Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
Watching it live I thought he'd given away a free kick.
Can you have unrealistic attempt in a ruck contest?
Or would it have been interference?
Then I thought, perhaps he was blocked and maybe could have received one.
Watching the replay I thing he infringed and was probably lucky to get away with that one.
I'm betting it would have been paid if it was in Q1.
A free to Witts at that point could have been game changing?

Watching live I thought free against. No sympathy though, the umps missed 20 frees to us.

They got the clearance. A free would have slowed them down.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 07 Aug 2020 4:36pm Watching it live I thought he'd given away a free kick.

Yes but Ellis blazed away on his left and they turned it over.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Fri 07 Aug 2020 4:41pmThey got the clearance. A free would have slowed them down.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 07 Aug 2020 4:36pm Watching it live I thought he'd given away a free kick.

Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
Watching it live I thought it was almost 'tunneling' by Witts and should have been a free to Paddy.
It was as 'technical' as the free to Ben King against Howard.
But maybe it was my natural bias?

They don't seem to pay tunnelling frees in the ruck.
It happened to Ryder many times, even at centre bounces vs Witts.

Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
Witts was trying to prevent Ryder access to the ball.
The umpires would have said Ryder was trying to go for the ball.
If anything they may have penalised Witts but Witts did go for the ball after blocking Ryder.

I thought it was genuine attempt to play the ball.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 07 Aug 2020 4:47pmYes but Ellis blazed away on his left and they turned it over.kosifantutti wrote: ↑Fri 07 Aug 2020 4:41pmThey got the clearance. Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
Live I thought "Oh no he's given away a free", then when the ump didn't pay it I thought he must have got a touch on it. I suppose it could also have been paid as blocking in the ruck, who knows, ruck contests can go any way, I think the ump just said play on because they were both infringing each other

Gold Coast cleared the ball from that contest and kicked into forward anyway so whether the fee was paid or not is somewhat irrelevantJoffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 07 Aug 2020 4:36pm Watching it live I thought he'd given away a free kick.

Should have been a free. It was a game changing moment.

Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
I think it was actually pretty impressive that the umpire didn’t ping Ryder immediately. In real time, to me at least, it looked like an absurd attempt at winning a bit out... a bit like flying waaaay too early at a market.
It looked like the umpire witnessed Witts back into Paddy as he jumped and saw some combination of an early fly/high contact/tunneling and thought best to leave it as a no points draw to both rucks

Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
It wouldn’t have made any difference. If Effwitt got a free he would have pumped the ball deep. Our backs would have killed the ball and Clark would have picked it up and weaved around 8 GC players and kicked it long to someone on the wing and we'd be away.

Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
How could Ryder have anticipated the block before launching himself? Answer = 32 year old ruckman with acres of experience and know how. That’s my belief and I am sticking to it. I am so in love with everything now, Ryder is my maligned hero. Go Ryder. Now, three days to go, bloody Geelong, another nemesis, with a massively exposed “ruck problem” with StKilda heritage. What now?
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Clear case of tunnelling, but once again St Kilda gets the raw end of the deal

Re: Paddy Ryder jump at last throw in 1.20 to go
It was odd to see such an experienced ruckman go over the top like that which made me think it was some kind of blocking / tunnelling infringement from Witts.
If that had been a centre bounce the umpire may have called it that way.
Either way, at ruck contests the umpires just spin a wheel, that time it came up "play on".

Watching live I was sure it was a free against Paddy.
Might have been influenced by the fact that he gave away three in space five minutes earlier in the game. Needs to be careful.
