St Kilda have indicated that the relationship between Brad Scott and Saints football chief Simon Lethlean will not be a factor as the Saints seek a replacement for coach Alan Richardson.
Scott, who mutually parted ways with North Melbourne earlier in the season after nearly a decade at the helm, had been linked with the St Kilda coaching position since leaving Arden Street, well before Richardson resigned from the Saints on Monday.
The former Kangaroos coach is a close friend of Lethlean, leading to speculation that Scott would be in the box seat to coach St Kilda in 2020.
However speaking at Moorabbin on Tuesday at the press conference formalising Richardson's departure, Saints chief executive Matt Finnis vehemently denied that Scott's relationship with Lethlean was a consideration.
“I haven’t spoken to Brad and perhaps I’ll address that, because I’m obviously aware of the reports,” Finnis said.
“The reality is this is a critical decision for our football club and any suggestions that those kinds of decisions get made on the basis of a friendship or a connection should just be absolutely disregarded.”

Brad Scott would be a DISASTER.

Well first point will be on who is on the Selection Committee.
Lethlean as a "best mate" of Scott has a clear conflict of interest and so should not be on it.
If he is, the process will be compromised before it even starts.
This is a good point and I agree 100%. If he’s on the panel, all that rubbish about due process is just PR bollocks and hopefully the media keep really hammering the club on this so we don’t end up with Scott as coach. Surely we can find enough ‘footy’ experts so as Lethlean is not needed on the panel. Geez I can’t believe we have that knob at our club! What a sleazy piece of garbage
relax people
There will be an independent committee set up to vet possible candidates and will present the best choice for the club boards' consideration.
In the meantime the club, via back channels threw budget deficit sized amounts at someone who will remain anonymous at hawthorn but came up short - so we will settle on someone else thanks
The pre-loaded hate for Scott will be a huge upside for the haters and will avoid having to wait until the honeymoon period is finished. The haters could put a solid pre season in and hit the ground running come round 1 2020.

I’m by no means a hater. I didn’t think Richo was the man for the job but you won’t find any posts here by me hating on him. However, if we appoint Scott I will be so disillusioned by the club, more so than ever. Even if we do go through the right process and he ends up with the job the stigma around his appointment will never go away. The whole thing will stink from day one.

are you insinuating the haters are the same haters that hated the newly departed hated and will just transfer the hate to the new future hated ?

Is it possible to hate this post?

Haters will hate. I hope Ratts has selection integrity, or enough money to buy those photos from Newnsy.

Of course Lethlean should be on the panel.
No problem, as long as Scott is not then a candidate. Otherwise the conflict of interest is clear. Moreso as today the club has made it clear that there will be no " Boys Club".
If Lethlean is on the panel, and if Scott is appointed then it will be impossible to deny Jobs for the Boys even if it was not the case.
Even if Scott is not appointed the process would be compromised.

If everyone that was mates with someone was ruled out - there'd be no candidates left!

Rubbish. There is a huge difference between an actual mate and just someone you know enough to talk to, and have had passing acquaintances with.
They have been described as close mates. If so that is a clear conflict of interest.
Also If Scott was appointed it would make for a somewhat awkward working relationship as well.
The role of Head Coach is a position that is always under huge pressure. You do not want to add any other layers of complications to it as it already a most difficult job.

lethlean can leave it up to people with direct footballing experience. no place sitting on the selection panel, especially with a close friend up for the job. if he has any integrity he'll step back.

The public bruhaha and acknowledgements mean there is no chance Scott will be our coach. In fact his currency anywhere in the AFL is probably rock bottom now: thanks to Rhys Shaw, the babble about a mates set up and the influencers at North going out of the way to spoil his name.
Lethlean now has one strike batting and is pitching 3 balls. He would need to lift his game and score some points with Bassett in the near future. Hannebury, the critical sour face presence in the box recently, and the strong belief in the industry that he would do a swiftie for a mate would not enhance his reputation at the club, I'd think. He needs a few wins recruit wise and footy department wise pretty smartly or he can write his own farewell speech in the next 12 months. When a coach goes he never goes alone, a few others will be packing in about a month, Danny. And a few players.
