the virtue and the folly,
the necessity to say,
There's nothin' wrong with being
Straight, white and gay,
Son have your eggs,
each and every way
Cause there's nothing wrong with being...
Actually, I read that we changed to Red, Yellow and Black to show sympathy for Belgium through which the western front trenches were...eh..entrenched.
Germany's flag was Red, White and Black at the time, so maybe half a dozen of one, half a dozen the other. There were significant numbers of Germans in Oz then too, I think more towards Adelaide and on the Murray.
We did, I believe have a gold stripe at some point, maybe when we spit/merged with Prahran or South Yarra??
I think the gold stripe is kinda cool and goes with black, red and white if thin.

" I believe the Saints had the German colours circa the great war or something similar and changed to be more politically correct. (Yes current CEO echoes that spirit). It will be a backs to the wall season, however I think we have a good core of players that can win more games than last year, say 8, if they are allowed to. Generals Lade and Ratten will probably see to that on game day. The Club has backed itself into a bloody minded position in regards to AR (think Gen. Haigh and trench warfare) so unless the playing group efforts are abysmal he will see out the year and leave with a good conduct medal at season's end much to Finnis' relief. We can regoup al la Rourkes Drift and shine in 2020 under General Improvement."
"There was no political correctness bulls*** in those days.
The Saints changed their colours to those of Belgium, an allied nation under siege by the Germans, from those of our sworn enemy."

Those were the days, no political correctness alright. You could point your pistol, dive in to their trench, blast with your cannon and all sorts of fine expressions without it sounding like some kind of campy euphemism. It's about time all things political and correct were removed from society before the children stumble into a gender neutral ablutions receptacle booth and are scarred for life at the sight of some he-she monstrosity.

Battle of Britain mentality?
Don't forget the RAAF's Flight Sergeant Miller who flew Mosquito fighter bombers over occupied Europe during the war.
Also found the time to play a few games for the greatest footy club in the world.

Everyone else in the squadron had arrived back from a sortie over Germany. Miller wobbled in half an hour late with a his plane all shot up.
Hugely relieved he’d not been shot down, they asked him, “Why so late?”
“I took a detour back over Bonn. Always wanted to see where Beethoven was born.”

Saints are feeling a little more Dunkirk than BOB at the moment.
Beware if Richo ask all members to drive road worthy vehicles to RSEA park to pick up players.

Right... Yorkeys got it!
I didn't realize Keith MIller was a St Kilda player! And kicked 8 goals once. What a hero! Square jaw, nice hair, fighter pilot, test all-rounder, opening bowler, capable batsman and VFL player. Reminds me of myself. (in an abstract sort of way) He played 50 games and I assume would have played many more if not for the war.
And Joffa, you think Dunkirk is a better analogy? If it is Dunkirk, it sounds like we are trying to escape, running away. I think we have accepted Hanners might be iffy, McCartin and Roberton are in mothballs and our ring-ins - some poster aptly said that they were the Poles - I think we have realized we are on an island now, and we are ready to fight for it! Gold Coast is probably a feinting attack and we should not take too much either way. From Round two the heavy bombers are on their way, and we go up to fight! I am getting carried away again, Tally Ho!

Saynta,
Sorry to labour this, and moving on from my BoB thing, reading some of the posts on the thread I can't tell if there is some irony going on or not.
I am taking your comment as literally as possible, meaning, that back 'then' , people didn't go out of their way to make statements that would be politically 'watertight' because there was no need to. Is that right?

I was just pointing out that when the saints changed the white in their jumper to yellow there was no such thing as being political correct.
It was done to support an allied country being invaded by the Germans.
Being political correct is more a thing of the 21st century rather than the 20th.
You were right though that back then people were more free to express an opinion without fear of repercussions than they are now.
Some would argue that that's a good thing, others would disagree.

I thought the Battle of Britain was when Alistair Clarkson went feral and sniped a bunch of Caaaarlton players off the ball?
One wonders with suspensions if our list runs deep enough to keep that up for 6 rounds.

IMHO, our greatest ever cricketing all-rounder. And his stats' would be soooooo much better, if he hadn't so loathed 'kicking an opponent when they're down'. Certainly not an adherent of the 'never give a sucker an even break' school of thought.
Amazing 'character'. Amazing life story. (Though, if there had to be world war, it sure came at the right time for Keith Miller.) You'd think someone had written a novel.
This is a long long read, but I guarantee that it's more than worth it for those who take up the offer.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Miller
And after reading it (for those who do ), try and tell me that the Keith Miller persona doesn't, pretty much perfectly, match that of our beloved maverick non-conformist footy club.

Keith Miller also had a team mate at both St Kilda, and 'The Invincibles'.
The St Kilda forward registered a six-goal haul against Geelong in round eight, helping to secure an away win, and scored 23 goals in the last six matches, including five in each of the last three matches ...he came second in the club Best and Fairest.

I don't wanna bring this down. I was so intrigued about Miller I did some web browsing. He was such a superman. And watching him bowl off five steps like an Indian spinner is amazing. My flippant remark about his hero status and my likeness to him..hoho..well, it just seemed too good to be true, and alas, by the sounds of his life after cricket, it is a tale of too much of this and too little of that. https://www.theroar.com.au/2009/04/29/t ... th-miller/Dave McNamara wrote: ↑Tue 19 Mar 2019 9:22pm Keith Miller also had a team mate at both St Kilda, and 'The Invincibles'.

But take nothing away from the guy's heroic contribution to our sporting and national pride. He was just as we all are, fallible and human. And as Bob Hawke once said in an interview, fending off the inevitable distaste at his later marriage, 'I married the woman I wanted to, and she's not the one people wanted me to, but so what..too bad..' (I can't remember his exact words, but that was the gist of it)
As a sportsman and war hero, I wonder what Miller would say to us supporters and the players in the coming weeks.
This season is like nothing I can remember. Partly because I've gotten psyched up by joining the SS community. And what a roller-coaster it has been. We were writing that Paddy is back just ten days ago...and now, when we look at the line-up for the Gold Coast game, it doesn't look too flash. So who knows. No one in the media gives us a chance to get out of the bottom four, and plenty now say bottom two.
Bookies are paying 3.90 for the Gold Coast to beat us.

We're more like the Germans, about a month before everyone got to Berlin.
2010 GF Replay was the moment we reached Stalingrad. Thought we were about to take on the world.

Re: "Battle or Britain" mentality for Rounds 1 - 6
Damn, this war imagery is sticking now.
Berlin Bunker is apt for the coach and his crew surrounded by goons and concrete walls replete with propaganda minister (media officer).
I hope 2010 wasn't Stalingrad, but boy 2011 looks like post-Stalingrad. Immediate retreat and collapse and then re-group mid-season to stabilize the lines, exactly like the German thing when they retreated west, re-grouped and re-captured ground. We had won two games after Round Nine! ..and yet still finished 6th after dropping three in a row late season.
Only for 2012, 9th (Battle of Kursk 1943?).
Then we have to look at the u-Boats to describe our trajectory.
Hitler spoke of 'Miracle Weapons' and I suppose we may have thought we had a couple. Then their was the Hitler Youth..ha..nope, the volsstrom, their version of 'Dad's Army' except they had real tanks blowing them up.
Damn the gloom. It's only a game! Somehow, we will summon the prophets for divine inspiration! We are Saints, for 'g&d's sake!' For heaven's sake. Sainters...come on!
