Has Dan's recruitment cost the Saints their premiership window

Post: # 1904297Post saynta »

https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ ... 39b32d0bec

"The most frustrating thing about Dan Hannebery’s brief glimpses of action in a St Kilda jumper is he is exactly the midfielder they needed him to be.

As St Kilda begins its latest round of navel-gazing about why it continues to excel at mediocrity, Hannebery remains in injury purgatory.

His latest calf complaint has him in a familiar position – 2-3 weeks away and making progress but aware the latest setback is likely only around the corner.

Hannebery has played just 13 of a possible 50 games at St Kilda, and yet his best football has been excellent.

Dan Hannebery has been an important player in his rare appearances at the Saints.

In his five games in 2019 he averaged 25 possessions, 5.2 clearances, 4.2 tackles and the kind of 23-touch, two-goal games against Fremantle that showed why he was a star at Sydney.

So you can rip St Kilda all you want about the decision to sign him up on a four-season deal – with a fifth-year trigger – but you can understand why they took a calculated risk."

Says it all really.

I just wonder if most punters knew his body was shot at Sydney, WHY did the club believe otherwise? I think the answer to that question is like the Freeman story, our medical staff thought they new better than another club and took the risk. Once again that risk has turned out to be not sucessful.

They are very slow learners at Moorabbin as history repeats itself in trading and recruiting decade after decade.

They are GAMBLERS.

They like the long-odds punt.

They thrill at the propsect of big-reward-for-small-outlay.

The smokey no one else has noticed.

And occasionally they bet the house on the "sure thing".

GAMBLERS should not be in charge of our recruiting.

1)he drives training standards
2)Cap space had to be used
3) aFL's cash anyway
Now this crap.
Hasn't this clown (and those that recruited him) done enough damage already?
I'm sick of hearing his name and as for that other gimp Freeman....

Can he not be persuaded to retire and given a 2 year coaching gig at $300k ? gets him off the books and frees up a spot and he still more or less earns his coin - just takes a bit longer

Trouble is that contract would be included in the clubs 'soft cap' which would already be stretched.

I don’t think any of his 13 games for us have been better than ‘good’. I think many just get so excited he’s on the park at all that they blow everything he does out of proportion.

All these players look good while they can still remember what they used to do for their old club. Hannebery has had to few outings for us, how he played for the Swans is probably still fresh in his mind.

Dan will probably play the last couple of games of 2021 and then tell the club he's right to go for 2022.

Hope he doesn't tell the club he's spending Xmas at his sister's place.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

A mate up in Sydney who is a mad Swans follower and close to many in that club, rang me up and had a good belly laugh when he heard we got Hanners.. "man his best is long gone and they can't fix him up...good luck ha ha ha"

Yep, seems EVERYONE knew he was cooked except a handful of blokes down at our club.

Robbo not retiring at the end of ‘20
is probably a bigger target to point at

Only difference being Roberton gave us quite a few good games and was spoken of as leader material!

Hannebery on the other hand second only to Lovett as trading c**k-up of the century!

I actually continue to regard it as a risk worth taking.
a/ in our position at the time, we had to pay overs for a credentialed player - and he is a highly credentialed player
b/ jury remains out. He may end up playing 30 more games for us over this year and next
c/ you can expect he will have had all these injury concerns or you can be hopeful and confident he won't
d/ had he not been injured so much we'd have called it genius

Would i accept his retirement and a financial settlement to end it all right now? Absolutely. But I remain optimistic. Fit, he walks into our B22.
