Our recruiting is ass backwards
We are into Amon, and the Cats/Tigers are into Hopper.
No slight on Amon, but enough said.
Lets recruit another HBF/HFF and try and turn them into an elite midfielder. Always works for us right ?
We are a club 98% full of GOP's

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
Amon is a free agent. No draft picks sacrificed. We keep our first rounder. Perhaps Hopper has indicated he doesn't want to come to us. Ever thought of that?

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
We have a plan. We’re on the hunt for small forwards and half back flankers so he fits in perfectly.
Come to St Kilda and we’ll fit you in somewhere.
Heck …if there’s half a dozen half back flankers, the more the merrier
You never know when 3 or 4 of them could get injuries all at the same time
Besides, Seb will only be out for a week and Vortex assures me that Crouch will be in the seniors until 2025

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
I have thought of all that. You miss my broad point regarding what we NEED and focus on semantics. Amon / Hopper example was one of dozens where we fail to meet the real needs of what's needed for our list to win a premiership and that's before we even talk about development of players.
Funny how it's always only the GOP HBF/HFF flankers that are available for no draft picks and want to come to St.Kilda right ?

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
According to Jason McCartney Hopper is contracted for 2023 so i'm tipping the Giants will have Hopper next year.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
What we need the most is a dangerous attacking midfielder like de Goey: preferably the man himself. (Well, TBH, preferably Petracca, but that ship sailed long ago.)
de Goey is a big risk, but that’s why he’s possibly available.
If we can get him, we take him.
We also need another quality tall defender. That’s going to be harder v
We don’t have an urgent need for Amon, but he’s a good player who, rumour has it, might want to come to us. You’ve always got to look at them.

Paying big money for someone who is a ‘big risk’ would appear to be … stupid.meher baba wrote: ↑Fri 15 Jul 2022 8:31pm What we need the most is a dangerous attacking midfielder like de Goey: preferably the man himself. (Well, TBH, preferably Petracca, but that ship sailed long ago.)

The reward is potentially massive. He’s a potential finals star turn. We’re not going to win our second premiership by playing it safe.Gershwin wrote: ↑Fri 15 Jul 2022 8:41pmPaying big money for someone who is a ‘big risk’ would appear to be … stupid.meher baba wrote: ↑Fri 15 Jul 2022 8:31pm What we need the most is a dangerous attacking midfielder like de Goey: preferably the man himself. Should be into Amon
We need an outside mid
Should also be into DeGoey
We also need a Power mid
We DONT need a Hopper - We have similar in Crouch and Steele

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
As many wise comments on here have observed, our ass backwards approach to recruiting is we do not admit mistakes and do not quickly turn over guys that do not try consistently, no matter their names, no matter their reps. Churn to get real gladiators, not pretenders, is the go, I feel.
No new contacts for Brad, Jimmy, Jack B, Butler, Higgins, Wood, Jones for a start. That will give you a war chest.

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
How about we send Gresham and Billings to Collingwood and get De Goey and Grundy, as long as they’re prepared to pay a fair chunk of Grundy’s salary which it’s sounds like they maybe willing to do.
Retire Paddy and Hannebery which would free up a fair bit of cash.
Trade Jones, Bytel, Paton and Butler for draft picks and then draft some kids that can actually kick the f****** ball.

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
How about not
Firstly
DeGoey is a free agent
Secondly
We have a gun ruckman (Marshall) who just signed for 5
Why do we need to get Grundy at 1.2M for 5 years (current contract)

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
Why wouldn’t we go after Grundy, if they’re willing to pay half his salary.
At his best he is a gun ruckman, who can also rack up possession like a midfielder

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
Why would Collingwood pay 600k for a player to play elsewhere?
They already did a salary dump when they got rid of Treloar- they are paying 350k
A ruckman is NOT what we need
We need a power midfielder
And a skilled outside mid
Maybe a back up key defender if we deem Joyce not up to it?
Hannebery as a rookie - on rookie wages - with a trigger clause

I believe Amon & DeGoey are exactly what we need because they are free agents.B.M wrote: ↑Tue 19 Jul 2022 4:44am Why would Collingwood pay 600k for a player to play elsewhere?

Hopper is an upgrade on Crouch & Ross but another inside mid paced mid, and we don’t need anymore of them.
We cannot afford to do another Hill deal and get bent over at the trade table and further put back our development.
I also think trading our talent like Billings or Gresham for picks directly or via free agency is not the answer. How has this worked out for us in the past? Dal, BJ, Stanley, Hickey, McEvoy, Bruce? All better that what we got in return.
Lastly, FFS the Hannebery experiment is done, f#ck him off and move on. Sinclair, Marshall & Wilkie (plus plenty of busts) have come from the rookie list.
Why waste a spot on a broken down has been?
He was great in 2015 but that was 7 years ago.
Might as well bring Joey & Rooey out if retirement if we want to waste list spots on former great players who are now past it.

Re: Our recruiting is ass backwards
Hijacking DB Cooper's post, agree. Parachuting Amon and De Goey into the side is a must. Need the class and Ratts is aware it's finals in 2023 or 2024 will be under a media blow torch.
