The Full Game - Q1 - Q4 Impact Scores v Gold Coast

Post: # 1858298Post DownAtTheJunction »

Due to time constraints I will put the Impact scores out for each quarter as I finish.
Q1
5.5 Carlisle
5 Billings, Hind
4.5 Coffield, Gresham
4 Marshall, Hill
3.5 Membrey, Steele, Paton
3 Phillips, Jones, Clark, Butler, Howard
2.5 Kent
2 Battle, Wilkie
1.5 Sinclair
1 Ryder, King, Long

It is interesting the influence of the backs in Q1. Phillips scored surprisingly well (Q1); and Hind (who did not kick a goal for the match) was very active.
Coffield, Gresham, Hill, Billings and Long (x2) incurred minor penalties.

Ooooh have been waiting for this.

Looks about right so far.

Phillips started well, I remember thinking that he looks like he belonged

Q2
6 Hill
5 Marshall
4.5 Billings, Steele, Sinclair
4 Hind, Butler
3.5 Coffield, Gresham, Clark
3 Paton, Phillips, King
2.5 Kent, Ryder
2 Carlisle, Membrey, Battle
1.5 Jones, Howard, Wilkie, Long

Brad Hill, without a tag was a big runner in this quarter. Phillips continued to be involved. He was messy at times but he did quite a bit more than I thought.
Players to receive some penalties were - Billings, Ryder (x2) and Wilkie.

Looking good DaTJ. I like that Paton is scoring OK this week. I look forward to Steele & Butler leaving fresh air behind them in the 2nd half as well as The Hunter's (Neo) last quarter.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are these Impact Scores and what is the unit of measurement?

Apparently JB it is still very much subjective done by a die hard Sainter, frame by frame, with their own set of measurements trying to park their bias.

I don't mind them and seem to marry up with the general consensus or validate that consensus. I had a concern when Paton finished at the bottom after his game on Papley.

Key term is impact.

Scores are given on specific actions - Key disposals, Big tackles, deft touches etc

All systems have their biases and this one is less inclined to reward passive defensive efforts but that’s ok as it highlights/rewards directly influencing the play

Q3
8.5 Steele
8
7.5
7 Wilkie
6.5 Jones
6 Battle
5.5 Hind
5 Billings, Butler
4.5 Coffield
4 Hill, Kent
3.5 Marshall, Howard, Long
3 Carlisle, Clark, Membrey
2.5 Gresham, Ryder
2 Sinclair
1.5 Phillips
1 Paton, King

Highlights:
Battle's contested F50 and goal put Saints in front
Jones' strong tackling caused several turnovers
Hind kicked deep and had a number of hard runs which threatened GC forwards
Steele was in everything
Wilkie was a brick wall in defence.

Leaders to 3/4 time

16.5 Steele
16.0
15.5
15.0
14.5 Hind, Billings
14.0 Hill
13.5
13.0
12.5 Coffield, Marshall
12.0 Butler
11.5
11.0 Jones
10.5 Wilkie, Carlisle, Gresham
10.0 Battle
9.5 Clark
9.0 Kent
8.5 Membrey
8.0 Howard, Sinclair
7.5 Phillips, Paton
6.0 Long, Ryder
5.5
5.0 King

Steele continues his amazing form. So too Hind; solid performance from Billings; Hill has been consistent and we know Butler had a superb Q4.
Howard and Phillips incurred penalties
(For those thinking how long this analysis takes - approx 90 minutes/quarter)

Much appreciated. As some have noted and you readily acknowledge this is not perfect, but nothing is, and your analysis provides fabulous insights .

So 6 hours to do a full game ! That might be hard when we get a drubbing, so don’t feel obliged to do this every match if it is too hard to watch !

Q4 Scores
8.5 Butler
8.0
7.5
7.0
6.5
6.0
5.5 Steele, Marshall, Battle
5.0 Hind, Billings, Ryder
4.5 Clark
4.0 Howard
3.5 Jones, Wilkie, Carlisle, King
3.0 Coffield
2.5 Membrey
2.0 Hill, Sinclair
1.5
1.0 Gresham, Kent
0.5 Phillips, Paton
0 Long

Clearly a runaway win for Butler this Q4 but there were some other brilliant efforts. Battle showed he has the credentials of a true key forward. Hind provided plenty of electricity; Clark was evasive and solid when it mattered; Wilkie was our big rock alongside Carlisle and Howard.

Adding Up The Four Quarters

22.0 Steele
21.5
21.0
20.5 Butler
20.0
19.5 Hind, Billings
19.0
18.5
18.0 Marshall
17.5
17.0
16.5
16.0 Hill
15.5 Battle, Coffield
14.5 Jones
14.0 Clark, Wilkie, Carlisle
13.5
13.0
12.5
12.0 Howard
11.5 Gresham, Ryder
11.0 Membrey
10.5
10.0 Sinclair, Kent
9.5
9.0
8.5 King
8.0 Phillips, Paton
7.5
7.0
6.5
6.0 Long

Rating Butler's final quarter was difficult. Some might say I was too generous whilst others would say not enough. I did replay the action multiple times. I noted he ran from the defensive side of the square to get the handball from Ryder. This must have been an initial 50-70 metre sprint before he got the ball!
In the end he looked like he had something in reserve and was able to steady himself for the shot.

Would be interesting to look at impact score relative to game time.

Again less likely to reward workhorses or defensive players but an interesting measure for offensive players.

If I get a moment tomorrow I'll do it.

Yeah I saw that too, Butler actually starts 5-10m behind Weller, goes past then leaves him for dead.

I watched the replay yesterday and just cross referenced your top vote getters with the action. Hind, Hill, and Marshall surprised me with their efficiency and work rate

You were spot on with most of the others too. Brilliant work DownAt The Junction

Quick question

When a guy like Hunter balks or side steps and then sells a dummy in heavy traffic how many impact points does that action alone score,

and if he is the initial chain in a scoring opportunity would that give him a bonus impact score of any value...especially if it was an efficient disposal and not just a mung
