Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
we all know how this poll will go which makes you wonder about the people running the club.
You can say it's a hindsight thing but it would have been smarter and more cautious to have waited.

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
i was a yes voter
i appreciate ... at the target / congruency of decision making
this has the smell of double messaging from the coaching staff
(rattens resposibility)
the party boys or roboboys aspect i bang on about
i remember sitting with Barks at the Dome
... the pill went sideways to just forward of the wing
after the first bounce
we stopped ... what was the right thing to do again !!??
my pickup was that :
gt had succumbed to the 'we need to be defensive' mindset
and out of my mouth came ... "that will cost gt his job"
this current train wreck
reminds me of that experience

Maybe wait for Sunny to start his next thread after our next loss asking for peiple to cast votes on whether we should we delist our top 3 players and see if you can connect the dots. The Fireman wrote: ↑Tue 19 Jul 2022 12:40pmsorry I don't understand the connection ?Vortex wrote: ↑Tue 19 Jul 2022 12:38pmIronically you sook relentlessly about Sunnie Ernies post. The Fireman wrote: ↑Tue 19 Jul 2022 12:31pmnever professed to be a smart man Vortex but thanks for your input

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
There is numerous different coaching styles and techniques, however the three main styles are authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire.
As a highly successful coach of elite athletes Kevin Sheedy believes that he has always been an ‘Authoritarian’ coach. He believes that ‘the most important influence as a coach is respect and obtaining the true potential of every player‘ in order to do this he takes great pride in developing each player as an individual stating that ‘praise was always awarded when it was deserved, but criticism was always given when it was necessary.’ He knows and understands not only what it takes to be a successful coach but what it takes for his athletes to succeed, having coached over 389 winning games as well as Essendon Football Club to 4 Premierships. Sheedy takes great pride in is effective approach to coaching AFL as an Authoritarian coach.
AUTHORITARIAN: This style of coaching allows for the coach to be entirely in charge and in control, making all of the decisions. An ‘authoritarian’ coach is a coach that demands respect from the athletes at all times. When things are going well and an athlete and or the team are performing up to the coaches expected standard the coach will not hesitate to complement and acknowledge their performance, however when they are losing or making avoidable and unnecessary mistakes they will not refuse to hold back on the harsh criticism and no feelings are taken into consideration with punishments set in place. They are most beneficial as a coach for elite level athletes and adults.
DEMOCRATIC: A style of coaching that works in cooperation with the athletes, always taking into account their ideas before making a final decision. They form positive guidance for their athletes. They are not as strong minded as an ‘authoritarian coach’ but will provide athletes with constructive criticism when it is necessary and offers praise and encouragement when athletes are performing successfully. This style of coaching is successful on athletes that are inexperienced or beginners.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE: Known as a very casual style of coaching, they are often disorganised in running trainings, making very few decisions in regards to the athlete, offering them plenty of space and freedom to make their own personal decisions. They do not have a large expectation of the athlete to perform and are not very critical or complimentary towards the athletes’ performance, whether it be good or bad. Overall they are very relaxed and easy going as coaches and often it is up to the athlete in regards to whether they want to succeed or not. A coaching style that works best on outgoing personalities as well as younger children.
This last one is our coach and it's NOT WORKING.
It actually can and has worked but the tram and culture has to be perfect.
We need an AUTHORITARIAN.
The issue is most are arseh@les.
Grant was...an authoritarian AND an asshole.
Sheedy, Matthews, Clarkson, Lyon....legendary authoritarianism.
Choco is an example ...I know I know him well but it doesn't detract from his prowess and my desire to get him on board.
Sheedy says a winning team has an Authoritarian Senior with the other two styles as assistants. It's a perfect mix.
We keep making assistants like Richo...classic democratic...or Ratten...laissez-faire..into seniors and it doesn't work

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
We could've just appointed Steele, Sinclair, Membrey and Wilkes as our co-playing coaches.
Done/tried something different.... even for a year.
We always blame/scapegoat the coaches ... that's the St Kilda DNA through and through....so why not make them redundant, even if it's for one season to see what happens?

