Tackles
Unbelievable discrepancy
100 odd to 50 odd
I50
26 to 6
Defensive stuff was outstanding
Unable to move the footy effectively after Q1
Crouch, Steele and Dunstan were excellent defensively
Forwards (inc Lonie with 4 i50 tackles) were good defensively

Re: Tackles
Yep. But all the defensive work is for nothing if you continue to butcher goal scoring opportunities.

Re: Tackles
Agree. Somewhat.
There are tackles when the ball is released (incorrectly applied) and then there are tackles that lead to a stoppage or turnover (the aim).
The numbers show the pressure applied but not really relevant if not exploited. We should have been 10 goals up at half time with our dominance. The skill to tackle to create stoppage or turnover needs to be coached and developed. Lol.

Re: Tackles
What is the definition of "effective"?
Stats say 102 tackles. No way did these tackles lead to 102 stoppages, frees or turnovers. That's the only definition that should matter. In any case the euphoria of the huge number of tackles in our F50 is misplaced. We move the footy so slow that the long bomb entries are nearly always into a 10 on 12 F50. Against the lower sides we should just on the probabilities be getting this many pressure acts and tackles.

Re: Tackles
The count was St Kilda 102 tackles, Adelaide 57 and yet the free kick count was 29 : 25 in favour of Adelaide.
The umpires had yet another win.
Tackles don't lead to free kicks, the lazy umpires would rather just call play on.

Re: Tackles
When you are second to ball, you tend to tackle more. If you run in numbers you might be able to avoid a stoppage and by weight of numbers, spill the ball free and take it away.
But if you are consistently second to the ball and focus on pressure, a quick release from that tackle can make you look slow and unstructured.

Re: Tackles
Was Brad Crouch second to the ball?
Was Steele??
We were beaten by 6 points not 60
We out tackled them 21 to 3 inside 50 at the stage we were 5 goals up. One could say it was one of the reason we were 5 up
Agreed
Last quarter we lost contested possession easily

Re: Tackles
So only when it mattered, after giving up a huge lead, created by tackling and pressure, because we we second to the ball or not good enough to get clear contested possessions.

Re: Tackles
IMHO Jack Steele’s tackling is not as effective this season.
Three times yesterday he applied a tackle and it was deemed as high, and the free went to the opposition. The last one on Rory Sloane resulted in a goal in the final quarter & gave Adelaide a real lift. I noticed last week Steele was pinged for a couple of high tackles, plus in other matches this year...... it’s becoming a familiar pattern. Often goals or links to goals have resulted for these high tackles.
Steele’s always been a tackling machine, he was fantastic at the rugby style tackle, where he would wrap the opponent just above the waist with both arms pinned and roll the opponent to the side. The opponent had no chance to handball & it was invariably ‘incorrect disposal’ and resultant free to Steele. Nowadays opponents seem able to get an arm free & it just becomes a ball up situation or Steele at times gets pinged with high tackles (and they are warranted high tackles).
Have coaches worked out how to nullify Steele’s previously excellent tackling style as many of his tackles nowadays seem to result in ball up situations, due to no prior opportunity?

Re: Tackles
Steele had 6 frees against, according to AFL.
He needs to dial back the tackle and just dispossess the player, knock it free.
Why?
Cos umps don't reward us enough- it's a wasted effort
And, he gets pinged for high.
Try to keep it moving and have other saints nearby to pounce.
Dial back the tackling cos the high numbers look impressive but it's a crazy stat

Re: Tackles
I feel that the AFL is heading in the direction of not rewarding tackles - because they may lead to hurties.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 14 Jun 2021 1:31am

Maybe we are the last to get the Memo

Koby Stevens got a week susp for 'aggressive tackle' on a Giant, in 2019. The ump awarded him a HTB free, but the Kremlin put it to tribunal or MRO post game.
Umps are now paying a lot of frees for 'excessive force tackle' or something.
Let's bloody get to the ball first, not 2nd, then we won't need to tackle as much

Re: Tackles
The problem is that in a recent short time period we have shaped our list to bring the ball to ground, pressure, tackle and turnover. Now that tactic is being snubbed by the AFL.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 14 Jun 2021 10:50amYa think?Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Mon 14 Jun 2021 8:30amI feel that the AFL is heading in the direction of not rewarding tackles - because they may lead to hurties.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Mon 14 Jun 2021 1:31am

Re: Tackles
Agree.
The AFL want higher scoring football. Tacklers are not rewarded and teams that throw the ball when tackles like the Dogs and Cats are not called for it. This one point was the difference between winning and losing the game against the Cats.
