Training - Monday January 23rd
Observations in match sim:
* train as you play must be the adage at RSEA park..training was intense, very physical but fortunately no injuries. Mitch Owens Came off before match sim with a minor glute issue but seems ok.
* Hunter Clark very prominent in the midfield, moving very well & creative with his ball use.
* Phillipou did some lovely things, makes the right decisions & has a penetrating left boot.
* Windhager his usual busy self, snagged a couple of nice goals.
* Steele not quite himself yet, coming back from an ankle complaint
* Jones back to full strength but it will be interesting to see how he’s used.. still seems a bit hesitant with ball in hand
* Higgins, Butler & Peris all did some nice things at times
* Membrey too good for Howard, ran him all over the place
* Marshall outstanding again, both in the ruck & pinch hitting forward
* Eyre unfortunately has hard hands..gets to good spots but just doesn’t clunk his marks, shame really because he’s quick for a big guy & kicks it well
* Stocker is getting better and better..wearing #14 today!
Solid unit that kicks it very well & tough
* in one of the time trials, presumably the last one, we had a staggering 32 players record PB’S!!
* a new list manager will be appointed within the next 10 days

Wood was out there in full training, didn’t seem to be restricted.

Re: Training - Monday January 23rd
Owens will be better than Acres. Owens has an insane thirst for the contest and will exploit his enormous physical strength. Acres is a cruiser who, although a handy player, has never used his physical strength to full advantage. I'm very excited about what Owens can do for us

I love Mitch but he missed match sim due to a slight glute injury..but yes he’s a ripper.
In my humble opinion he’ll be better than Acres due to his toughness in the contest & brutal tackling ability.

Re: Training - Monday January 23rd
Great to hear Hunter Clark is doing well. I've always been a fan. He can do things that most of our other players can't. He has a bit of Scott Pendlebury about him. Those injuries would have knocked his confidence, but with those behind him and with better fitness he should now blossom.
I'll be cheering him on and I hope he has a great year

Hunter is a good footballer and an average athlete. Ability is not the issue with him, not sure he is an élite preparer.
Not sure about Pendlebury reference, not as tall, strong or left footed.
Hunter is more Farren Ray in body type and movement

Re: Training - Monday January 23rd
A great report as usual thanks heaps Mike!
It is great to hear so many players finally out on the track (32) - although thats still 13-14 on a restricted training routine.
As has been mentioned its also nice to hear Hunter Clark is finding his grove through the midfield. It will be interesting to see our midfield make up throughout the year, as finally we will have some depth in there.
Lets all pray that Marshall can stay fit and playing? If he breaks down before Campbell is ready, Max Heath is going to get a shock.
Ps Its interesting that Eyre is still training with us, when Stocker was announced I thought he was told he had missed out. Is there hope for him if he can start clunking the marks he is getting his hands too?

I hope he comes on a little quicker than Acres did. This year would be good.

If he is added think it will be as defensive back which will create selection pressure for spots.
Thought Battle was absolutely outstanding today …focus was always having 7 defenders behind the ball .
Stocker couldn’t have been more impressive today ..think he will be an asset ..kid can kick the footy .
Elite by foot …

Any new on some of the young guys
I hear Oscar Adams is training with the rucks and working with Campbell, what of heath any new how he is going.
What about Van Es he is the real deal last time I saw him at training big unit
What if Keeler is he back training!
Peris is he still training with the main group

Peris is tracking pretty well & may be a RTB project player.Saints58 wrote: ↑Mon 23 Jan 2023 5:51pm Any new on some of the young guys

Oscar has missed a fair chunk of preseason training but is back in full training now…did some nice things today but needs to put on some size plus endurance!

Van Es will likely get an opportunity at some stage this year..good size with genuine closing speed, knock on his kicking but that seems ok.
What if Keeler is he back training!
Big Keeler still not training as he recovers from a meniscus issue
Peris is he still training with the main group
He is lightening quick and a brutal tackler for such a diminutive guy.

Saint Pav
Farren Ray was a good footballer
Played 209 games
Played mostly in top 4 teams
Excellent overhead
Exactly the same height and weight as Clark
And was dual sided and had good lateral movement

Re: Training - Monday January 23rd
Peris has a long way to go
As has Adams and Allison
Keeler - will take a long while - tall kids body
Van Es - is put together - but is raw
All of those players need to show a bit at Sandy

He was ok.
His disposal wasn’t always the best.

Re: Training - Monday January 23rd
I'm not interested in how Hunter looks, I'm interested in how he plays footy. If fitness is his weakness he should improve it but not focus on it. Focus on his strengths, he creates time and space where there is none.
