Who remembers some St Kilda upset wins?
....cause I need to get a jolt of hope..
I wanna hear about unlikely wins we had. If they are in the darkest days of a bleak winter, when we were away and traveling poorly, against a side up and about - more the better!

1976 Princes Park , where we never won, against Hawks who went on to win the flag. Oft mentioned on this forum. The huge comeback after Paul Callery got ko’d By Cat Colling’s knee
Round 4 1986 against Fitzroy, I think. We had lost our first 3 games by over 100 points. In round 2 Carlton beat us 25 goals to 2- Gilbert McAdam kicked both our goals.
We were truly diabolical. I expect the Roys were rubbish too, but I can assure you that win was a huge relief and surprise for everyone.

In the 80s we’d always seem to cause an upset win on Saint Pav day. A win at Kardinia Park comes to mind.

Round 9 1995. We obliberated the eventual premiers (Carlton) at Waverley Park.
A highly unlikely thrashing at the time.

And the Carlton team we beat is rightly rated one of the best teams of all time; one of the great seasons of all time - until the Saints got 'em!leighsaintsince66 wrote: ↑Sat 06 Jul 2019 11:11am Round 9 1995. We obliberated the eventual premiers (Carlton) at Waverley Park.

Re: Who remembers some St Kilda upset wins?
I took a peak at that game in the context of their season and Parkin says the loss to St Kilda had a profound effect...

...i don’t wonder we can’t get that ‘bounce nack’ effect they got, as they went in to the match at 8-1, and that one had been a clobbering from Sydney the previous week.
Among the usual suspects, Keogh and Devonport among the best, and -talk about a forgotten player- Glen Coghlan, (the other Coghlan) ...Great game.

Re: Who remembers some St Kilda upset wins?
Yes that was truly unbelievable . They kicked only a few goals , I think. The following year we beat them in the preseason GF , which meant a heck of a lot at the time. Huge game, Saturday night at Waverley.leighsaintsince66 wrote: ↑Sat 06 Jul 2019 11:11am Round 9 1995. We obliberated the eventual premiers (Carlton) at Waverley Park.

Re: Who remembers some St Kilda upset wins?
It must have been about 1976 when we took on a very talent laden North Melbourne at Moorabbin, which included Malcolm Blight and dual Brownlow medalist Keith Grieg. We pulled of an upset win and I remember Robbie Muir giving Keith Greig a Football lesson that day.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

I had a check of wiki (this is how I face my responsibilities in this short life) and I think it’s 1985 mate! 1986 wasn’t much better - it took us until Round 13 to post a win, against Melbourne by 51. Carlton gave us a shellacking early season both years. Just 88 points in ‘86. Exactly the time we were buying their cast-offs!

Re: Who remembers some St Kilda upset wins?
North got us twice in ‘76, but we played out a pretty fair season until Carlton got us late and belted us by 101. We then fell away to be 9-13 seasons end.happy feet wrote: ↑Sat 06 Jul 2019 7:03pm It must have been about 1976 when we took on a very talent laden North Melbourne at Moorabbin, which included Malcolm Blight and dual Brownlow medalist Keith Grieg. He frequently did that to many VFL "stars" of the day. In todays thankfully anti racist climate, he would have been an absolute superstar of half back with a handful of AA's to his name!happy feet wrote: ↑Sat 06 Jul 2019 7:03pm I remember Robbie Muir giving Keith Greig a Football lesson that day.

2018 - Gold Coast v St.Kilda at Metricon....
Down by 4 points.... 30 seconds to go.....
GRESH!!!!!! Goal!!!!!! 2 points up and the Saints hang on for a famous victory.
Consolidated our position in 16th on the ladder and we sang and danced for days and days.
Social media and marketing team went into meltdown, posting daily about the win.
Those were the days......

Round 13, and they had won three games - Carlton, North and one other. How bad we were to not be favorites?

Beating West Coast last round of 1999. Spanking Sydney in Sydney 1998. Beating Adelaide in Adelaide final 2005. The Carlton game in 1995 mentioned earlier was a belter, Rod Keogh on fire.
