AFL National Draft

Post: # 494050Post SaintBot »

1 – CARLTON – MATTHEW KREUZER

As expected, the Blues selected gun Northern Knights ruckman Matthew Kreuzer with its priority pick in the 2007 NAB AFL National Draft. Kreuzer becomes Carlton's third No.1 draft selection in a row, following Marc Murphy (2005) and Bryce Gibbs (2006).

Round One

2 – RICHMOND – TRENT COTCHIN

No surprise the Tigers went for the best midfield option in the 2007 draft. Cotchin spent time with the club during the year and is highly regarded by coach Terry Wallace.

3 – WEST COAST – CHRIS MASTEN

Although there was early speculation the Eagles would select West Australian Cale Morton, this was as expected.

4 – MELBOURNE – CALE MORTON

Melbourne is thrilled to get a player many considered the best in the draft.

5 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – JARRAD GRANT

Absolutely no surprise.

6 – ESSENDON – DAVID MYERS

It was always going to be Myers or Palmer.

7 – FREMANTLE – RHYS PALMER

See selection No.6.

8 – BRISBANE LIONS – LACHLAN HENDERSON

Firmed strongly in the days leading up to the draft.

9 – ST KILDA – BEN MCEVOY

Saints were desperate to get a long-term ruckman

10 – ADELAIDE – PATRICK DANGERFIELD

Crows were huge wraps for the speedy midfielder.

11 – SYDNEY – PATRICK VESZPREMI

Taken slightly earlier than expected.

12 – HAWTHORN – CYRIL RIOLI

The Hawks always had their eye on Rioli and got their man.

13 – WEST COAST – BRAD EBERT

Slipped slightly but was never going to get past No.13.

14 – MELBOURNE – JACK GRIMES

Demon were always hoping Grimes would get there, and they got him.

15 – KANGAROOS – ROBBIE TARRANT

The Roos always had their eyes on him. It was a matter of here or at No.32 if still available.

16 – PORT ADELAIDE – MATTHEW LOBBE

Port always loved him.

17 – GEELONG – HARRY TAYLOR

Came right up into the mix and Geelong pounced slightly earlier than expected.

Priority

18 – RICHMOND – ALEX RANCE

Drifted. Later than expected.

Round Two

19 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – CALLAN WARD

No surprise. Had come up into top 20 calculations and the Dogs always eyed him off here.

20 – WEST COAST – TONY NOTTE

Eagles were always hoping he would get to 20.

21 – MELBOURNE – ADDAM MARIC

Another player the Demons were hoping to slip through to this pick.

22 – WEST COAST – SCOTT SELWOOD

Eagles always wanted him, but which pick would it be – 13, 20 or 22?

23 – ESSENDON – TAYTE PEARS

No surprise.

24 – FREMANTLE – CLAYTON HINKLEY

Was always difficult to place in the draft and went earlier than expected.

25 – BRISBANE LIONS – TOM COLLIER

The Lions considered him at 8 and will be rapt to get him at 25 after slipping.

26 – SYDNEY – BRETT MEREDITH

Had come into calculations and not surprisingly went around this mark.

27 – ADELAIDE – ANDY OTTEN

Swans showed interest, but Adelaide pounced after Sydney's last "live" pick.

28 – PORT ADELAIDE – MARLON MOTLOP

You could have put your house on it at this number.

29 – HAWTHORN – BRENDAN WHITECROSS

With Collier available at 25, Whitecross slipped and the Hawks will be delighted to have him here.

30 – ADELAIDE – JARRHAN JACKY

Loomed as a 25-45 selection, and the Crows landed a small, pacy forward.

31 – COLLINGWOOD – JOHN MCCARTHY

Collingwood rated him highly and they landed him with their first pick.

32 – KANGAROOS – LEVI GREENWOOD

Roos pounced before Port Adelaide did at 33.

33 – PORT ADELAIDE – MATTHEW WESTHOFF

A surprise this early. Brother of Justin.

34 – GEELONG – DAWSON SIMPSON

Had come into 20s and 30s reckoning and the Cats were always going to take a ruckman.

