Who sledged Lovett?

Post: # 552235Post my les foote »

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/l ... 55886.html
ANDREW Lovett will not pursue a case against a St Kilda player whose highly personal sledge against the Essendon forward was clearly audible on Channel Seven's coverage of Friday night's game.

While the offending St Kilda player could not be identified categorically, a voice was picked up on an umpire's microphone, saying, "You bash your f------ missus".
You can hear this quite clearly on the broadcast. I had a look again and there seems to be one of our players leaning over him bringing his mouth quite close to the umpire's mic. There was also an immediate reaction from at least one Bomber.

I don't want to name anyone but if I was guessing at who it was, this guy wouldn't be the first to come to mind.

Essendon do not want to press this issue because I don't think baldly stating facts can be considered abuse. It's been proven in court that he does exactly what was alledged.

That's it gooner. a) sledging is allowed. b) what are they going to do? File charges against someone saying the truth? The only thing they could have possibly filed against is the use of the F word, but considering how many times it woud get used during the game, it would be a petty charge that would prob make Essendon look like a bunch of pussies.

I don't see a problem with it, sometimes it is not personal, its gamesmenship, just to put your opponent off and make them think about what your saying.

When he was younger Larry Bird once called James Worthy a Ni**er, during an important part of the game.

Worthy went nuts seeing if the refs heard it, Bird kept a cool and calm face, acting like nothing had happened.

Bird then hit the game winning shot seconds later on....

Yep you guessed it, James Worthy.

The Lakers never got angry about the incident, they knew they'd played right into Bird's hands.

Sometimes thats what a player does to get an edge.

My guess would be it was Leigh Montagna. It looked like it was those two who got stuck into each other at the end of the third quarter. At least now we might know why, because it seemed to come from nowhere.

Joey would be my guess too.
I saw him run upto lovett and have a go at him and later on when i saw the actually incident on replay the next day as soon as your heard the sledge come out joey had his back to the camera, was near to and umpire mic and ran off straight way.

Monty was on TV this morning and said that he a Lovett are good mates.

He said Lovett had put a knee into him, so he retaliated hoping it would fire up the saints.

there's gamesmanship and there's racism. The above story is clearly racist and has crossed over the line from sportsmanship.

I didn't see it, but on TV I think they said it was a player with blond hair. Once that would have been half the team.

I wonder what if anything was ever said on field to S Milne and L Montagna a few years ago.

I don't like sledging at all but it's hard to wipe it out.

Joey explained some of it this morning on Ch 7;- he and Lovett are good friends and Lovett had given him a corky just before 3/4 time and got him angry and he thought he'd try and lift the teams spirits by having a go;

'see you out sometime' was the context of the conversation after the game-
he had been surprised about the corky given they are friends,
yes all said - 'you know I didn't mean anything'

he speaks very well and doesn't hide from the questions.

Best spectator sledge:

Saints v North at Waverly.

A North player who also played for Fitzroy and Brissy had recently been in the news for some domestic problem or other.

A saints supporter (in one of those strange quiet moments in a game as the boundary umpire is about to throw the ball in) yells " Hey ......... you're supposed to f... women not hit them".

You should have seen the look on .......'s face.

Didn't realise there was another thread discussing this.

I looked through the thread titles and "Ch 10 News" didn't tip me off.

I'm all for a good sledge as long as it doesn't cross a line, I think as soon as you get personal you are crossing the line.
Something like "I shouldn't be playing today, your mum kept me up all night" is fine but IMO what Roo did was just bad sportsmanship, having said that though I don't think there should be any punishment, naming and shaming is enough for me...

:?

SO something personal that has no basis in fact is fine, but something personal that IS a fact is not?

If you're man enough to hit a woman, you're man enough to cop some sh1t for it.

As for naming and shaming... the general consensus is that it was a great sledge.
