From the heraldsun.com.au

LONIE’S NERVOUS WAIT

Jack Lonie will have to wait until deep into the trade period for his future to be decided as he attempts to find a club with more opportunity next year.

Lonie is contracted but played only 11 games – and none after Round 13 – as he was pushed out of the side as a crafty small forward.

He would leave if there was a club with an identifiable need for a small forward and the Saints would be happy enough to broker a trade.

Last year the Western Bulldogs were interested in Lonie but the emergence of Cody Weightman means they are no longer keen.

There is some interest but he is one of many players who will have to wait for clubs to assess other options until they decide if he fits into their small forward needs."

I don't believe that Lonie is contracted,

I had him as only on a one year contract too.
So out of contract and a restricted free agent.
Find another club Jack.
St Kilda will appreciate a mid fourth round compensation pick.

I can't forgive him for those curly dribbling curly grubber kicks to dead man's corner in the pocket this year when we needed him to kick it cleanly and up. He kicked a brilliant goal early in the season, but then again, even Kent got lucky in that second last game (and was kind of decent for patches in the last - still not good enough by far)

So Lonie, who may have more talent than Long and Kent is probably the one walking the plank. (perhaps he can swim to Sandy beach and get a game there)

Meanwhile, Kent will be made co-captain.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

Handy forward pocket, very courageous

Just hasn’t taken his chances

Played some good footy at StK but ultimately didn’t perform often enough, even though it’s a tough position to play.

Compo or no compo, it's time to move Lonie on.

If he's contracted and no other club wants him in trade week then we'll have to play him at Sandy and he'll be depth if first choice small forwards get injured.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I actually think he’s a talented player, puts on good defensive pressure and has had a decent AFL career and Outstanding VFL career.

His missed opportunities are what’s hurt him

He’s kicked 73g 81b so his accuracy is 47% which has cost him dearly

If he’d converted at 60% it would have given him 91 goals from 87 games
Which is ok for a small forward

But he missed too many chances, and didn’t make the most of his work.

Defensive numbers are fine

Should go unless it's a choice between him and Kent for depth.

Well, I'm so above you

And it's plain to see

But I came to love you anyway

So you pulled my heart out

And I don't mind bleedin'

Any old time, you keep me waitin'

Waitin', waitin'

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

I'm a Lonie boy

I'm a Lonie boy

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Well, your mama kept you

But your daddy left you

And I should've done you just the same

But I came to love you

Am I born to bleed?

Any old time, you keep me waitin'

Waitin', waitin'

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

I'm a Lonie boy

I'm a Lonie boy

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Hey

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

I'm a Lonie boy

I'm a Lonie boy

Oh, whoa, oh

I got a love that keeps me waitin'

Gradually weeding them out. Not before time. Not too many left now. Like our approach. Jack has been around too long. Thanks for the efforts and all the match wiñning goals and tackles Jack. But time.

Yes, the only way he'll play seniors is thru others being unavailable.

He's fringe now.
Actually been fringe for a while

Snap over his shoulder from the boundary. In the wet. Right hand end on the TV. Pretty decent kick.

Next goal was Butler after a free against Cal Ward.

Lonie, I mean. Though I do agree his time has probably come. I thought an earlier poster said it best when he stated Lonie hasn't taken his opportunities.

A good player trapped in a 14 year old boys body.
Will be depth at whatever AFL club he finds himself at.
I hope he gets another contract somewhere as has brought a smile to my face from time to time.
Could earn himself some good pocket money playing in the country.

Would have been lovely if he could have made it, and he started very well. I always rated him driving down to Seaford on draft night - he definitely wanted to succeed.

But that decision-making under pressure proved his ultimate downfall - at first it was forgivable, then excruciating, and then just exhausting. He simply could not cope with the thrust of AFL; even when he had the ball and a clean look at goal, he couldn't execute the basic skill. I fear his youthful confidence ultimately gave way to fear and distrust in his own ability.

Such a shame that he didn't cut it at this level but I think we'd be doing ourselves a disservice by keeping him on, not least when he doesn't really do what we need him to do (kick goals).

What’s his body size got to do with it?

What small forwards are big?? Why do they need to be big???

You need to be skilled, smart and tough.

If you’re good enough you’re big enough?! History is littered with unreal small players!!!

Two things stand out for me about Lonie’s time at StK
1/ his 4 goal performance which net him 3 Brownlow votes
2/ standing his ground in the centre under a hospital pass and getting crunched and the spill ending up in a stk goal. Courage!

Done well to survive this long he isn’t up to it.
Not fast enough not strong enough either he lacks the physical qualities to be a long term AFL player.
Butler Higgins with Gresham pinch hitting and Long as back up there Is no room for Lonie.

He played 87 games

Kicked 73 goals

Is he a good AFL player, probably not, but a person not up to it, doesn’t get a game…let alone nearly 100!… and if they do they probably don’t average 12 touches two shots on goal per game as a forward pocket!!!

Again, he didn’t always take his chances at AFL level which has cost him.
Strange, because at VFL level he is a dead eye (in worse conditions)
I suppose what pressure and self doubt does!!!

None of us on here have played a game, let alone got Brownlow votes (not easy to do as a forward pocket!) so give him that!

Alright,

Question

Who has had the better AFL career thus far

Ben Long or Jack Lonie?
