Additions to St Kilda's Team of the Century

Post: # 526792Post Spinner »

Below is St Kilda's Team of the Century.

Which current players would be candidates by the end of their careers for an All-Star St Kilda team that included the 21st century???

St. Kilda Team of the Century
B: Kevin (Cowboy) Neale, Verdun Howell, Nathan Burke
HB: Daryl Griffiths, Neil Roberts,Trevor Barker
C: Colin Watson, Ian Stewart, Nicky Winmar
HF: Darrel Baldock (Captain), Dave McNamara, Bill Mohr
F: Ross G. Smith, Tony Lockett, Alan Morrow
Foll: Carl Ditterich, Robert Harvey, Harold Bray
Int: Stewart Loewe, Lance Oswald, Barry Lawrence, Jim A. Ross
Coach: Allan Jeans

Reiwodlt would be an obvious choice by the end of his career....And hopefully Dal Santo and Koschitzke can demand spots too.

Pretty hard to push players out though...

Thoughts?

It is too hard to me to say due to the fact that I have seen very little of St.Kilda pre 1990's but I would hope that Dal, Kosi and Riewoldt all strongly push for selection...
Who know's Rix may just force out Carl

ROBERT HARVEY A.K.A The Great Man, Banger, Harves, Ol' Man River...
384 games, 4 B&F's, 3 EJ Whitten Medals, St.Kilda Captain, 2 Time Brownlow Medalist, 8 Time All Australian, 2nd Highest Brownlow votes poller.... The greatest of ALL TIME!!

Well the only current players at the moment who even a slight chance are Rooy and Lenny. The rest have a lot of work to do.

well thats the team for the 20th century so i think we'll have to wait until 2100 to see rooey and dal etc in a team of the century.

Maybe in 4 years after another few B&F's, Riewoldt would push for selection, but no to hayes, and definitely no to Dal Santo (extremely overrated player).

I know he's not current, but I reckon Spud was stiff to miss altogether from the Team of the Century.

Roo does have the equal most B&F ever right now doesn't he? you would expect he will definitely get a gig, as for Dal being overrated, I can't think of a player in the league that uses the ball better than him...

Spud was a great fullback and clubman, but Verdun Howell won a Brownlow Medal playing the same position and finished his career as a more then handy full-forward.

By the time the list gets made in 2100 for the current team of the century, there probably won't be anyone alive who had seen our current players play.

Spud not only has to overcome Verdun Howell at full back, but also the man who took his place, Bob Murray, who was also a more than useful full back.

Quite right Mr Magic and Mr Shakey. Hard to push out either of those players. Spud was terrific, great heart, tough, wonderful leader. Both the others maybe a little ahead on class. More classical players.

Verdun was my hero, so you aren't pushing him out!

Geez we've had some great players. What's kept us going I suppose. Bottom half of our lists have been pretty poor sadly. Every era had a big star.

Roo would be the only current chance. If Kosi stays uninjured and plays at his best for the next 6 years (with a couple of flags, B&Fs and Colemens) then he would have a shot, but he still hasn't put together one outstanding year of footy.

Maybe we should start smaller...

How about a team of the decade so far (2000 - 2008)

Games played in brackets

B: S. Fisher (71) M. Hudghton (140) B. Voss (134)
HB: J. Peckett (114) M. Maguire (94) A. Jones (117)
C: A. Thompson (153) L. Hayes (151) N. Dal Santo (119)
HF: L. Montagna (73) N. Riewoldt (133) A. Hamill (98)
F: S. Milne (140) F. Gehrig (139) S. Loewe (45)
R: P. Everitt (48) R. Harvey (138) L. Ball (103)
Int: S. Baker (149), J. Koschitzke (96), B. Goddard (89), H. Black (53)

what about Bill Cubbins? Played fullback in the late 1910's and throughout the 1920's, won the B&F 3 or 4 times, earned state selection, and was renowned as a hard but fair captain. All this in a side that was mediocre to say the best for most of the years he played in.

Exactly Verdun66, that's why I think there should be Team of the 30's, 40's, 80's, etc. Stars don't miss out and it's impossible to compare 2 players many years apart.

Except his first wehen he won the Rising Star.
Coincidentaly it is the only season he has plated without injury.

Pffft, Kosi is nowhere near the team of the century.

What, is he a better player than Cowboy, McNamara, Mohr, Lockett, Ditterich or Loewe?

Not by a long shot. Not even in the same ballpark.

B: Kevin (Cowboy) Neale, Verdun Howell, Nathan Burke
HB: Daryl Griffiths, Neil Roberts,Trevor Barker
C: Colin Watson, Ian Stewart, Nicky Winmar
HF: Darrel Baldock (Captain), Dave McNamara, Bill Mohr
F: Ross G. Smith, Tony Lockett, Alan Morrow
Foll: Carl Ditterich, Robert Harvey, Harold Bray
Int: Stewart Loewe, Lance Oswald, Barry Lawrence, Jim A. Ross
Coach: Allan Jeans

I reckon the following changes are possible:

Aussie Jones (226 games, twice All-Australian) for Daryl Griffiths

Lenny Hayes (170 games, B&F, Captain, twice All-Australian) for Jim Ross

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Team of the century: 1901 to 2000.

Riewoldt Dal And Kosi started their carreer in 2001, therefore do not belong.

No doubt they will make the team of the current century one day.

Cowboy Neale was a player who played with pretty much equal success at full back and full forward. However, he wasn't as accomplished a full-back as Howell or Lockett, so he slots in the third tall backman role.

Morrow was a gun; absolute workhorse of a ruckman who could pinch-hit up forward, but he is obviously not as good as Ditterich, but deserves a spot in the starting XVIII.

alright thanks for that.
just seemed weird because i alwayts just thought they were a foward and a ruckman respectivly.

youve probably guessed by now i never saw them play
