Reasons for optimism in 2020: St Kilda - Max King

Post: # 1839981Post n1ck »

18 clubs, 18 reasons for optimism

ST KILDA - MAX KING

In a perfect world, St Kilda’s Max King remains injury-free and anchors the Saints’ forward line for years to come. Sure, that’s a lot of pressure for a teenager who’s yet to play a senior game of AFL football, but this time of the year is all about dreaming, and that’s what King’s talent has inspired in Saints’ fans.

St Kilda were treated to a glorious era of Nick Riewoldt, who’s consistency and work rate should hopefully set the template for future Saints forwards, especially for King, who the Saints took with the #4 pick in the 2018 draft, and who’s flashed his brilliance at VFL and now pre-season level.

The Saints love King’s size and versatility and have gone a step further by giving him Riewoldt's famous number 12 guernsey.

St Kilda has been very aggressive at the trade table in recent years and now has a midfield in place which should give them plenty of inside and outside play. Having a target like King up forward may well be the difference between breaking their eight-season Finals drought, and another September holiday.

King is very raw and unfortunately not the fast developing type like Roo was.

His tank is good and he attracts opponents to him which frees up Lonie Gresh and Skunk.

His stand out years will begin from 2022

Agree that in 2020 King will be useful, but he will be no where near as good this year as he will be in several years time.

In the competitions he played in before he was drafted by the Saints big forwards do no have to contend with much body work and against the Hawks you could see he was all at sea in this regard.

With games he will get better. But he also needs more strength and bulk.

I thought against the Hawks he looked much better when in space and so for the this season I hope to see him use more up the ground as say a HF rather than at FF where the FB's will monster him for a bit yet.

So after one game against men have seen enough to confidently say he will be a walk up start for round 1.

Don't know if he is yet. Wait and see is best policy at the moment.

Riewoldt was a Half Forward Flanker.

He was just So good at it amd so talented and gifted that he drew the attenation of a KPP.

Both from his own team and the opposition.

King is an entirely different player. Completely different in almost every way.

Have you seen King's junior footy? Comparing him to Riewoldt is unusual.

He played nothing like Riewoldt on Thursday.

Played nothing like him last year in the 2s either.

If anyone wants comparisons (don't know why people possess over them to be honest) he's playing more like Kosi than Roo.

well I think he has all the attributes that Roo had and I think the word you are looking for is "obsess" which I'm not, simply replying to your outlandish comment that he is totally different to Roo.

I don't see that and of course these are early days but I already see a new roo rising.

so I don't agree with you..is that ok ?

But I wasn't talking about physical attributes. I said he was a totally different player.

King’s best quality at this stage is his tank and ability to draw opposition players to him - only issue could be is if King can’t actually win the ball or assist teammates from gaining possession.

I’ve lowered my expectations for this season. He’ll be a bit player not a key.

hmm sounds like Roo :) early days and from what I've seen already my expectations remain the same, I'm confident he will improve dramatically this year.

I think you're selling Roo very, very short if you think they were his best qualities.

Be honest, how the hell can you say that Max King plays like this?

https://www.saints.com.au/video/323569/ ... 9277451001

One is a 190 ish cm half forward and the other is a 203cm straight line running KPP.

Completely different.
