Ben King
How far would you go to prize him out of GC?
They continue to fail, surely he’d prefer being home at Moorabbin
What have we got to offer?
This years FRDP
Next years FRDP
Of value (maybe)
Jack Billings, Seb Ross, Josh Battle, Nick Coffield, Ben Long, Jimmy Webster, Luke Dunstan
What combination would they accept?
What combination could we offer
It would have to be huge!!!
Of little value but will be gone, Lonie, Carlisle, Frawley, Kent, McKernan, McKenzie, Joyce.

Re: Ben King
Would be a nice have but would be too pricey.
Would GC accept the first we get for Billings and a future second?

Re: Ben King
No no no.
He’ll cost too much. We need all our first round picks for genuine mids.
If you could do something like Battle and Ross and a later pick then maybe, but GC will want multiple first round picks.

Re: Ben King
13 games 34 goals for a 21yo
He’s worth a bit, that’s why he’d cost!
But two power forwards would make us very potent
I’d do
FRDP (approx #6) + Billings + (Coffield or Battle)
for
King + 2nd Ronder (approx 22) + (Fiorini or Sexton or Ainsworth)

While we’re shopping, we might as well try and get Collins. This would free up Howard a bit.

Re: Ben King
I’d rather guns in the middle than up forward. If you can’t win the midfield battle and get quality ball inside 50 then it doesn’t matter how many Kings are in the forward line.

Re: Ben King
We need a point of difference, to make us better than other clubs
No other club would boast two giant forwards as agile as the King Twins!
Mids are around,
We already have Steele, Crouch, Gresham, Jones, Clark, Bytel, Byrnes.
We would definitely need a salary dump to pay for them
Which would mean
Billings 650k
Ross 600K
Both would need to go
Plus we have Hannebery 800k the following year to load up on another mid.

Re: Ben King
would we rather take our chances on drafting a mid or getting someone we know will be a great forward? i'd say the second option is much safer, unless there's a top mid like kelly happy to come here.

Only Steele is A grade out of that bunch, and not sure if any of the others are smashing down the door yet to join him.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 19 Jun 2021 9:13pm We need a point of difference, to make us better than other clubs

We’ve had the greatest FF of all time and a couple of the best forwards of the modern era, and no flags!
It’s a midfielders game! A great midfield can make even an ordinary forward line look good, but not the other way round.
I think Max is enough, let’s try our best to get the next Bont/Fyfe/Neale/Petracca/Dusty

Re: Ben King
It would be beneficial to the team to have a 2nd key forward, but i would prefer someone else rather than a 2nd King, especially at this stage of their development.
Right now we need quality mids, and another Key Defender.
I don't think a FRDP and a couple of near duds would satisfy Gold Coast if the club went after Bing. I think they'd want draft picks and someone like Marshall.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Ben King
Not this year while he is still contracted. Keep in his ear and groom him for a move at the end of next year. As funny as it sounds I suggested Ben would become a better player than Max at their draft time. Ben is stronger through the core and a much better kick on goal and always was. Max was an unreliable kick as an 18 yo and hasnt improved with 3 years at the club and I doubt he will improve with his current routine.
This year though we need to go to the draft and recruit a couple of elite explosive midfielders, to go with the NGA players we get access to later in the draft.

Re: Ben King
I'm doing the deal to get Bing, even if it cost 2 FRDPs.
Look what the Cats paid for Cameron, we get Max for 1 pick, Ben for two, ....3 FRDPs for 2 x 10 year forwards....I'm doing that deal.
Clear out some space by releasing Hannaberry and Billings and hopefully entice another Midfielder
If Billings goes FA and we get a FRDP for him ,, we would have something like pick 7, Pick 8 and next year's FRDP to bargain with.
We give this year's pick 8, next year's FRDP for Bing
Add Bing and best Midfielder available with pick 7
Lose Billings.
Still have reasonable mids:
Steele
Crouch
Hill
Jones
Gresham
Clark
Ross
Bytel
Byrnes

Re: Ben King
Mismanagement has got us in a hole where we don't have enough to pay for Bing unless we want to be top heavy with forwards for the next few years.
Would love him at the Saints but agree that a classy midfielder is the priority.

Re: Ben King
I think we're sadly lacking in defenders.
CHB at least.
We really miss Carlisle and have struggled without him.
Howard is prone to trust his judgement and plays way off his man, maybe he's uncomfortable being accountable.
All he does is point at other guys when his own oppo gets silver service.
We need someone to do what he refuses to do.

Re: Ben King
Isn’t Gresham, Clark and Bytel supposed to be the ‘drafted Mids’
Most players taken in the draft are Mids… they are important… but no more important than Key Forwards, Key backs, Ruckmen or HBs
The key is to have a point of difference.
Great Key forwards alone don’t win you a flag
Neither do generational mids On their own
Fyfe, Dangerfield, Buckley, Harvey, Hayes, West, Neale, Goddard, the list goes on
You could argue great teams had great forwards
Dunstan and Bretherton, Brown and Lynch, Lloyd and Lucas, Carey and Longmire, Tredrea, Hall, J.Reiwoldt and Lynch and the list goes on
What you need is something the opposition cannot cope with
Either game plan or personnel or a game plan devised to maximise personnel.
To me
Two pillars with that sort of athleticism would be a nightmare to defend at age 25

Re: Ben King
As a defender, Carlisle was looser and slower than Howard
In the end, he was no good
He had 1 ok year, but other than that he’s been ordinary
Stages over the last few years where he wasn’t even getting a game. We even dragged a bloke out of retirement to cover for him.

Re: Ben King
I say we get Ben at his cheapest which is now or when a free agent. Either way the price will be huge but two in the forward line with a game plan to suit would be beyond anything other clubs could possess

Re: Ben King
Why not chase Ben?
We can move Max to defence and use him to ruck latter as he gets established. He would be a terrific defender, a KPP teamed with Howard.
Ben and Membrey up front would be crushing it.
