Next 12 months will make/break RL's coaching career ...
Ross Lyon is about to enter the most critical 12 months of his coaching career.
He has had a year at the helm of a club, and guided them to 9th/10th spot.
Considering he took the helm of a club that had made three successive finals appearances, clearly the club has not progressed.
But it is now time for Ross to make some very important decisions:
- List/personnel
- Injury management
- Coaching staff
- Gameplan
- Pre-season regime
These will define his coaching career.
If RL makes the right calls, then the the results will speak for themselves next year and he will make a success of his career as an AFL coach.
If, however, RL does not make the correct decisons in these areas, the club will suffer.
We will not move forward and will waste a couple of seasons whilst things have to be sorted out.
Get it right over the next 12 months, and Lyon could find himself still occupied on a Saturday afternoon late in September of '08 ...
Get it wrong, and the consequences are BAD.
He is not a success or failure as a coach yet ... but will be in 12 months time.
IMHO.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

2008 depends on how well RL fills the holes in the list,if the replacements dont make an immediate impact then the improvement will have to come from within and the question then is,"Is there that much improvement available within this group" ?......
The more things change the more they stay the same

Agreed on most points.
I wrote off 2007 as a transition year, and once I saw the gameplan we tried to play I knew that our only chance was stringing some good form together at the end of the year, scraping in the finals and doing some damage.
Realistically, I'm not terribly disappointed with this season, there are promising signs from enough players, and a good change in our injury "luck" towards the second half of the season.

RL will be judged as a coach after three years. He has been brought into coach for the long term.
As time goes on, he will become accountable for his performance more and more.
At the moment, he hasn't been able to have a say on the list (we still have 2 less players on our senior list due to salary reasons), fitness staff etc.
These things take time to develop.
We are in a transition period from 2004/5, with Harvey/Hudghton to retire soon also.
As a result, we are rebuilding for a premiership in 2009 onwards...
