2020 Picks
Can someone please tell me what picks we have for 2020?
Is it just....
1x - First Round
2x - Fourth Round
So we've lost both second and third round picks?

Re: 2020 Picks
You can see all of the picks we traded in and out at:
https://www.afl.com.au/news/trade/trade-tracker
And we get later round picks to match what we are delisting.

Re: 2020 Picks
In: Dan Butler, Bradley Hill, Dougal Howard, Zak Jones, Paddy Ryder, pick No.51, 2020 round four pick (Sydney), 2020 round four pick (Port Adelaide)
Out: Blake Acres, Josh Bruce, Jack Steven, pick No.6, pick No.59, pick No.76, 2020 round two pick, 2020 round three pick, 2020 round four pick
2019 draft picks: 51, 82 plus a later pick if we use 3 picks. Wilkie should be elevated. Plus there is our NGA player Biggy.
So for 2020 we have:
round one pick (StKilda)
round four pick (Sydney),
round four pick (Port Adelaide)
So lets hope Swans and Port both crash and burn next year.

The 2020 draft is threatening to be heavily compromised as academy player picks will not be limited to NSW and QLD teams.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 1:41amIn: Dan Butler, Bradley Hill, Dougal Howard, Zak Jones, Paddy Ryder, pick No.51, 2020 round four pick (Sydney), 2020 round four pick (Port Adelaide)

All 18 teams will be able to claim academy picks.
When a club jumps in to match a pick for an academy player everyone gets bumped down one pick.
The club robbed of their first choice pick has a second go.

Yes I am fully aware and this would be in part one reason the Saints traded out as we do not have ourselves any good academy picks (our NGA zone is ridiculous compared to all other clubs).ace wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 2:03amThe 2020 draft is threatening to be heavily compromised as academy player picks will not be limited to NSW and QLD teams.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 1:41amIn: Dan Butler, Bradley Hill, Dougal Howard, Zak Jones, Paddy Ryder, pick No.51, 2020 round four pick (Sydney), 2020 round four pick (Port Adelaide)

However don't forget that 4th round picks will probably be less affected than picks in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Reason being that many of the picks will have been bid on and so the club whose academy player it is then has to use up later pick or picks to pay at a discount for the player.

Does 196cm Bigoa Nyuon (Biggy) have to go into the national draft.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 1:41amIn: Dan Butler, Bradley Hill, Dougal Howard, Zak Jones, Paddy Ryder, pick No.51, 2020 round four pick (Sydney), 2020 round four pick (Port Adelaide)

I fear he may like academy and father-son picks.
That would mean when another club calls him we need to match 80% of the draft points.
Our first pick of 51 (259 points) at present would only cover pick 47 (316 x 0.8 = 253) to pick 50.
Pick 82 has zero points so we probably can match picks 74 to 81.
But these pick numbers and points will change significantly on the night as academy and father-son players are called and matched.

St Kilda had louzy zones which helped deliver those spoons.
Richmond, Essendon and Hawthorn had highly productive zones.
Hence their success.
Once zones are established it is hard to move the boundaries.
My teens were in Bentleigh, walking distance to the ground.
If I had been a footballer I would have been zoned to Melbourne.
Melbourne have poohed on our grass a lot.
They were once aligned with Sandringham forcing St Kilda to go to Casey Fields but we seemed to have reversed that.
The big problem with zones is that new suburbs are created.
Lots of kids grow up in that zone = great
But then that generation moves further out leaving the aging parents behind and no kids coming through.
You want your zone to have new growth suburbs on the fringe of the city not inner bayside suburbs.
Our zone is centred on Moorabbin but where are the young kids.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

