Field kicking

Post: # 1907684Post WellardSaint »

Watching Hawks vs Swans.

Both teams are really good with their field kicking, being able to hit a target pretty much most of the time.
And their targets are in space.

We can't do it nearly as well. Horrible skills, we have.

We butcher the ball. Dunstan is the main offender

TONIGHT the Hawks are picking out team-mates with laser precision, guys who are in the clear.

WE HARDLY EVER DO THAT

The Dunstan hate is bordering on ridiculous.

Has a career DE of about 70%, which is more than acceptable.

It’s a bit under Steele and Jones, the same as Ross and Billings, better than Crouch and Gresh.

Hawthorn is rebuilding, i doubt they are using St Kilda as a role model.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Disposal Efficiency is simply a ball that goes to a 50/50 or better for the team.
It's a rubbish stat. Meaningless without context.

What about the target? Did the kick go to someone who was in a worse spot? There's so many variables.

Percentages and statistics are stupid.

If a bloke had his feet in the oven, and his head in the fridge, 'on average' he's feeling OK.

Spare me

Is it a rubbish stat because it doesn’t support your argument?

Going by your definition that means Crouch and Gresh get it to a 50/50 or better situation less than Dunstan. That doesn’t sound promising for them.

The stat is measured the same for every player, if Dunstan’s disposal was so much worse than the others it would reflect in that stat.

Dunstan is unfairly maligned IMO. The same as when people would say Roo was a bad kick for goal, it’s simply untrue.

Disposal efficiency is a garbage stat if it’s used as the only form of evidence. Blokes like Blake Dawson Baker had excellent disposal efficiency percentage. All three you wouldn’t say were great kicks.

Measuring Dunstan against Gresh and Crouch isn’t helping your cause

They are both s*** kicks, as is Jones

Thing is, Crouch gets it 30 times a game, and Gresh and Jones both break plays open with breakaway speed.
They have attributes they make up for deficiencies

Hehe, that's a good one.

I've said it before, there's a difference between kicking to a 50/50 and losing that contest, and under no pressure kicking a grubber straight to the opposition where we can't contest and get caught on the counter.

Dunstan has been the master of the latter for many years.

It wouldn't be so embarrassing if he could just cut that out and hit a 50/50, we're not even asking for kicks to advantage, just a damn contest! Somewhere near a teammate!! Just give your mates a chance.

Dunny has good attributes too. Dunny has a big nose. He can burrow in and sniff out the footy in congestion

He also isn't afraid to stick his head where there are lots of hands and hips and bums that can cause damage to his nose

Nah...seriously...The scars and the broken bones in his face are a testament to his ability to win contested ball.

Personally I would instruct him to gain meterage at most opportunities and only handball when there's time and he is clear. I think it's crucial to have guys who can kick well but you still need an extractor

We're not too good at one-on-one contested marking across the field either..especially the midfield.

If we can highlight their attributes that make up for their deficiencies, why aren’t we allowed to do the same for Dunstan?

His ‘inside’ work is up with the best at the club.

Stats from the last 2 weeks:

Player - clearances - tackles
Dunstan - 14 - 17
Steele - 14 - 22
Crouch - 11 - 17
Ross - 7 - 8

Career average of 8.3 Contested Possessions and 3.6 clearances hardly make him Clayton Oliver or Patrick Cripps!
