New Kick in strategy needed

Post: # 1896881Post older saint »

WHO is in charge of our kick ins after a behind.
Last night was chalk and cheese. We kicked a point and Richmond grabbed the ball and got it in play as quickly as possible when the option was available , often catching us out and not havign our zone set properly .
On the other hand we get the ball to Dougal who assess the options ignores a couple and then when told to play on either takes the one which was open 10 seconds ago in the pocket which 10 sec ago also had link players open which are no longer, or kick it long - usually to the opposition ruckman and and opposition structure completely set.

We are terrible at this and something needs to change- be that the ruckman needs to work harder to seperate from his opponent , or if we have to kick long we go opposite to their ruckman. Being the kicker is not an easy job but neither is a surgeon - its what you get paid for. A the moment all we see is repeat entries.

Has been a problem since the Richo days.

But also when your play on option up the boundary is Paul Hunter vs Nankervis you're going to win that maybe one in 100 times, and Richmond are too good at ground level / outside if we fail to mark that long kick. FWIW Paddy + Marshall are both pretty good at being that option and actually clunking the grab which lets the next man downfield spread and we're off.

It’s not just that , it’s in general at one stage there was King, carlisle, p hunter standing next to each other then all going for a mark look at tigers forward line totally open hardly ever trying to out mark each other .

We have scored the least from kick ins in 2021. We were 4th in 2020.

We are also last for retaining the ball from a kick in in 2021.

What?

you mean Dougal Howard’s play on, long kick to numbers is a bit predictable??!!

Spoil Membrey forward and it’s in a precarious position

Nic Nat got a few last week from Dougal, IIRC

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

The repeated slow down-the-line tactic of last night was embarrassing.

What about having an actual game strategy?

A Blues mate messaged me saying that he was disappointed for Ratts when he got the sack at Carlton after missing finals despite making finals season before, but he also said the season they sacked him, they were a very inconsistent football team and in their poor games, they were soft and horrible at contested ball when they were off - he said refusal to tackle was a big problem under Ratts when they were playing badly

But for a few very poor skill errors we were actually matching the Tigers at the own game plan in the first quarter and a half then for some unknown reason we stopped dead moving the ball quickly

If that was a designed coach game plan then fine because it can be rectified .... but if the players for some reason just stopped running then we have a huge physical & mental issue
