The Breust free kicks
The second was problematic as he collapsed his knees to bring about the in the back (from my viewing)
The first was simply a disgrace
Has to be better than this, especially after the Hawkins push on Friday
Cameron Ling called it and said that it was not a free as he ducked his head into the tackle and umpires have been instructed not to pay them
Now if the umpire can’t see that he ducked then you could argue he is also guessing that the tackle was high, (can’t have it both ways)
Either way Breust is a completely over rated player who hung onto the coat tails of the great Hawk teams and is now found out as a hack

Re: The Breust free kicks
I think Breust is quite a dangerous player who we succeeded in keeping quiet yesterday.
I thought the first free kick was there, but - as I have commented on another thread - the second was one of the worst I have ever seen: not only did Breust lead with his head, but Wilkie succeeded in tackling him without touching his head or neck. I thought that umpire was quite good otherwise, so it was a pity.
To some extent it was evened up by the holding the ball decision in front of goal where Long got the guy by the neck.

Re: The Breust free kicks
Saints had the rub of the green against hawks so I'm not complaining about the umps for this game but....
Hawkins manhandles players illegally all the time standing behind them and either throws them out of the way or pushes them in the back.
I cannot stand players diving when they are tackled and receiving a free for in the back...the player instigating back contact is the player who receives the free.
other players who attack the free kick (alah hunter Selwood etc many of them) taking the ball and ducking into players/packs should never be rewarded..it also encourages players to play this way because of the reward but it endangers head knocks.

Re: The Breust free kicks
The second one was pretty pathetic on the part of Breust. He looked like he was going for a try. For AFL umpires to not call that for what it was is disappointing, but wrong calls around high tackles and holding the ball are commonplace every week

Re: The Breust free kicks
He is one of those players who is smart enough to draw free kicks, our small forwards do it as well. Smaller players who drive their head down to draw the free, should be called play on but very rarely are. I gather thats because of the concussion push to protect the head, but its become an issue in the NRL and Rugby also.
The one that bothered me is when he was tackled and dropped the ball like a hot spud - with no call. The umpires guessing that the ball was knocked out of the hands when tackled is a rubbish interpretation IMO. If you are tackled and dont dispose of the ball properly, that should be a free in my mind. Ive heard you have to reward the player taking the ball, but the way it is adjudicated now, just creates more congestion. If they want to clean up the congestion then pay the free kicks.

You have the ball
You get tackled
You dispose of the ball
Play on
You have the ball
You get tackled
You do not dispose of the ball
Free kick

But that's the same as the out of bounds rule. An actual miss kick goes out of bounds. Free kick. Player getting tackled tries to score a try over the boundary line. 100% deliberate. Throw it in.
Knocked free in the tackle is what bothers me.

He didn't make the cut for the synchronised swimming squad so he has taken up diving.

Ben Paton's tackling technique needs to be improved or he will be milked for frees more often. Opponents will have noticed this.

Yes, he gave away 2 free kicks for the same thing (falling onto their backs).perfectionist wrote: ↑Tue 12 Apr 2022 7:16am Ben Paton's tackling technique needs to be improved or he will be milked for frees more often. Opponents will have noticed this.
