2014 ... opened with 2 wins
Last time we opened with 2 wins was 2014. Then we lost in third round. Can we cause another upset in the West next week v Freo? My heart says 'yes' - but head 'no.' Let's hope and believe. Prior to 2014 that you have us winning 4 in a row in 2010.

Freo are garbage and have not played anyone yet.

Freo are garbage, but unfortunately don't need to be anything better to win over there.

I think next week will be a good test to see exactly where we’re at.

Unkind punters might say the same thing about a team that struggled to beat the universal wooden spoon favourites and couldn't put away a team so badly out of form that some of their fans booed them off the ground!

You can only beat what is put in front of you and so far we are 2-0.
Screw Freo.

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
I was really impressed to see we went with a young midfield to start the last. Especially as Essendon had the momentum.
Marshall, Steele, Gresham and Acres.
I loved it.
Richo wouldn’t have had the balls to do that last year. Maybe Ratten?

Gold Coast won their first two last year, then went out west to play Freo for round three., lost, won another, then booked their tickets to the salt mines.
We won't let that happen. Somehow.
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Optus Stadium is the same size as the MCG.
The Royal Prince Sir Jade Gresh is the master of the MCG.
He is our new Dal Santo - sublime skills!
He will tear it apart in Perth. Acres & Parkee will be on home soil as well.
The spirit and mongrel is back.
We are a team to feared.

And we won the last two games of 2013 too. We actually won 4 games in a row.

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
Great to have won the first 2. Especially against essendon who we always struggle against, regardless of ladder position and personnel. IE 09 Saints top ladder essendon bottom. They almost got us first game and did the 2nd.
Worried about the fremantle game. 1st game outside of vic for the year, against what is probably the most imposing forward line in afl should it click.
We need to be strong in the midfield this week and clean up delivery. Think we can win but should we not we need to at least go down in a close game, especially with the games coming up that follow this.

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
The positive is that we have the injury list we have - including not only established players but rising potential including high Draft Picks- hence adding the players we added pre-season
We are getting time into Steven and Acres after interrupted pre-seasons
We are getting time into those just starting out on their AFL careers
And we have first rate talent such as Clark in reserve
Those who I consider as the first wave of the rebuild, from the Draft that gave us Billings, Dunstan and Acres are now passing 80 games of experience, with the next batches following
It was always going to take time
And one swallow a spring does not make - so there will be stumbles
It is the recovery that is the barometer

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
lol...history never repeats......I tell myself., before we go to Perth....there's a light shining in the dark....
We beat lowly Melbourne (Rnd One) and still incubating GWS (Rnd two), thanks to Riewolt in the third quarter.
Round Three...wait for it...Perth. Respectable loss, then the wheels fell off the following week to Adelaide. Lost by 86!

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
If someone had told me, three weeks ago that we would be 2-zip after two rounds, given the injuries to Carlisle, Roberton and Hannebury, I would have been quizzical. The facts are that yes, we hardly covered ourselves in glory against the Suns, and almost gave the Bombers a way in yesterday....... BUT the manner in which the side have dug in and scrapped for the points, gives me, for one, reason to be cheerful (Ian Dury RIP)

I'm stoked.
And 2014 was another universe. The only relevant thing to remember from those hidings is never tell the world you will win a flag by a 2018 or some definite and ridiculously optimistic date. We were getting belted by Gold Coast and Carlton then too. Gee.
Let's see how Freo goes today.
Ian Dury would have been a St Kilda fan. No doubt. He would have lived in St Kilda. Maybe coached St Kilda! lol

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
Too right. Big test for us. We seem to be over the yips we had when playing anyone interstate.
On the basis of four games, two in the JLT and the two rounds of AFL we've shown improvement on 2018.
Bringing in a couple of mature aged recruits has given Gresham and Billings the freedom to move into the midfield where they can really hurt our opponents.
If we can maintain the momentum we might be....yes... might be.... on to something good.

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
Its always interesting/amusing to look back on previous seasons. A harmless bit of fun. We are, however, at the start of season 2019. It will undoubtedly be a crucial season for the club, given our immediate past history. based on the attitude shown by the players thus far, I see grounds for cautious optimism...particularly if we get several big names back on deck.

I predicted we would be 3 and 3 at round 6, I'm thinking we could be 4, maybe 5 and 1 or 2.
We have a much better list than the haters give credit and the coach is developing it nicely.
How will we fit Paddy, DH and Jake into this gutsy bunch of players.

Re: 2014 ... opened with 2 wins
Yes, but the big difference is they didn't have a home ground to play at until Round 13 or something - they were playing interstate/overseas almost every week, or in Far North Queensland in joints like Cairns. Massive task. Massively disadvantaged.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sun 31 Mar 2019 2:02amGold Coast won their first two last year, then went out west to play Freo for round three., lost, won another, then booked their tickets to the salt mines.

We don't have that level of difficulty. WA next week - big trip, then back at Etihad for a home game against the Hawks who we go alright against without necessarily winning, then the Dees at the G, which historically we win often. Then West Coast at Etihad again.
Can't compare the two really. I think also, despite the external noise, that the team and club are basically a happy one. Happy to be back at Moorabbin, the players like AR despite external noise, new assistants are popular, new professionalism at the coalface with Darren O'Shaughnessy (who is a Saints man by the way) brought in from the Hawks.
We'll win our 9 games this year, and (hopefully) be a lot more competitive in the ones we lose, and with the injuries we've copped that is a good outcome.