Round Three

35 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – SAM REID

Touted as a 30s or 40s pick. Would have come into the mix for Carlton (36) and Brisbane Lions (41).

36 – CARLTON – STEVEN BROWNE

Seen as a 20s or 30s pick.

37 – KANGAROOS – SCOTT THOMPSON

With Geelong a genuine chance to pick him at 44, the Kangaroos had to take him here.

38 – ADELAIDE – MYKE COOK

Crows always liked him. Just a matter of where he would fit in the draft.

39 – ESSENDON – DARCY DANIHER

Father-son selection.

40 – FREMANTLE – CHRISTOPHER MAYNE

Was always around this mark. Freo went local.

41 – BRISBANE LIONS – JAMES POLKINGHORNE

Loomed as a 40s to 50s pick.

42 – ST KILDA – JACK STEVEN

Saints had to take him here with Collingwood eager at 47.

43 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – EASTON WOOD

The first smokey of the draft. Comes from Camperdown.

44 – GEELONG – SCOTT SIMPSON

Cats always loved him. It was a matter of 34 or 44.

45 – HAWTHORN – STUART DEW

Hawks agonised over this pick – and the coach got his man.

46 – CARLTON – DENNIS ARMFIELD

Potential late pick. Came in earlier than thought.

47 – COLLINGWOOD – TOBIAS THOOLEN

Big ruckman. Taken with Pies last pick from the Bendigo Pioneers.

48 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – JARRAD BOUMANN

Had been linked to the Bulldogs.

49 – PORT ADELAIDE – MITCHELL FARMER

Slipped further than thought. Taken with Port's last pick.

50 – GEELONG – DAN MCKENNA

Hard to rate in the draft. Some thought as early as the 20s.

Round Four

51 – RICHMOND – DEAN PUTT

Landed a big young ruckman. Essendon table looked disappointed.

52 – BRISBANE LIONS – BRADD DALZIEL

Speculative pick.

53 – MELBOURNE – KYLE CHENEY

Always eyed him off with this pick.

54 – ESSENDON – CALE HOOKER

Missed out on Dean Putt. Speculative choice.

55 – FREMANTLE – MARK JOHNSON

Big surprise. Kangaroos were very keen with a late pick.

56 – BRISBANE LIONS – MATT AUSTIN

No shock. Was it going to be 52 or 56?

57 – ST KILDA – FRASER GEHRIG

Took their chance to grab him now, before pick 70, just in case.

58 – ADELAIDE – TONY ARMSTRONG

Pacy player from NSW via Calder Cannons

59 – SYDNEY – CRAIG BIRD

Scholarship holder brought onto main list.

60 – GEELONG – ADAM DONOHUE

Father-son.

61 – COLLINGWOOD – JAXSON BARHAM

Father-son.

62 – KANGAROOS – JOSH SMITH

Had come into calculations late this week. Big tall from WA.

63 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – GUY O'KEEFE

The Bulldogs were huge wraps for him.

Round Five

64 – RICHMOND – PASS

65 – CARLTON – PASS

66 – MELBOURNE – TOM MCNAMARA

Tall defender from SA. Seen as a late pick.

67 – WESTERN BULLDOGS – PASS

68 – ESSENDON – PASS

69 – FREMANTLE – KEPLER BRADLEY

Always set to take him here.

70 – ST KILDA – ELJAY CONNORS

Speculative pick. Seen as a late chance.

71 – ADELAIDE – AARON KITE

There was definite late interest, but it was a matter of where.

72 – KANGAROOS – BLAKE GRIMA

Not a major surprise. The Roos initially delisted him to keep their options open.

Round Six

73 – MELBOURNE – PASS

74 – FREMANTLE – PASS

75 – ADELAIDE – TAYLOR WALKER

Scholarship holder upgraded.

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

Nothing. But based on previous years responses by all 16 clubs.

"We didn't think he'd slip down to pick 9, we had him ranked top 5."

"Will play a few games early next year and push for selection in our best 22 by the end of the year."

"Athletic ruckman with a good footy brain and skills on both sides. Can play forwards and back."

"A future 200 game player"

etc.
