No mention of Freeman in the best players, surely if he’s had it 37 times and kicked a goal he deserves to be in the best players!!

Rice too good for VFL, should come back in if match committee has any brains. Give Gilbert a farewell at some point and drop mav.

You know it really beggars belief that the Saints can target a player, have him for 3 years (though admittedly his games played has no equalled that), but that our coaches cannot have in that period developed a player to play like that want him too.

You really have to wonder about our development coaches.

Whilst I appreciate what he does when he hasn't got it is a work in progress, a player getting it 35 times and using it with over 70% efficiency is something we could use right now I would have thought.

Watched the game definitely in our best players.

It's a massive problem when our putrid coaching effectively extends to our development squad.

Sandy dish up exactly the same tripe as the 1's.

Saints utility Ben Paton was among Sandringham's best to press his case for his senior debut.

"Our intent and endeavour were pretty strong, but we didn’t take our opportunities."
Aaron Hamill

Ben Paton has continued his impressive run of form in the VFL, being named in the best despite his side’s 31-point defeat at the hands of Box Hill at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

Finishing with 21 disposals and six tackles, the aggressive, in-form utility once again puts his hand up for an AFL debut, along with another young Saint in Nathan Freeman (37 disposals, 13 marks).

In what was the Zebras’ final home game of the season, they conceded the first four goals of the game to Box Hill before finally posting their first major just before quarter time.

Sandringham rued a wasteful 2.6 in the second term, as Chris Newman’s Hawks retained the lead all afternoon.

With Billy Longer a travelling emergency for the Saints, coach Aaron Hamill was forced to use draft prospect Hayden McLean, but the ex-TAC Cup ruckman was up against it, with the Zebras dominated in the hit-outs (69-15).

Although his side conceded 55 inside-50s for the match, Sandringham head coach Aaron Hamill was pleased with the effort but frustrated by the inability to convert when it mattered.

“Our intent and endeavour were pretty strong, but we didn’t take our opportunities and quality teams like Box Hill make you pay going back the other way, which was frustrating to watch,” Hamill told saints.com.au.

“We were rapt to get Darren Minchington (16 disposals, five tackles) through the game after his injuries this year and Ben Long through 80 minutes of game-time as well.”

The coach was also impressed with the games of Bailey Rice (23 disposals, five marks, six rebound-50s) and utility Hugh Goddard (18 disposals, 10 marks), who both stood up in a defence under relentless pressure.

“Bailey Rice and Hugh Goddard were really strong for us down back. Our defenders have been under some real heat at times this year, but those boys continue to work well together.

“Defensively, Hugh has improved out of sight one-on-one, and he’s been really solid the last six weeks in particular. But today was one of his better games, which is just great for him to get some continuity.”

Hamill also praised the first-year development of Ben Paton and his flexibility to play different roles through the midfield and at both ends of the ground.

Sandringham returns from their upcoming bye to one of the VFL’s toughest assignments – an away fixture against the Casey Demons at 2pm on Saturday August 11.

Sandringham 1.1 3.7 4.8 6.11 (47)
Box Hill Hawks 4.6 6.8 7.10 11.12 (78)

Goals: Owens 2, Haidon, Freeman, McLean, Nissenbaum
Best: Paton, Rice, Goddard, Noone, Seccull, McLean

No 6. The young ruckman McLean at Sandy is worth rookie drafting and developing IMO. He is only 19 and showed plenty against a more mature ruckman. He is a good prospect. Very young still.

Paton, Goddard, Freeman and Rice all very good. It seems Goddard is turning a corner lately and getting fitness and form into his body.

I notice Freeman wasn't included in best. WTF.

The guy who just lost the hitouts 69 - 15 ?

I reckon a 19 YO ruckmen is probably the last thing we need right now.

Did you watch the game at all? Tom Lamb played in the ruck at times which doesn't help the stats plus McClean is 19. He's basically just out of the TAC. He actually played quite well against a more mature ruck.

We need to develop a new ruckman IMO longterm hence rookie draft only. If not, keep developing him at Sandy for another year. He is a chance to get drafted this year by an AFL club. He was very unlucky last year not to get drafted according to all reports.

Yeah. Bit weird as he was Sandy's best.

I missed the last qtr to be fair but from what I saw Freeman got a lot of the ball but cheaply. I.e. standing at the back of congestion and getting it handballed to him and then either a quick handball or kick on. Racks up the the stats but not overly damaging. It was bad conditions so long kicks were not going to work but it was a perfect time for him to sprint and trust his body. He didn't and that is why he is yet to debut. Richo has said as much. We cant have someone in the AFL team that is scared or worried about sprinting as the game goes up a level as we all know.
If he starts sprinting again he will play Afl, if he doesn't he may not or get a thanks for the efforts game and get de-listed at year end

So the ruckmen who lost hitouts 4:1 was in the best but not a guy with 37 touches, 13 marks and a goal?

Seems legit.

Strange I know but I didn't write the match summary.
