Byrnes for Zebs

Post: # 2059157Post WellardSaint »

I heard that Ronny got under 5 touches at Wonthaggi.

Is he playing sore?
What's the problem?

Maybe just lost confidence- I did see him on the wing against a Hawk twice his size who was grabbing lots of marks and was wondering why they left him there (could just be that Batchelor is a sh*t coach). But in that game, all our mids/ on ballers were terrible and only put in a passable effort later in the game.

Unfortunately Byrnes is undersized for the wing and can't find enough ball to be a midfielder ... he doesn't have the composure either

Maybe he could be used as a tagger against smaller mids as he has a decent engine .... Clint Jones mode

Unfortunately for him, Wilson and Hastie have arrived at the club. Wilson is a superior runner (even though Byrnes is very good in this area) but with better foot skills and can jump and take a mark. Hastie has great awareness and evasive skills, is a very good kick and is quick. He's also 190cm tall, which gives him an advantage over Byrnes.

We know that we'll get an honest effort from Byrnes every time. It's unfortunate that he struggles to find the ball, struggles to win one on one contests and will always be beaten in the air. He can't play defense and he can't play forward. He's a one position player whose position is being taken over by others

Now that Henry is back, and Hastie and Wilson are being given game time to develop, the only way I can see Byrnes in the starting 22 is when we have a host of injuries

Gotta feel for him

Good comparison, pace but poor disposal any more like Clint and a lot of dwarfs will be very nervous

Byrnes being dropped, would've been told to work on some things.
Being put on a gorilla makes me SMH

what can he work on?
He only got 6 touches.
Was he thoroughly miserable and couldn't give a rats

Byrnes's disposal by hand and foot is not up to AFL standard, and no amount of time playing in any position in the VFL is going to fix that.

He's lucky to be playing at the Saints in 2024. Lyon is one of the few coaches of the AFL in recent decades who will tolerate players with such low skill levels if they give 100% and follow his instructions to the letter. A player like Byrnes would never get a look in with a Clarkson or a Beveridge.

Plus Mason Wood back from injury makes it harder
