2021
15 games, 2 goals 9 behinds
94 kicks, 49 handballs, 35 tackles

He got 15 or more possies in 3 games.
Below 10- 8 games
The Power game, he got 13 touches but only had 47% time on ground.

Last year wasn't a good year stats-wise for Benny

Firstly we have a player who is a beautiful kick of the footy and his DE is right up there when you compare his 2020 season with the 2 other known good kicks in the team in Hill and Sinclair. He is one of the options that SHOULD be used a lot more to distribute and get the ball forward rather than some of the blokes who we know are poor by foot and poor at finding a target or kicking to advantage

Ben ....along with many others played poorly in a number of games yes... but wasn't that just a reflection of what was happening with the team as a whole?

St Kilda had a terrible period through 2018 and 2019 where we fell away from the trajectory of a team looking to climb the ladder (after promising so much in 2016/2017) and rebuilding for so long under Cho

We had some shocking games and some losses where we got done in matches by 10 goals or more and the leaders (including players AND coaches) were looking for scapegoats and it was usually the young blokes that got dropped. I think our development coaches and the development pathway for young players had been shitthouse and the evidenece is there with the poor state of our VFL side throughout the Cho period

What I find laughable is that fans vent and blame 1 or 2 players when the team has 100 point losses

It's not just the stats that count when weighing up a players value to the team. It's the little things Ben does which make him the sort of player you need when it comes to close games. One of the reasons St Kilda made finals was because Ratts identified the strengths of Long and Paton and a few others and Ratts made these changes and they worked

Long ceratinly is a player that has a good feel for the game and he's always looking to keep the ball moving and to help his team mates kick goals

I've got 2 videos. One is Ben Long moments in 2019 ( he obviously had a better year all round in 2020 but can't seem to find the video). When you watch his highlight you won't hear the commentaters call Long's name for the some of the team things and instinctive things he does. I love the perfectly weighted kicks to Kent and later in the video to Membrey

Watch the second vid (in the first 10 seconds) for how he prevents his opponent from getting first use and he taps the footy on and gets it out of congestion. The result is some brilliance from Jack Steven which sparks our comeback... and we bag the WIN!!
