I spoke with a bloke at a 50th a few weekends ago on the Gold Coast, the man was an avid Richmond supporter.

I said to him, I thought the best I ever saw was Carey.

I asked him who he thought the greatest player he ever saw, his answer;

ROBERT HARVEY

I asked him why he thought that, his reply;

"To me the greatest player has to not only be the best but also the fairest, same as the rules regarding who gets the Brownlow. He wasn't a thug like some of the others, he played the game hard, but fair and was a TRUE champion, who could do anything and everything by himself, but always within the framework of the team. Simple as that"

After I pondered what he said.....I agreed.....what he said can't be argued.

"i see a vision, im looking at the TV, october 3rd 2008 newspaper on my right, Robert Harvey looking tired and weary, looks up at the TV and says " with heavy reluctance, I have decided to play on in 2009 if my team mates still want me, according to AFL rules, i've actually gone past the veterans rule and my salary cap in 09 will actually be deducted from the TPP, i will play as long as my body holds up and I can contribute to the team"

im predicting another top 10% finish in player performance in 09...

Harvs is a credit to the game and one of the all-time great players, but the greatest is a huge tag..I think he is one of the best in modern times though, and if he had played in more successful teams over the years, people would be crawling over him with praise like they do for Hird, Carey, MVoss and a few others who tasted success at the top..

Isn't it a disgrace that the AFL and their media mates don't recognise Harves as the champion he is ahead of Buckley, Hird and others.
To front up for a 21st season is remarkable and wonder if any other player has equalled or bettered 21 years.
I've spelt it all out in an earlier post, with comparisons and will not repeat it all but, Harves record and rewards far exceed that of any other player and he should be recognised accordingly, not only by Sainters (and they generally do) but the AFL and the media - lets see regular two page spreads on Harvs in the HUN instead of Buckley every second day.

"WHEN" we make finals next year.....that should give him atleast a total of 21 games.....plus a premiership and the oldest player ever to win a brownlow.....

Harves avoids publicity as we all know ......
He is so modest .and just seems to enjoy the game .

I bet he is nightmare to interview !!

Who cares if he doesnt get the publicity I am certain he dosent !!!

Agree with you 100%, and who cares that the media do not recognise him as one of the greatest, we at St Kilda that had the privilege to see him play know he is the greatest, a true champion.
