Pokies at Moorabbin
I'm really loving the return to Moorabbin. It was a fantastic experience to go there to watch our last two interstate games. 300 or so people made it yesterday, which made for a terrific atmosphere. But I hate to say it, the facilities are dragged down a notch by the scourge of pokies. Of course this year there has been a backlash against those bastard machines, particularly this year with them coming under a little more scrutiny. They just kill culture and kill people's livelihoods, there's just no convincing me otherwise!
This leads to me asking: does the club really depend on them that much?
North Melbourne have been pokie-free for some time and it looks like a few other clubs will be following suit. St.Kilda Football Club in recent time has been about social change etc, and having pokies seems to only detract from that ethos. Perhaps it's about time the club made a great example for social change and did away with it. Leave it to crooks like Jeff Kennett, who really don't give a stuff about the well being of the greater community when it comes down to the almighty dollar. Anyway, you get the message.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
If people are going to invest their hard earned into the Pokie Machines - we may as well profit from it - it is legal and a good business model.
I think at some times I have even lost $20.00 into one of them

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
Yep. All for it.
Gamblers will put their dosh in the machines whether we have them or not. Might as well make a profit out of it if they choose Moorabbin to have a punt. No one cares if we have pokies or not. More $, better footy club. Simple.
Should put a TAB in there too.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
Moral view - they are a parasitic cancer on our society as they exploit people with gambling addictions and we should have nothing to do with them.
Practical view - as per Parkeysainter is that gamblers are losers with no will power or sense of self worth who will blow their money anyway.
So better we benefit from their folly than the Sandbelt Hotel.
So do we want to feel good about ourselves or have a revenue stream?

I don’t care if people are dumb enough to blow their money on a computer designed to take more money than it gives out.
But pokies do kill the vibe and atmosphere of a venue. So it depends on what the club feels is more important.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
I will. No one really gives a s*** if the Saints have a 100 or 200 pokies. I certainly don't. Sure many others are the same. The pokies are just a very small part of ST KFC. I don't see any protestors at Moorabbin bar the crazy old hag that took it to Kingston Council many years back...oh and that d**khead senator Nick Xenephon from SA. As someone else said, why give that pokie money to the Sandbelt Hotel or Tudor Inn which are down the road instead of an AFL footy club in our Sainters.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
The best way to stick it up the poker machine industry is to boycott Woolworths.
Woolworths are "The Pokie" people.
They own more pokies than anyone else in Australia.
Sing along with their "Woolie woolie - Pokie pokie" jingle!
It is Woolworths that inflict suffering on these weak minded addicts.
Woolworths prey on their stupidity.
Woolworths business model is to exploit them and extract as much money from them as quickly as possible.
Woolworths are morally bankrupt.
DO NOT SHOP AT WOOLWORTHS - EVER!!

Yeah, but all our super/shares are invested in companies like Woolworths or whoever they trade under. Just like the banks, power, telco and mining companies.Enrico_Misso wrote: ↑Mon 09 Jul 2018 11:07pm The best way to stick it up the poker machine industry is to boycott Woolworths.

The losers just go somewhere else that has pokies.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
I'd like to see the state government ban pokie machines. There is nothing good about them, a tax on stupid people is just morally wrong.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
Agree, they should be banned or at least have measures put in place that severely restricts them. I give a s*** that StKFC has pokies. It’s not ok by me. The argument that people will use them anyway so we might as well have them is just another example of the “f*** you, I’m alright Jack” attitude that is so prevalent and damaging in our culture. If something is morally bankrupt, the fact that other people are promoting morally bankrupt behaviour is not a reason for me to do it too. There’s no integrity in that.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
Love them or hate them or don't care, the pokies are staying at Moorabbin. The new complex (RSEA Park) has a purpose built room for them which forms part of Moorabbin Social. They don't look they're disappearing anytime soon...never actually so more $ for the Saints which is great.

Re: Pokies at Moorabbin
Australia has 20% of the worlds poker machines. At a guess, I'd say another 40% are in Las Vegas.
This means Australia has a disproportionate share of the worlds poker machines.
Poker Machines cause families financial hardship, depression and suicide. Naturally they are banned in many countries.
On the surface the AFL is very supportive of all Political Correct causes, and yet the majority of it's clubs are financed by these sinister machines.
