Nothing against said ump in particular, but I think too many umps just aren't the best. Inventing free kicks and crumbling mentally to home crowds is the worst. 29 - 14 frees today, it's the same crap every year. Last year without the crowds we nearly broke even for the season!

Firstly, the AFL creates the rules. The umps have to have eyes all over the place and are put under more and more pressure by rule changes every bloody season. They usually have to over-officiate round 1 to "educate" the players. But over twice as many frees, I doubt that was fair. They let a lot go too, for better or worse. Every week I see our ruckman have his arm pinned down or held at contests, they don't see those.

I think you might be onto something here.

She is able to pick out frees that others would let go. It causes excessive stoppages.

Sometimes good umpiring is about what you don't pay, rather than what you do.

I don't think there's anything wrong with her observations, just the decision making.

Umpiring shouldn't be instinctive, but it is in the AFL.

The umpires were good today. It's always a lot easier to umpire from 1000 kms away in front of a TV. The only issue I had, a pet hate of mine, is when a player simply fell into the back of an opponent without penalty. However, this may be due to instructions.

That’s true but she is no good. We had a similar situation in the junior comp I’m involved in. We had a female umpire that all Under 16 coaches emailed the league asking them not to appoint her to Under 16 games. To prove a point the umpires awarded her the Grand Final. The game was embarrassing and in the end she cost a team a Grand Final.
I can only imagine the amount of abuse those poor kids have to cop from the likes of you and your hero mates. :(

Yep only received four coach of the year awards. Also received an award for work with juniors.

Thank you

Q How do you distinguish an intelligent umpire from a stupid umpire.

A. A stupid umpire will call "move it ON" before calling "play ON"
An intelligent umpire recognises that with crowd noise players may not hear every word the umpire utters.
Instead the intelligent umpire will call "move It" before calling "play ON".
Players are not left wondering was that "play ON" or not.

This intelligence difference will become even more critical with players told to "STAND" waiting for the "play ON" call.
The stupid umpires could end up changing the result of games because of 50 metre penalties.

Haven’t been able to crack the new one yet? You might need to copy and paste a few more Wikipedia articles.

I’ll wait :)

I think it's ridiculous they even get a warning to "move it on". It's the AFL ffs, not little league. If they don't know the rules at the top level then accept the consequences.

I would be interested to see her stats for and against for the match but I am sure she would account for a major part of the discrepancy for and against (30-14).

Let's just hope Elani and Nick Foot never umpire together in one of our matches. We might be lucky to get a free and frees against could reach a new record.

Agree all the umpires were quite poor. 14-30 free kick count
It's all her fault though

Frees in the ruck were rubbish. Frees paid against us in the forward line for a jumper hold but not paid against them for exactly the same offense

You couldn't help but notice the free kick count as they continually paid them their way. Eleni kept plucking out dubious frees for them ONLY

I thought she was just a crap umpire but as the game wore on and the decisions kept going their way I thought there is something very fishy here

I moved to Perth in 98.
Have seen every Saints game in Perth, as well as a few other Vic clubs.
Yes, I'm biased, but there is ALWAYS that sort of difference in Perth.
It's actually been proven statistically as well.

Umps award frees based on crowd reaction.
They can't help it

I was thinking exactly the same thing during the game as Eleni's howlers mounted.

Thank god Nick Foote wasn't in Sydney too!
