Charlie Gardiner
I've watched his play with interest this year.
He's not the most talented player and especially his kicking which is atrocious whenever posts are involved.
But he seems to have good endurance and takes a good mark on the run. So I think he could play a great lead up role, running between the 50m arcs and presenting hard. Then a second option leading out of the forward 50 like Riewoldt or Kosi inside the 50 can present.
That way Nick doesn't take marks too far from the goals and can still use his pace and endurance.
Of course it all depends on moving the ball quickly which is one of our problems this year.

One day it's all got to be worth it.

Charlie wasa NOT our worst player on the w/e.. Did you happen to see Kosi, Raph, Scheider, etc etc - IMO all were worse than Charlie..

Dud, no. Star, not even close.
He's there to be a lead up forward. He needs to do just that; provide an option, lead up. Free up Roo from that role, and kick a goal or two every now and then. When he gets a shot from 40 out pretty much in front he needs to nail it. If he can do these things he's in our best 22. If not, then not.
So far, he's just over a 50% pass mark in my eyes.

gardiner is a forward, I expect our forwards when within 45 would kick for goal. Kosi kicks for goal, roo does within 40, so did gehrig.... heck I'll beat my bottom dollar that allen and fergi will if they are played.Halo Halo wrote:Oh thats great.. Out of 22 we have two players who dont look to pass it off - Yet cos Gardener does you single him out...

If we are talking about the same incident he obviously judged it out of his range (he would have been kicking from 50m +)...and hanballed to BJ who who hasa booming kick to havea shot.Solar wrote:

Nothing wrong with the decision...just BJ kicking into the man...
Look Charlie needs to be the Third Banana up forward. He is not good enough to be B1 or B2.
He is no star....but is no hack either.
Schneider Raph and several others were a lot worse....
Charlie is ina group of players that can either be just in...or just out of the team.
As a forward...I would ceratainly play him in front of Raph.
For this weekend would I mind trying instead of him either Allen or Ferg? No I would not mind at all.
I also would not be upset if he remained on the HFF either.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....

After all the news on players reading blogs today I think it reiterates the fact that calling players duds isn't very constructive. How does (potentially) crushing a players confidence help the club? Argue constructively about his effort, position, actual clangers that he has made but trite little comments about how much of a dud he is doesn't help anything. CG is no dud, perhaps not a footy virtuoso, but pretty early days to write off a reasonably handy player. Reasonable players play well when clubs play well, anyone who believes that Geelong has 22 football geniuses has got their head up their proverbial ##ses. Horse --> Cart, not the other way around.
