Are our coaches really dumb?

Post: # 1953277Post Saintmatt »

So, last Sat arvo … the Dawks gave them the play book I.e. sit hard & tight on Ed Langdon. He had 9 touches and the Dawks ran Melbourne close. Also, make May defend. As in actually defend a forward.

8 days later - our numpties somehow think our system would be better than Melbourne’s. Pftt.

Instead, Langdon gets high 30’s and is a perfect link man and we get handled comfortably when it counted. May has 16 touches and keeps Max to 4 possessions.

Surely I’m not missing something. We’re terribly poor in a tactical sense.

Letting Langdon run free was a horrible watch ..... he ain't that hard to man up on either as he just creeps out the side and does little 20 to 30m runs forward along the boundary ..... just sit DMac on him and take him out of the game which is a perfect role for Dmac

These are the questions that should be directed at him during his pressers

There are particular patterns that one tends to notice again and again… whether it’s coaching or players not following orders I’m not sure…

Another one is our tendency to play slow tempo football, which we seem to love trying but are utterly terrible at. We only ever look good when we’re running lines, leading, kicking to advantage and attacking/tacking on contests…

Another predictable notion… I cashed in big on a multi today backing, in part, all of the major Melbourne mids to get big numbers
Langdon, Bradshaw, Oliver and Petracca all above 30 seemed a certainty to me as my observation of trends suggests that opposition mids get lots of ball against us… we seem to love letting them move it around.

I think pressuring the ball carrier is a real weakness of ours

Absolutely bizarre gameplan. Would love Ratts to have to try justify it.

Identify Melbourne's game plan, it is not all at the contest. One in & the rest hold on the outside for the panicked disposal. We rush in. We need to learn to be disciplined and assess the situation. We get sucked in too easily.

Yes, and such moves have been happening for yonks. The solution is to make their "star" earn the kick. That is, we have a fourth up who can raise their knees to the hip or lower back of the opponent and pretend they are innocent or sorry. We are way too "nice" to teams who play "not nice". Richmond used similar tactics. Eventually the bruises take their toll.

Also, I guess you noticed that with our first three marks, the Melbourne player ran over the mark - not by much - maybe 20 cms - but it was over. This was unpenalised. It said to our players, "don't even think about playing on too quickly." It worked. There were numerous other little "intimidatory" actions by Melbourne players in the first quarter and we just lay down and accepted them.

Countless marks when the Melbourne player ran in from the side and then was allowed to protect the corridor by doing so.

The tackling in the first quarter should have resulted in two s***s from 20 out.

Langdon drop kicked it while being tackled no free.

No point in blaming umpires when some of our players got flogged. Yes our coaching is not great

As I posted several times before the game, we needed to do something to disrupt their backline, like playing Battle on May. For some reason, Ratts didn't focus on their backline as much as I would have done. He tried a game based on precision short passing and the players couldn't deliver the precision. So it all kept falling apart around about 70m out from goal.

But Melbourne are very difficult to play: they have multiple avenues to the goal. My strategy probably wouldn't have worked out any better than the one we tried.

The Hawks hard tag on Langdon worked to some extent, but you have to remember that they were playing a weaker Melbourne lineup than we were.

I thought the Hawks coaching against Melb was much more thoughtful than ours- better tactically but they were not up to it physically.

And King got played a mark in front of goal that rolled down May's back and there were a number of other occasions in which our players bumped their opponent out of the way in a manner that verged on being against the rules, but no free was awarded. Umpires get quite a few things wrong every match.

I totally agree Saintmatt.

Rattens match day performances have been very ordinary in the past 2 weeks. I don't know if he is getting bad advice, but his planning and match day coaching has been putrid.

If he continues with this rubbish, he will be looking for a new job at seasons end!

That's not me, I'm not that handsome.

That's the pic of you that was in the Warbuton Examiner when you were pictured screaming "you are blatantly cheating" at an under 11's umpire.

You're looking good though!

BTW, what do you think is so attractive about Jake Lever?
Personally I'm not a fan of the porno mustache.

Our our coaches dumb ?
Not compared to the recruiters who assessed Petracca as a d**khead so went for a type 1 diabetic undersized full forward.
Today again we got to see who were the real d**kheads.
