with aaron now retired we don't really have an enforcer on the field, unlike those brisbane teams who won three flags in a row.

it's not a role that i'd like to see go to either fraser or kosi as i wouldn't want to see either reported.

any idea of who could do it in 2008?

Lenny and Bakes i think both do the job now, tough as nails, never back down, and both fly the flag

Goose could step up, so could King, and i thing Gehrig is always willing

Thuggery is still a big part of the game. Sniping, hurting, and scaring the opposition wins matches. Simple as that. Like it or not.

Norm Goss once said to me, that a premiership side needs 5 'enforcers'.

In 97, he named Keogh, Sziller, Hall - and 2 others whom I can't recall.

First, let's look at 04 -

Powell. Baker. Hamill (probably worth 2). Hayes. Goose.

What about now?

Baker. Hayes. Goose. Gardiner. King. Armitage. Gehrig. Kosi.

Kosi has some c*** in him. No doubt. He's known as a nice guy, but he knows how to hurt someone. And I don't doubt he's now worried about doing it.

Bakes. I probably don't need to elaborate on Bakes. Deadset gun and worth his weight in gold.

Hayes. Tough as nails and likes to inflict pain on people - sometimes within the rules, but has also done it outside them.

Goose. Scares people and runs in serisouly straight lines. Loves, and it good at the 'push and shove' too.

Gardiner. I saw him recently punch a friend of mine in the face at 4am because he said looked ordinary in his last game.

King. Tough man. Was a big wuss in his younger days, but he's ben around a while and now he knows where he stands physically. Doesn't mind hurting people.

Gehrig. People are scared of the Big G - but I don't know why. Never cleans anyone up - never actually knocks anyone out. All huff and puff on the field. Off the field, he'd beat the s*** out of you without thinking twice though, and I think that's carried over to the field in terms of his reputation.

And now Armitage. Already, in his second season he has shown the keenness to hurt people. I love it.
He tackles hard, drops the odd knee and gets guys behind play. So, so important. I noticed it in his first praccy match against Collingwood last year.

This guy will captain our club.


Now, for the old women and punces out there who are going to claim that hurting people is no good and we should be fair etc. etc. etc.

good post and so true. my only rider on it is if you want to clean someone up then do it "accidentally" and within the rules. there is nothing wrong with strong football and we can do without suspensions to key players

Realistically we havn't had Hamill for the past few years, and those rare occasions he played he wasn't mobile enough to play like he used to anyways. There is nothing to replace, and thats sadly the truth. We have moved on, and its not this year it's happened, its occured the past few years.

Hard and tough players at the ball in the likes of Hayes, Ball, Roo, Armo, Kosi is what represents toughness and applies a physical pressure to the opposition. No a one man band 'enforcer'.

The Lions had a few enforcers......not sure that the Premiership Teams since have them though, or at least not many.

You need a team hard at the ball though, and at the man.....and willing for a contest.

Not afraid to dish out a bump, or run throuagh a player if you can do so within the rules....or to laya tackle with vigour.

The days of The Shadow, or Lazar, intimidating players is now gone though...too many cameras.

Gotta be joking about BJ being an enforcer....courageous yes, but it took 3 years before a tackle would stick let alone any tough stuff.

Max is as tough as nails too, probably not an enforcer but hardness and unwavering courage are pretty intimidating to opponents.

Gardiner cleaned up Bock I think the other night, really hit hard and he certainly has alot of pent up mongrel....hopefully he can control it and not get reported.
