AFL Coaches who've played for St Kilda
By my count, David Hale will become the 10th Hawthorn player to have played 100 games for the club and also coach a senior team in the AFL era (1990-), following Matthews, Ayres, Knights, Parkin, Eade, Schwab, Wallace, Buckenara & Rawlings.
Unless I'm mistaken, there's only one player who has played more than 100 games for St Kilda who went on to become a senior coach (Danny Frawley) in the AFL era. That seems a remarkably low figure.
Under that number, a couple have kicked on to the senior post: Allan Jeans (80), Grant Thomas (72), Ken Sheldon (53), Luke Beveridge (45) & Mick Malthouse (53) - there might be a few others I've missed.
But our long-serving champions have seldom-been regarded as top line coaches in the making. It may be meaningless, but I do wonder if we've had enough true leaders (rather than just great players) in our ranks over the years, and also whether that's affected our ability to compete for premierships - and create an ongoing culture of success.

Darrell Baldock.
Allan Davis, 173 games, although as only in a caretaker role for the Doc.

Not in the AFL era. As mentioned, I'm only counting after 1990, otherwise you have to go back to 1897 or 1873 (which is kind of pointless).
Also not in the AFL era.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Thu 22 Aug 2019 3:44pm Darrell Baldock.

The obvious reason for this is that clubs appointing coaches often go for someone with premiership experience, whether as a player or assistant, or head coach.

David Hale is also from the St Kilda coaching academy, having been an assistant to Ross Lyon.

If we’re completely ignoring the OP and going back pre-AFL, don’t forget big Carl.

Great post. Profound last paragraph. We were on the right path to a 'culture of success' in the GT/Butters era with innovative ideas like rotating the captaincy. GT not only helped create on field leaders but it was symbolic of the team first mentality. You had to park your ego to one side for the benefit of the teamevertonfc wrote: ↑Thu 22 Aug 2019 3:09pm By my count, David Hale will become the 10th Hawthorn player to have played 100 games for the club and also coach a senior team in the AFL era (1990-), following Matthews, Ayres, Knights, Parkin, Eade, Schwab, Wallace, Buckenara & Rawlings.

You saw it with a guy like Clarko who has changed several captains during his tenure. He started by removing Shane Crawford, and giving the role to Vandenberg, then Mitchell, then Hodge, Roughhead and now Stratton. Same with Longmire over his coaching career and also Hinkley has adopted a policy of giving new leaders an opportunity to captain.
The saddest thing about the Lyon years was that he wasn't interested in developing any future leaders and even sadder was that the concentration of money and rewards to a handful of senior players would ultimately lead to the disintegration of the core group that started together under Grant Thomas
Watters tried to initiate a changing of the guard and he challenged the playing group to try and flush out or create new leaders but there were powerful voices that resisted change and it was one of the reasons he was sacked. Richo was a 'yes man' who decided that after being in charge for five years that he couldn't assist to develop leaders so we imported them instead
