I want Max Hudghton to be our new defensive coach in 2009

I have no inside knowledge, just my opinion.

The guys BLEEDS R,W & B - as seen in Adelaide when he baked Goose for being squib and now in Brisbane when he took it out on L.Fisher.

The guy knows what footy is about, but his body is falling apart and no doubt will retire at season's end.

He may pull plenty of Hamstrings, but pulls plenty more Heartstrings!!!

Just what we need IMO - a former player, a Sainter, someone who knows the list, and most importantly DEMANDS respect from the playing group.

when max came back from injury in 2007 he played football.

he left his man to block space.

he intercepted the ball, and this nonsense in the defencive 50 eased up a bit and we certainly played much better.

might be a good idea, you could see his 'eyes for the ball' attitude.

as opposed to the zoning, protecting your man, sure they scored a goal, but my man didn't get free, attitude.

I know people will poo-poo this suggestion, but I reckon if an AFL team was smart they'd contract an American football defensive back coach to teach players how to run decent angles when chasing the ball carrier.

A bit of tackling practice wouldn't hurt either.

disagree poor idea saintspremiers. we need to get specialist coaches with previous experience, not untried players straight out the game.

we will never be saintspremiers if we continue to appoint coaches with minimal experience. enough said.

I reckon its a pretty good idea to be honest. I am a massive advocate for getting some Melbourne Storm boys to training to give us some tackeling advice. I admit I had not thaught of American Football tactics as an option but it doesnt sound too bad at all.

IMHO would be a great cross promotion for Rugby League if we went that way and fantastic promtion for the American game, there is a league here in Melbourne, I wonder how many people know of it.

I played a few years in the fledgling years of the Australian NFL. (Frankston Outlaws). The tackling used in the American game is a different technique used by Aussie Rules and would not translate well to our game. The Americans use their shoulders and heads in a lot of their tackles (thank god for the padding and helmets)and they aim very low (usually between the knees and hips to try and stop forward momentum.) In our game that would either result in a free kick or the tackler being removed on a stretcher with a broken collar bone and concussion.
IMHO all ofg our players would know how to tackle it more an attitude problem, you have to be aggressive and want to tackle the guy. The best tackler we have ever produced was Trevor Barker, the guy was a match stick but he had more guts and desire than anyone out there.

BBMD, I was talking more about how to chase than I was tackling. Hence why I was talking a defensive back coach specifically.

Our tackling is poor because we don't get in a good position to tackle. The mechanics of tackling have little to do with it IMO.

We need a belief that any ball that id coloured Red or Yellow is ours and no-one else has a right to hold it - let alone kick it!!!!!
