Goddard's Back???
Folloiwing hot off the press:
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/11/04/ ... nder-lyon/
Don't mind this at all, always thought Goddard would be a very good coach in the mould of Hinkley, Scott Bros, Voss, a hard nut who gives no quarter. At the very least he will put some fire in the bellies of a few that need it...
I know there'll be some who have not forgiven him for deserting the Saints but he had good reasons - money - which most professional athletes understandably consider a priority given their comparatively short time on the top of the tree.
The 2023 coaching panel is now totally transformed and contains a very good blend of different eggss, hard, medium hard and soft.

Are these the best guys for the role or is it just jobs for mates?

Re: Goddard's Back???
It’s a good question. My first thought is that individually they’re all highly credentialed assistants.
Harvey is a seasoned assistant
Hayes has had a couple of years and is strongly recommended
Goddard is new but everyone has to start somewhere and most have always considered that he has a high football IQ.
The interesting thing here is that all come with a particular set of key characteristics: hard working, driven and serious to the point of obsession.
RL for all the criticisms too… well let’s just say his work rate is not in question.
Then you have Mission who is maybe not as important but obviously has worked well with RTB before and they get along which is a nice characteristic if he can still do the job.
So all in all… there’s a nice flavour here with one catch. I still question whether any of these guys could stand up to RL or challenge him with a better idea. It’d be nice to have a seasoned vet established on his own accord that wouldn’t necessarily see RL as a mentor.
Not saying these guys don’t have it… Harvey I’m particular really has spent a lot of time awAy from RTB. Without someone more obviously breaking on the mould… that will be the perception though
All in all

Re: Goddard's Back???
I imagine every club's coaching structure has similar goals, like striving to make the club win more games, etc.
The question is, are all the staff on the same page with how they achieve this?
Or do some have different ideas that may not fit the bigger picture?
I'm thinking of Roughy getting former retired team-mates to the club, outwardly saying they provide depth and experience, but really he's just getting them an extra income stream cos they're good mates.
This is where the firm hand of G Walsh should be the firm hand on the ship's rudder.
Hopefully he tells Simon L to keep his nose out of footy stuff and stick to CEO stuff

Re: Goddard's Back???
The coaches are all a big tick for me. The big question I have is 'does the current list have the same drive/want for success as their coaches'? I think the answer for many is 'no'. It's going to take a few years of turning the list over and recruiting a bunch of players which have the 'drive'. I think the state competitions would be best for this e.g. Hayes, Wilkie, Lambert, Milne the list goes on, all of these guys had to work their butts off.

Re: Goddard's Back???
Goddard might be a little peeved with the club falling away after Lyon left, and yes he says he's a Bomber now, but he has a soft spot for us.
He's a proud man, he's driven, and I'm certain he sees things he can improve, and he wants to help drive the change.
'Count me in' he's saying.
You know, at the end of 2023, he'll either:
a) leave- saying 'it's broken, can't be fixed' (he'd never admit he couldn't fix things)
or
b) he stays for the long haul because he's convinced the team is going upwards.
I'm being overly simple but I think having RTB+Hayes+Harves has been a huge magnet for him. And maybe he underestimates the size of the job.
We need support for Max, RoMa, Howard, and at least one big-bodied mid that can be like Cripps, Neale, Petracca.
Big ask. Can it be done?

Re: Goddard's Back???
Goddard has accepted a development coaching role under Damian Carroll and will start with the Saints in the coming weeks.
I wonder if one of his tasks will be to stand on the roof of RSEA Park and point to which way the wind is blowing.

Re: Goddard's Back???
My first memory of Goddard was in his very first practice match at Princes Park. There was a secondary bounce in the centre. Goddard was at the stoppage and looked toward the defensive 50. He then pointed at Andrew Thompson, telling him he was in the wrong position and then pointed to where Thompson should stand, which was about 15m back and slightly to the left. The stoppage occurred, a quick kick came out and it landed on Thompson's chest without him having to move.
I thought to myself then "This guy, at 18, is not afraid to give feedback to senior players", but above all, he understood the situation far better than Thompson did.
That's the kind of stuff he can bring

Fair question and it makes you wonder, but another view, it is a much better option than having laise faire condescending pricks like Lloyd and dare I say it Roughead bringing the vibe down.
Not "Simon Templar". He was here first. Please change my username to Bumstead and if possible make me one of those very large sandwiches, thanks!

Hayes, Harvey and Goddard
That's a pretty impressive trio of Saints stars.
BJ is a smart footballer and very demanding, he will get right behind the team he played 200 games for.
Corey Enright is a keeper from what I can tell.

You have painted a beautiful picture of the elephant in the room, the list is still bog average with a severe mental fragility.bakes wrote: ↑Fri 04 Nov 2022 2:33pm The coaches are all a big tick for me. Not everyone responds well to "driving standads" and so it's hilarious listening to fan boys predicting RL has some type of impressive magic wand that can turn a cane toad into supreme A grade fighting machine. The reality could be we lose many and I suspect that is why we are now officially in a rebuild confirmed by Bassett saying we need to go backwards first.

My poll came to fruition and we now have a decent coach with a good support staff. The rest will follow. Yay

I just can’t get the numbers 16, 14, 14, 13 out of my head.
The ladder position Fremantle finished in the last 4 years under Lyon. He ain’t the messiah.

Re: Goddard's Back???
What's great about all these appointments is that these guys are motivated by what's best for St Kilda, not what's best for themselves. They will be fully invested in the short and long term future of the club they love, rather than a temporary gig that looks good on their CV and keeps them in the system.
It really matters to them

If it's "A" then he should never have been selected. He should have stayed with the club he slinked off to. That was about money, nothing else!WellardSaint wrote: ↑Fri 04 Nov 2022 2:40pm Goddard might be a little peeved with the club falling away after Lyon left, and yes he says he's a Bomber now, but he has a soft spot for us.

Goodwin was a Crow.
Hardwick won a flag with the Injectors, and played for Power at the end.
That's flamin' ridiculous to suggest that only former players of a club would be invested in their club's success, and work hard to bring glory to that club.