Re: 2020 Picks
Yes. Though I would not fear it because if we didn't then ALL other clubs would not to either and they have many more academy players than us. At least bidding means they have to pay something for good players even if at a discount.
Under the draft bidding system, all clubs have the right to bid for academy and father-son players in the draft but a club with priority over the player has the right to match the draft pick with their own draft pick or picks to achieve the points required to secure the player (all draft picks are given a points value).
On the night of the draft, when any given club’s pick comes up, they will have the right to attempt to recruit one of these players if they wish to do so by announcing a bid on them with that pick.
The club to which the player is then tied will then have the option of matching the bid for that player, or declining to do so.
NOW IF THE RULES HAVE NOT CHANGED THIS IS DONE BY:
If they match the bid, they must give up draft picks later in the order that are equal to the value of the pick at which the player has been bid on – minus a discount.
The club matching the bid’s next pick in the draft rises in the order and the player is selected at that pick. Any other picks spent in this process move down the draft order.
All the other picks in the draft shuffle around a little, and the club that made the bid is on the clock again – they are free to bid on another academy or father-son player if they wish, or select from the open draft.
If the club elects not to match the bid, then no draft picks change position. The club that made the bid drafts the player in question with the pick they used to bid.
So how do we determine what the appropriate value is for a club to match a bid? There are two things at play here – the Draft Value Index, which assigns a points value to every pick, and the discount.
The points
The Draft Value Index puts a points value on every single draft pick – starting with pick No.1, which is worth 3000 points, and ending with pick No.73, which is worth just nine points. All picks from No.74 onward are effectively considered worthless.
A matching club doesn’t need to put up the exact number of points that the bidding pick is valued at. They do receive a discount on this in order to incentivise the development of academy and father-son players.
That discount is applied at 20 per cent of the pick’s value if the bid is made inside the first 18 picks, or at a flat rate of 197 points if the bid is made anywhere outside the first round.
Biggy is not tipped to go early.
Pick 51 is 259 points. So we can match bids unless he goes first round, and he is not meant to be anywhere near that high.

Re: 2020 Picks
I read that a little differently, being that, 197 is the discount, meaning anything before round 3 will require more than 51.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Fri 18 Oct 2019 11:29amYes. As I read it - If Pick 1 is offered for a player - the 'linked club must offer 2,400 points - or Pick 3 and change - or say Pick 13 & 14 and change - the change can be by a subsequent pick slipping down the order.
If pick 16 is offered - pick 22 or some combination of 853 points needs to be offered.

Heres hoping a number of picks are used to match bids before Biggy's name is called by anyone else, advancing 51 with every pick used. Is that how it works?

Re: 2020 Picks
Sort of - If 3 picks better than 51 are combined to form one matching bid those picks are moved up the order to replace say Pick 16 - then the original pick 16 become 17 - and picks move according to the draft position taking into consideration the cancelled picks. If only one pick is used to match and it is lower than 51 then there is no change in the order - if 3 or more picks are used from below 51 then we can actually go backwards in the draft order as those picks gang up and push in line.

Re: 2020 Picks
Not overly fussed about 2020 draft.
We now have a team that can perform so we may not need to feature in next year's draft.
Backs. Carlisle Dougal potentially Roberton with battle able to swing. That's solid with maybe brown as well. Then the HBF. None superstars yet but Wilkie is a find, Webster is good with upside and coffield is getting better
Mids. No idea who plays now. Dan han Seb Ross billings. Gresh. jones now in the mix, steele, are all good, hunter Clarke better each game but can one or more lift to elite. Here is hoping. And there is bytel who could be anything.
Ruck will be both Paddy and rowma which is good but this is where we need to draft for in 2020
Forwards members and probably battle for talls with king debuting at some stage and rowma paddy floating forward. Smalls just got exciting with hill added to gresh withe support from parker long buttler Sinclair.
For me we have a list now that only needs another ruckman, possible tall forward. So the 2020 draft is not as important now.
On paper we have no excuses now, only bad luck and injury should prevent us having a good 2020

I read it that Pick 51 - at 259 points only secures us after pick 38
We are covered if he goes a bit earlier (38 as you say).
I have not ready anything t suggest that he will be sub-38.
Worse case is a minor points deficit to be carried forward, but that is not likely.

So we can match bids unless he goes first round, and he is not meant to be anywhere near that high.
I read it that Pick 51 - at 259 points only secures us after pick 38

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.
