Re: Ruckman
Yep with the talent pool really bare for our much desired high-end talent; coupled with the obvious logic of who the bloddy hell isn't in the market for high-end talent, we really need to come up with a plan B of how to procure said high-end talent.
One way is to spend our "war chest" on bringing in 2 to 3 players (midfielders) that have got the potential to develop into the grade. It's a lower risk strategy than going after the messiah.

Re: Ruckman
It’s a bit of a joke that the combination of Pierce and Marshal wasn’t developed more this year. Looks like there’s a lot of potential.

Re: Ruckman
Marshall looks extremely likely. If the club are serious about chasing after Lycett then the AFL should step in and slap the club with a fine for stupidity.

Re: Ruckman
Lycett and Marshall play in the same team.
Need to trade Paddy, Marshall and Battle are streaks Infront of him as forwards.
Marshall also rucks, Paddy does not.
Try for a second rounder for Paddy this year.

If Marshall makes it as a forward, then he is the guy that rucks for 10min a quarter for a chop out

Re: Ruckman
Pierce was terrible tonight 9 possessions 14 HO compared to Goldstein 20 possessions and 27 HO.
We are really bad in the ruck department.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

He won the first quarter convincingly and competed all day even if Goldstein wore him down and gained the ascendency.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Sun 26 Aug 2018 10:08pmPierce was terrible tonight 9 possessions 14 HO compared to Goldstein 20 possessions and 27 HO.

Has played 6 games and clearly a better prospect than both Longer and Hickey

Re: Ruckman
I reckon after last week with McEvoy hurting us on the scoreboard the coaches should have instructed Pierce better. In a close game Goldie's 2 goals were very timely and damaging. Not sure if it was on field leadership and talking that allowed it to happen or just a lapse in fitness or concentration, or as I suspect just poor coachingJacks Back wrote: ↑Sun 26 Aug 2018 10:08pmPierce was terrible tonight 9 possessions 14 HO compared to Goldstein 20 possessions and 27 HO.

Re: Ruckman
Pierce is very young and inexperienced, which showed against Goldstein yesterday. Pierce should have learned a lot about both ground positioning and ruckwork. I like his athleticism. He will improve a hell of a lot with more games.
Longer is reasonably good in ruck duels, but far too slow, no marking ability and won't kick the ball - handballs only. Time to go.
Hickey at best, is a fill-in ruckman while others develop.

Re: Ruckman
Gonna be a learning curve for him.
I mean, just imagine if he had half of the game time that we have GIFTED Longer and Hick over the past three years.

"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....

Re: Ruckman
It’s interesting isn’t it.
He could be anything, this kid, but the way we develop players McCartin will be preferred to him (until the inevitable injury) on the basis of being a high draft pick.
Selection must be based on form. No exceptions, no personal favourites.

Re: Ruckman
Lycett is dead-set ordinary… Hickey is comfortably a better ruckmen.
If we pay that spud 7-800K we should give it away.
Lycett this week… 17 hitouts - ONLY TWO to advantage, 8 disposals, 2 marks.
The only way this year could possibly get any worse is if we go and recruit Lycett and Hannaberry for 1.5 million PA.

Re: Ruckman
Goldstein is a very good player - I would think Preuss may be kept out of the side for the next year or 2 - this is an opportunity for us to make a move - saints need to make some bold moves - Preuss could be a very big improvement on what we have - I doubt he could be worse than having Longer on the list even the gamble was a disasterskeptic wrote: ↑Sun 26 Aug 2018 11:01pmHe won the first quarter convincingly and competed all day even if Goldstein wore him down and gained the ascendency.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Sun 26 Aug 2018 10:08pmPierce was terrible tonight 9 possessions 14 HO compared to Goldstein 20 possessions and 27 HO.

Re: Ruckman
Gifted games? Some people have poor memories. Hickey and Longer have swapped No.1 ruck due mainly to injuries, with Longer having a good 2015, Hickey the same in 2016, and Longer pretty good in 2017. 2018 was not good, with Longer not fit and Hickey Ok but not setting the world on fire.
In that time Pierce was doing nothing in the 2s to warrant selection, except for this year. He was amongst other ruckman at Sandy, but when he got a go did not show much at all. So any games in the firsts before the latter part of this year would have been a GIFT to him.
Showing a bit more now, but imo the jury is still well out.

Re: Ruckman
Cant continue with Longer and Hickey, they gave basically not much. Got hitouts but not to advantage and had no impact around the ground. Thats got nothing to do with memories. If the saints persist with those 2 in the ruck, you can kiss the 2019 season goodbye right now.

Re: Ruckman
Unless we get Lycett (not convinced about that either) or another ruckman we will have to keep at least one of Hickey or Longer. Still well ahead of Pierce.chico2001 wrote: ↑Mon 27 Aug 2018 5:57pm Cant continue with Longer and Hickey, they gave basically not much. Re: Ruckman
yes, either or. The top 10-12 sides in the comp have a good ruckman, vitally important that you have a good one and we need a vigorous type to give Steven and co a good run through. Preuss would have to be worth a look. Anything to get back up the ladder again. Cant see that any of those top 12 ruckman would be too worried about having to face up to the current lot we have.
