Hannebury takes a pay cut
St Kilda’s Dan Hannebery is believed to have made a financial sacrifice that could help the club’s cap space given only 15 games in three seasons.

I’m led to believe the club tried to negotiate a pay out/ retirement but the couldn’t get close to terms
No doubt Hannebery will be praised for his incredible sacrifice and great character for taking a pay cut to north of $450k (though I reckon it’s quite a bit higher) for his final year after playing 30odd games in three seasons

ISkeptic,
I wonder if he was picked on merit for those last two games..but then the soup has many a varied pea swimming in it.

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
Let's hope the Hannebery gamble ends at the completion of 2022. Lethers can then put it in his ever expanding failures folder.
I wonder why Dan did it, who pricked his money for jam conscience ?

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
Going by his performances I would say he was. You might question why he came back so late in the season but there was next to nobody available. He is still a very good player.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 04 Sep 2021 12:13am ISkeptic,

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
Hypothetically speaking, say Dan was able to etch out 2 to 3 years of good football before retirement, would that change things and leave fans with a more positive view about his time at the club?

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
really we had barely any fit players. And to be honest, he was travelling a bit better than Connelly if you want to talk merit... one could argue that Connolly has shown promise and needs game time but that is not an argument based on merit.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Sat 04 Sep 2021 12:13am ISkeptic,

So, in the circumstances, I recon Hannebury was selected on merit
I also applaud his taking a pay cut.
There may be more to it.. for example, he has clearly missed his triggers for a 5th year so he wont get a 2023 contract at this stage and he would not be very attractive to other clubs at the end of 2022. So he may have taken a cut for 2022 but worked in a new trigger for a 2023 contract (presumably on relatively modest pay but more than he would have gotten if he ended 2022 without any contract.)
But regardless, he has helped out the club and done the right thing.

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
I believe that someone posted a Herald Sun article saying that the negotiated pay deal was same money for 2022 - but spread over 2022 and 2023 - so 50% cut but 200% duration.

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
If you took yearly contracts on peanuts, I guess
But the reality is that he’s played about 1/3 of 2 years on a contract that’s only seen him get more than $500k a year for it.
Even if he drops a couple $100k… still way over paid

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
Let’s be honest at the end of the season we were desperate to get 22 players on the park and Hannebery was at the bottom of that list. Not saying he didn’t play well etc but there would have been a few players in front of him if not for injuries.
If the club has any brains they would play close attention to his trigger clause which I assumed is based around games played next year. Pump games into younger players with Hannebery playing for two or three week intervals then resting due to his body. If done correctly he may give some service to the club that paid him probably 40k a game yet not burden is in 2023

There will always be two recruitment case studies taught at AFL Professionals school, coaches theory classes and Sports Administration undergrad classes:
the shot in the foot that was McCartin v Petracca and the sting of Hannebery.
We should copyright them as our IP, or is that non-IP.
More contributions to AFL lore by the Saints.
You are welcome.
Just learn from them. There are many lessons if you look closely.

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
If Hannebery manages to remain 100% fit I'm quite sure he will play a lot of games next year. Apart from his elite skills he will provide significant on-field leadership, especially around the clearances, which will make the team a lot more competitive than what it was in 2021 - and avoid the devastating losses such as the season ending one against Adelaide in round 13.

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
Is it a sign that money is tight in the industry due to several players having to take paycuts after shopping themselves around for more money but finding no takers?

Perhaps, but a bigger piece of any size pie, is still more pie.

The pie started shrinking last year, and considerably. And media reports suggest Rupert will be asking for a further reduction to the cost of the media rights although it looks like the AFL might play Rupert off against Google and Amazon and the like for the next deal so maybe that might help the AFL secure a better deal.

Seriously - with the last two years being viewed mostly via the small screen - how the heck could anyone be asking for a cost reduction - he has a locked in audience.Vortex wrote: ↑Sun 05 Sep 2021 10:33am

Re: Hannebury takes a pay cut
You'd think that would be the case however Murdoch argued the game has been de valued by COVID and successfully as he was duly given his cost reduction on progress payments.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Sun 05 Sep 2021 11:37amSeriously - with the last two years being viewed mostly via the small screen - how the heck could anyone be asking for a cost reduction - he has a locked in audience.Vortex wrote: ↑Sun 05 Sep 2021 10:33am

I hate to admit it but Murdoch is right, the quality of the game is COViD effected.

Last and this year have had record high TV ratings, don’t let any Chicken Littles get to you, they’ve been desperately trying for almost 2 years now!
