Clav has been in the system a lot longer than Tom pretty hard to say one is better than the other at this stage IMO

Tom is older than Clavarino and has played NEAFL and SANFL for 5 years.
Tom is only 192 and mid size
Clavarino is 196 and KP

No point bringing him in for 1 game then just dropping him again. Hopefully he gets a few in a row to show what he’s got.

Re: Claverino to debut
Low impact on game, but I thought he looked pretty good.
Moved well, did a great tackle, took one or two very good intercept marks, handballed Ok, kicked very well.
Made me think he might be better than we thought.

Thought he was ok without doing anything special. I few times he was suprise by the pace of the game, but held his own overall. Decent first game and worth seeing how he goes against a better opposition.

Re: Claverino to debut
Pleasing to see him play.
He was OK. That tackle was a beauty. The intercept Mark very nice. A lovely long kick near the end.
All moments rather than a consistent display. He has some ability and I’d like to see us give him the next two weeks.
He’s clearly playing for his career, but we equally have to give him an opportunity.

Agree. North have a few good forwards and he held his own. Thought it was a promising debut.

Re: Claverino to debut
He was just serviceable but we need to keep playing him - he's been on the list now for 3-4 years and if he doesn't cut it now, then we need to cut him at year's end. That sounds brutal but small list sizes, you can't carry blokes that don't look like making it. Joyce is in the same boat.bangaulegend wrote: ↑Sat 29 May 2021 9:52pm First game I will cut him some slack wasn't great IMO but I'm happy to keep playing him to give him a chance to see if he has what it takes . Re: Claverino to debut
I think he's a keeper and will get better with more exposure and experience. Will know what is required to do this pre season after experiencing the pace and size of the AFL.
Let's face it, Carlisle and Frawley are both likely to be cut / retired at season's end. Unless we have some other ready made players wanting to come to us or snag a gem in the draft or pre season. We need Clav & Joyce to develop, not for backup but to demand a spot.

Re: Claverino to debut
I thought he looked very unfit and slow for AFL level. I'd give him a few more games but I can see why he hadn't played until yesterday.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Needs to play at least 4 consecutive games. If he has an average game, keep playing him.
That was a lovely intercept mark.

Re: Claverino to debut
Physical strength seems an issue if he's required to play on key forwards. Pace of the game caught him out a couple of times, too. Hard to make a proper assessment from one game. Ryan Byrnes has an awful debut, but now looks like he's okay. Have to hope that Clavarino can make the transition because we need another tall defender

Re: Claverino to debut
I thought he showed promise. And he won’t show anything else unless he gets games at AFL level. I’ll give him a B on debut. Would have been B+ but he gave away a couple.
Always loyal

I wonder if Tom Highmore will be so lucky.
Compare his game to Clav.
Highmore
11 possessions, 8 marks, 56 AFL fantasy points
...and likely to be dropped?
Clav
8 possessions, 4 marks, 24 points
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

OK..take your word for it.
I note this incredible discrepancy.
Clav got 105 minutes
Joyce 100+ averaged across his three games.
Highmore?
5 games, average 57 mins game time.
In other words, he selected twice as often just to play half a game.
Interesting.
..wait edit...could it be he was sub..?

Re: Claverino to debut
Clavarino still has the gangly body of a teenager, he didnt look comfortable with the speed of the game and was often caught 'in no mans land'. He lacks core strength and will get exposed against better forwards, but I am happy for him to get a block of games to see how he goes.
Highmore thinks AFL footy is a walkathon, he hardly gets out of a trot he is that slow. Again he needs a significant preseason to get to AFL level fitness and get some dynamic running to his game. Not once has he taken the game on with his run or by foot, our defence goes into slowmo when he has the ball with his slow proppy 20 metre kicks.

Re: Claverino to debut
He ran the most KMs for the whole team! In his first match!!
Say what??? He's already one of the cleanest players on our list!
I'm all for justified criticism, but this stuff is nuts
Gehrig emerged from scans yesterday saying he was "as sweet as a bun"

Re: Claverino to debut
He was injured for the greater part of one year and only got to play in a couple of scratch matches last year.silverhalo wrote: ↑Sun 30 May 2021 10:55amHe was just serviceable but we need to keep playing him - he's been on the list now for 3-4 years and if he doesn't cut it now, then we need to cut him at year's end. He is only on the rookie last at the moment..first year..and the club shouldn't be in the hurry to "cut" him, at seasons end.
6' 5.2 Key backs don't grow on trees and sometimes take a couple of years to develop.
If we lose a couple more I would give Bytel, Oscar and Leo a block of games and see how they go. Joyce too.
