first ruck!!!!!

Leaving to one side the strong opinions expressed here as to which of the two is better, given they're both fit at the moment, it looks as though the selectors prefer Hickey. Personally I've never met any supporter of another AFL club that has shown the slightest interest, since Ben McEvoy's departure, in having their club recruit ANY of our ruckmen (and that was my point). Well that's not quite true. The day Holmes towelled up Bellchambers in the VFL at TBBO a couple of years ago the Essendon camp showed a flicker of interest but Jason just couldn't repeat that performance consistently.

Well, your incorrect for starters, Longer hasn't been fit since last year, struggled through preseason and hasn't been able to get right sense, through one illness/injury or another!!!!!

If both players were fully fit, Longer would be playing, it's that simple, our coaches prefer a physical presence in the middle over cheap possies around the ground!!!!!

stonecold ..
We should look for a 140 kg, 2.10 metre tall wrestler, if it's about physical presence.
A ruckman needs to be a footballer, above all, around the ground - a footballer as good as Grundy would be nice - and I'll take his cheap 23 possession average any day (as would most midfielders).
Against WCE, we won the clearances around the ground - we had a healthy 7 more clearances - which suggests something I always knew - that hitouts are cheap.
It's the possies that are valuable.

Don't class Grundy's possies as being 'Cheap'!!!!!

But if your putting Hickey in Grundy's class, you've lost the plot!!!!!

Grundy is what we don't have!!!!!

Freo interested in Longer (not Hickey). Probably Sandi's last year.

Lewie was sitting on the bench with the Sandy interchange players on Saturday.
Interesting considering he's playing against them this week.

FF! Just in case you haven't worked it out ... only Collingwood has Grundy. Before the Adelaide game, you'd have backed in Sauce Jacobs to give him a hiding but alas, not even the bigger, more experienced body of Jacobs could achieve that.

It's not about size or physicality - it's about what your mids do at the contests - either roving to their own ruck OR the opposition. Do you honestly think that Collingwood's mids would do better in clearances roving to Hickey than ours do? Of course they would - they're a better, more balanced, more skilled group of mids. Conversely - I suspect ours would only do marginally better than present if they were roving to Grundy.

Personally - I'd love a combination of Longer's physicality and Hickey's agility / around the ground possession-gathering rolled into one player. That would be ideal. But they don't grow on trees. But it's certainly not one attribute exclusively over the other either.

Your just repeating me!!!!!

Hickey is NOT the answer, it's as easy as that!!!!!

I would also like to know how many games some posters have actually played in the ruck, cause many of you don't seem to know much about it!!!!!

Especially those that gave Hickey votes on the weekend against NicNat, when the experts didn't rate Hickey's game!!!!!
