I think if Barney Gumble were president AR would have gone... he basically resigned.

As I said in another thread recently, Peter Summers can be credited with much of the positive outcomes the club is experiencing at present, same also goes for AR and yes BM he did resign to be factually correct. Both PS and AR left a very solid foundation as a legacy during their time spent at the club and certainly left the place in better shape than when they took over.
I'm pretty certain AB will build on it as we now have some really good people at the club providing some gravitas and momentum to the good work done by those who come before them.
