Tomahawk..how quick is he? Should Kosi play on him?

Post: # 543579Post saintsRrising »

Tom Hawkins
#26 Geelong Cats
Age: 19yr 8mth Games: 12
Born: July 27, 1988
Height: 197cm Weight: 103kg
Position: Forward

I have not really watched him play a lot.

From what I have seen he mainly seems to be a mark and kick power forward with a good leap (though a very good one who is going to get better and better). But how quick is he???? I don't really know myself.

Would Kosi be a good match up for him????

I shudder at the thought of Raph guarding him next week

I know Kosi got 3 goals last week, but it seems to me that he and Roo are getting in each others way.

For the Cats game if the Tomahawk is not that quick perhaps Kosi should go back on him?

Your thoughts.

no kosi is not accountable enuff to be a defender
we need to play a true defender on him not a makeshift one not one whos going to play loose not one who going to try and reate rebound out of the back every time we need a player who is going to stick to his man and not let him get it if that meand he gets no possesions and his opponent has no mpact then im happy !! get DEFENDERS TO BLOODY WELL DEFEND NOT RUN OFF !!!
could you imagine how many goals plugger would of kicked in his heyday against our loose rebounding defenders !

Accountable. The word of the week it seems

I think that Kosi can be accountable....but needs the right opponent if played back.

As I mentioned I have not seen muck of TH...but what I have seen is that he seems to be there for the quick kicked high ball. Kosi plays well in this regard.

If Max takes on Mooney (or will it be Sam F?) who would go on Tomahawk?

He is a big boy....and Gilbert maybea bit light and short...given his inexperience.

Max can handle Hawkins and Sam could take Mooney, or maybe Goose will come in and take one of them to free up Sam.....however, it alll comes back to midfield pressure and not being able to deliver the ball to these forwards without any pressure.
I expect us to come out hard against the Cats and hope we can sustain it for 4 qtrs and prove the media wrong who have written us off after 1 game.

no. i'd bring goose in despite no form for casey rather than shunt kosi around all over the park again.

kosi was our most effective key forward last week and is better suited in that role, imo.

move riewoldt to wing for a while if we're worried about him and kosi getting in each other's way.

might teach a few of our guys that there are other avenues to goal rather than riewoldt, including kicking one themselves

The Cats are not invincible. Someone is going to knock them off.
Just let it be us.
Easier said than done? Not if we emulate the spirit and dedication of R Harvey and just a few others.

A match up from left field........ Fraser to the backline! Started his time at St.Kilda as a defender. Tom Hawkins is big, strong and pretty quick in straight lines. Sounds like Gehrig.

With Max and Fish still down back this would let Gram become more dangerous floating from HB to a wing and then get Dal picking up his possessions in the forward half of the ground.

Roo and Kosi now have more room to work in.

Crazy I know.... but?

accountable

Post: # 544019Post groupie1 »

I love it how suddenly everyone is an expert on accountability when the word didn't exist in footy 3 years ago.
It seems to me defence has 2 roles: 1/ prevent their opponent marking, and 2/ rebounding from the backline.
Some defenders are better at 1/ than 2/
Hudghton, case in point

there's 'defensive' and 'offensive' in this game - this 'accountability' idea is becoming boring because everyone drops the word like it's the only thing that counts... and like they know what they're talking about.

Isn't the first problem to man up opposition forwards with capable defenders to prevent them scoring, and rebounding is then a secondary problem? With Goose not yet available it seems Max on Mooney and Fish on Hawkins is the most likely start.
Or would they consider bringing in Gwilt, so as to free up Fish?

I'd play Hudghton on Mooney and Fisher on Hawkins. Hudghton towelled Mooney in the NAC cup game and could easily do it again. Not sure how Fisher would go defensively on Hawkins but maybe we could exploit him on the rebound and put him to the sword. Then hopefully, id we can put him to the sword on the rebound that may affect him and allow Fisher to do the job on him defensively.

Mooney - S.Fisher
Hawkins - Hudghton
Johnson - Blake
Stokes - Geary
Chapman - L.Fisher

Not ideal but it's the best we can do right now. Expect lots of flooding. We're missing Bakes and we need another Sam Fisher.

I like the idea of Kosi having a set straightforward task.

He needs a bit of spoon feeding at the moment until his mojo returns and he can roam free and hopefully start to run amuck again!

imho Mooney/Hawkins are the least of our problems..Ive never seen a side win a flag with less reliance on key forwards..

To stop Geelong kicking a winning score you have to stop Ablett/Johnson/Bartel/Chapman/Stokes etc etc kicking goals. We shut down Mooney and Hawkins, big deal, these 5 alone could kick a winnning score for them.

Against the Bombers they had 14 goalkickers and four others who kicked points..one short of the all-time record.

We either HARD tag at least 4 of them..and lose our midfield grunt in the process (I'd give my left one for Bakes in this game) or try and match em in a shootout and hope and pray that Kosi/Roo/G all have days out!!

fair point sRs..but I just thought the mood had drifted to "shut down Hawkins and Mooney and all our problems are solved" lol

Just for the record though, I reckon Sam Fisher would destroy him, but it would concern me that our 2nd best (or best according to some:-)) defender is deployed on about their 8th most important avenue to goal

I don't see Hawkins as a big threat - yet.

He did kick 5 last week.
But I believe that 3 of them were goalsquare goals where he was the man at the end of a chain of play, rather than earning them with contested marks/brilliant play.
And it was against Melbourne at the Cattery.
So I don't see him as the big threat.

In fact there are about 15 other Geelong players Ross should be spending more time working out plans to deal with.

Hawkins = currently over-rated

which means he's doing a perfect job of replacing Nathan Ablett

No..I was trying to get some discussion going on next week rather than the many and varied lynch Ross strings. (and it is a forum....for all to post....so nothing wrong from people puting their views)

If Tomahawk hangs around the FP though....do we want to waste Sam Fisher there????

We get more drive when he is across HB.

bring goose in. a good first up assignment for him. he's been playing full games at casey so fitness isn't a concern.

apparently his form hasn't been great but maybe he needs a challenge like this to get going again. just a thought

Until recently he was only playing part games....so I doubt he is fully fit yet.

Did not really play the pre-season...so is not match preacticed yet either.

While I would love Goose back...I doubt that he is ready.
