Haydn McLean

Post: # 1900005Post saint6709 »

There are plenty of posts flying round at the moment re our recruiting/drafting obviously headlined by McCartin

But I couldn't figure out at the time and certainly still can't work out why we didn't take Haydn McLean for nothing as a pre season selection - he was a young big guy starring at Sandy, training with us - I dont get it

We now dont have a back up for Paddy Ryder are arguably short a tall forward , dont have a CHB of any note - who was in charge of that decision ?

Our two picks just before McLean were Marsh and Rowe.

Both talls, but Rowe being the one if you want to compare to McLean as Rowe was passed it with no upside, and was lacking condition when we drafted him.

Having said that McLean has up until this last game been on the quiet side at the Swans.

Sydney knows how to develop it's recruits whereas The Saints don't have much of a track record in player development

Why is that ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Do they though? Think it’s a myth along with bloods culture.

I'm pretty sure Sandy watchers will say the kid was a good player - I think this is an issue of poor recruitment rather than player development

Yes, the more our recruiters try to look clever, the stupider they look.

He was ok at Sandy

No star, he was an undersized ruckman/forward and was handy in both roles.

If you go back to the reports - they list 11 games he played in in 2018

Was named sandy's best 3 times, 3rd best once, 4th best once, 6th best once - thats 6 out of 11 he was named in the top 6 - he was named in 4 out of the last 5 games with 2 Bests out of that 4 (including best in the last game) so on that form he was getting better - thats pretty good 'OK' in my books

So he kicked 14 goals in 16 games in his final TAC Cup year (2017) and didn't get drafted

Then in 2018 he played for Sandy in the VFL plying his trade as a 197cm small ruckman/forward and kicked 9 goals in 13 games in the VFL - again he nominated for the draft and didn't get selected ...... by any team!!

In that 2018 draft we selected big Max .... a big forward

Also the year before (2017) we had just drafted a 201cm ruckman/forward named Marshall.

So I think we have done ok!!

Funny enough they say McLean as selected in a supplementary draft by the Swans to replace Jack Maibaum - who was a backman.

The Devil makes work for idle hands!!!
