Great article Brat. Alves has said on more than one occasion that the loss of Vidovic that year was greater than the loss of Everitt.
He was your classic old style blood and guts ruckman. Didn't have the class of Nicholls or Ditterich, but was one mean mother on the field.
The article doesn't mean that Bones McGhie had him down at West Footscray at the start of 2003 but his body just wasn't up to it.

His value as an enforcer has already been mentioned.
As has his ability to hold down the ruck.
But he also gave Alves tremendous flexibility to push Spider forward at a time when Spider was kicking lots of goals and taking marks - making him almost impossible to match up on with his height and athleticism.
All came unstuck R22 1997 and created a chain reaction.

Yes, a chain reaction indeed. Within the space of a half of football, our chances of winning a flag dramatically plummeted. First Vidovic, then Everitt, who would not have been in the ruck if Vidovic was playing and would (most likely) have not done his collarbone in the first few minutes of the very next match - the semi-final.
As it turned out, the one team that we could not cover ruck wise after the injuries was Adelaide and they only made it to GF on an incorrect goal umpire's decision - I was right behind it, Liber's kick made it by a good metre. Mind you, we had our own share of luck in the PF with McKernan doing his shoulder in the first quarter.
But as I watched Geelong breeze through the GF last year - injury free and fully fit - I could think of what might have been in '97 and '04 and '05 and .............

Yep, spoke to the big fella at the races awhile back now and I asked him what he would have done. He said he would've dropped back into defence and helped shanas out by "colliding" with Jarman as he was running out on the lead. He also said that Ellen would not have kicked his second goal as he would have let him know that it was not on that he should get an easy goal in a grand final. Laze, said if he had of missed Jarman in the "collision" he would have just decked him there and then. Started an all-in and that would have stopped the Crows momentum anyway.LennyBoy wrote:and Shane Ellen.Oh When the Saints wrote:Wish we had a player like him now ...
Would have just knocked Jarman out at three-quarter time, and would have run through McLeod too.
Game over.
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

I knew Laz well, actually worked with him.
He was a genuine nice guy and good for a laugh.
One stinking hot day he was driving to training and
i was passenger in another car, so as Laz drove up next to us to
say g'day i popped a frosty cold can into the air and took a drink
than licked my lips and sighed a big AHHHHHH, i think
he was ready to clean me up right there and then.
Havent see then big bloke for 10yrs.
