Season ending losses

Post: # 1896778Post MC Gusto »

Very very difficult to recover from our % now. 73 and 84 point losses mean we are effectively a game behind any club on the same win loss ratio

Also % is a very good barometer for a clubs true performance - only North is lower than us at the moment

Any chance of playing finals is firmly out the door

Every season we start poorly are we planning on comparing to 97?! The one season we turned it on after 5 losses? Unfortunately for the saints 97 was the blip...when we start pooor we finish poor and are terribly poor in the middle

Just poor

We started slowly in 2008 too and finished top 4 and played in a preliminary final that year, but I take your point.

Reasonable call to be honest.

Losses are bad enough but the blowouts are very very concerning. It shows we have major structural issues that need to be remedied pronto.

Not impossible to turn season around and make the bottom half of the 8 but you can kiss any hopes of a flag goodbye.

Not dead yet, but on life support.

At 5-0 you’d have to say Melbourne will take our spot in the 8

last year, we were all raving over Ratts.
Winning twice in Adelaide, beating our bogey team the Swans, beating Tigers early,
then letting Pies and Geelong towel us up, as per normal, made us realise we had work to do, serious work.
This year, hmmmmm bad losses.
Blowouts.
In 2018, when we finished the year in 16th, here's our worst losses:
-Norf by 52 round 2
-Crows by 49 round 3
-Geelong by 47 round 4
-Syd by 71 round 12
-Rich by 54 round 18
-Ess by 43 round 21

The way we are going, and yes I know its early days...if Marshall keeps getting injured and Jones keeps getting injured, we'll end up the same way.

notice that our big losses have been bigger than anything in 2018, when we finished 16th.

I really think we are in for a rough ride until mid-season. But I think we are going to surprise a lot of people in after that. Mind you, not before they have burnt their hot cross buns in disgust. I see us settling down and getting to know the new reality etc.

we ended 2018 with a percentage of 75.6
our current % is 71.4

Does anyone seriously think we will do better this year, than 2018, when we won 4, and drew one

We have mostly played better quality sides so far, except for Essendon, who of course tore us a new one. In any case, we will win many more games than 2018.

The fact that we rolled over vs the Bombers is a sign (to me, anyway) that Ratts and the match committee seriously overestimated exactly what the squad is capable of.
No rucks, so just put in 2 recycled guys and expect them to give our mids a nice armchair ride.

Something didn't work at all, some of the tactics and strategy.
At qtr time, when the score was 40-21, alarm bells hadn't rung for the brains trust yet.
They probably told the guys to tighten up on some areas, fully expecting that our boys were quite capable of over-running an undermanned Bombers. Only 3 goals. No biggie.
Half time, after a 6 goal to One qtr, Ratts and co were scratching their heads wondering what the hell they had just witnessed.

Then a '4 goal to 2 goal' 3rd qtr showed that the Saints were definitely nowhere near good enough, reinforced by a last qtr where Injectors kicked 6.1 to 3.5, leaving Ratts and the other match officials despondent, and I wonder if Ratts picked up his smartphone and turned on the 'do not disturb' feature to avoid any embarrassing calls from an angry Finnis and other board members, asking how the holy hell this debacle could happen

Yes, the lack of thought re the ruck is very concerning.

The Tigers game was Ratten's biggest loss ever.

They'll solider on thinking they're stil a chance but for how long?

When do they start blooding kids for next year? Sorry, next years, plural.

The only way to erase the horrible memory of that, is to be competitive against the Cats n Swans, who we play TWICE, at Marvel and the Cattery, as well as the SCG.
In a perfect world, we would win 2 of those 4 games.

It would be a declaration that this squad is definitely on the right track and there is hope.
And surely we beat the Pies.

If we can't beat the Cats n Swans, then the team, and/or the coaches, have no idea and the year is wasted, for me.

If we lose to Norf (don't laugh, we could roll over as we did against the Injectors) then we're a rabble.

2020 was an aberration, when we travelled twice to Adelaide and won both, beat Tigers early, beat our bogey Swans. 2021 we've returned to our old ways. Damn

Toughest draw this season doesnt help when you have a down one, but if you want to be great you need to be able to deal with adversity, which we have not shown we can this season so far

We'll know if the Dees are the real deal after this round. Can only beat whoever is put in front of you, but up till now that hasn't been much.

Despite how ordinary this club has been, 2021 is only the seventh time in 124 years that we've had two losses of 75+ points in the opening five rounds.

But when that happens, it's ugly reading....

1898 - Wooden spoon, 0 wins
1903 - 5th of 8, 7 wins
1948 - Wooden spoon, 2 wins
1979 - Wooden spoon, 3 wins
1985 - Wooden spoon, 3 wins
2002 - 15th of 16, 5 wins
2021 - ???

Totally agree, we may recover to win a few games, but you can put a line through the Saints playing finals this year. With our draw this year its just not going to happen. There is something seriously amiss down at Moorabbin?

The club needs to do a thorough review as to where the lists sits, cull a lot of the dead wood and start recruiting highly rated kids again! Based on their lack of performance, Gallagher should to go to Hannebrey & Hill and attempt to renegotiate their ridiculous contracts. Gaggs & Lethlean had good intentions bringing them to the club but both have been epic failures. Particularly when you factor in our inability to add Treloar to our list, because of salary cap pressures.

We lost our first three in 1985 by 100+. It's the worst start to a season by any team in AFL/VFL history.

Round 1 - Lost to Sydney by 110.
Round 2 - Lost to Carlton by 140.
Round 3 - Lost to Richmond by 113.

We lost to North by 39 points in Round 4 and our percentage actually went up.

Yeah, I remember Greg, Gilbert's brother. Only played ten games. Good footballer but injuries f***ed him. Knee from memory.