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
No I wouldn’t have signed him but it’s hindsight bias.
I was neutral/agnostic about the extension, slightly leaning on a wait and see approach.
IMO, Ratts doesn’t sound any better or worse than any other coach in his pressers.
On field has obviously been horrid since the bye.
I think the entire club needs to take a long hard look at itself and figure out what it stands for because there is a lot of messaging which the players can’t back up. It’s embarrassing.
Signing Ratten up after we had stitched up a finals berth would have been ‘best practice’ but in life and across most fields we rarely ever get best practice solutions to real world problems. This is because decision makers are typically:
Unelected
Unaccountable
Incompetent
But then again, I’m just a “cook” so what would I know.

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
We so wanted him to be a good coach. As soon as green shoots showed we presold the harvest and took out a big mortgage. Oops.
Its always thus, you badly want something so you see/hear only what supports your view.
So difficult when reality does not match up. As so often happens.
I don't really blame the Club but am disappointed there were not senior people that urged a precautionary approach, even a performance clause that 2 years was conditional on a '22 finals appearance.
See after all ,and what ever they are paid, senior managements' judgements are not much better than ours even with inside info and the benefit of recent history. You see, its other people's money.
Hope Brett can pull something out of his coaching magic hat and prove me wrong and the StK management geniuses.

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
I was one who was against signing Ratt's before the end of the season because I actually thought he was out of ideas when we were challenged . Sure the list, injuries & the draw haven't helped but I don't think Ratt's is the man to lead us to glory , nice bloke but not sure has what it takes to get us to the level required to even challenge for a flag nether lone win one . I hope he proves me wrong

David Noble tried his hand at being an Authoritarian, then had to get up and apologise to his minions, or so the media keeps telling us.
Does the old authoritarian coaching style still work with today's younger people ?

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
I was always wait until season end ..... with a preference to looking elsewhere anyway
As pointed out numerous tines a burst of 20 min football does not maketh a full 4 quarters of match domination
The powers that be fell for the ole ladder position trick rather than looking at the full picture
I guess now we wait and see whether Ratts and the playing group can turn it around

I voted yes because I believe Ratts is doing a good job with what he inherited….
……plus, I voted yes because…..
…….
There’s an option that was left out and I think it would have got Top Votes for your question Firey
Who gives a ratts tossbag!!
Op does smell a bit like a SE thread. I admire people like Teflon who are relentless with their posts and discussions looking for solutions. This thread does not

What are your thoughts for fixing our problems? Thinking about castrating someone or blaming someone or sacking someone now that the decision is done is pointless

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
Me ? I’m not sure on how to fix the problems I was simply putting a poll up to see what people thought about the signing of the coach at that point in time
it’s questioning the thought process of the people in charge more than anything
Don’t you think these questions should be asked or discussed?
You are happy with the way the club is handling things good on you

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. My opinion was locked in after 2020.
I think based on 2020 and based on output in the latter part of 2021, I would have signed him on at the start of season 2022 and given him 3 extra. Imagine how wet the twats of fans would have been with an 8-3 start?
The club in any case, had only given Ratts the two year extension.
Anyhoo….like your thread for the vote on Saints AFLW, you’re really just gauging fan thoughts aren’t you? You don’t have an opinion do you?

Yeah I think you can see my opinion in the original post
I think the club should’ve waited regardless of hindsight
But yeah I’m engaging fans thoughts. I’ve got yours that’s great

Re: Should we have Re Signed Ratt when we did ?
Just saw the other thread that prompted you to start this poll. I understand why you did it now, but once again, I believe we have a very good coach.
Ratts is not perfect, but he has the experience to know what it takes for a successful footy environment. We need to put the foundations in place and you can’t expect to sprinkle some magic dust and recruit a few ready made players and expect to become an instant premiership contender*
I am optimistic that there could be a day that this club starts getting all the cogs in place to set us up for a tilt at another flag. I am optimistic that Ratts may be able to convince some of the non-footballing types who call the shots to play the long game and not just try and take short cuts
* I reserve the right to change my mind if we can get Amon, Tarranto and DeGoey to the club in 2023
