How to succeed as a coach
Anyone watching Euro2008?
Gus Hiddinck's done it again - never failed yet to take a national team to the knockout stages of any major tournament - impressive when you realise the last three teams he's coached - sth korea, australia, and russia.
They discussed him on SBS regarding how he does it - takes on a team and immediately has success.
They concurred -basically he examines the individual players in the team and creates a game plan based around their strengths.
This is the opposite of what Lyon has tried to do - the difference between the two is that one is a natural coach with the ability to recognize what works with the team and he knows how to implement it. The other has been involved in one successful style and is trying to emulate that style with a different team full of differing individuals with different abilities.
oh and Gus is a master at motivation!
You can't make coaches - you can only make them better!

Finally someone making sense. This is the absolute core to the situation. When Roos introduced the gameplan to Sydney it was because he examined his team realised that he had a smallish mobile forward line, hard nut, tough midfielders and a dashing but smallish backline, so he introduced a game plan that worked to their core strengths. We have almost the absolute opposite, yet we introduce the same game plan, go figure!!!

mate it's not footy, true - but you obviously haven't seen roy keane playing, or vinnie jones -two blokes that deliberately broke legs!bob__71 wrote:Soccer isnt a tough game where you need to encourage players to put their head over the ball and risk being flattened.
and not really relevant to the post.

Excellent point DS...desertsaint wrote:yep - and he's playing against teams that have a whole country of players to pick from -far better players!AP Erebus wrote:Kinda helps that Hiddink has a whole country of players to pick from... Not 44...
Apples and Oranges.
I agree that this has been RL's major problem, just because one style works for one playing group doesn't mean it is going to work with another...
Our strengths (up until this year) has always been our run from defense and our tall forwards however that is no longer the case because we have been using a carbon copy of another team's game plan... A game plan that relies upon hardness and accountability, one of this groups biggest weaknesses...
Accountability is so overrated IMO, as they say, the best defense is a good offense. I would have no problem with Dal Santo's opponent getting 20 touches a game, just so long as he was getting 30. We are now a team that don't trust their own ability and think that just as long as their man doesn't dominate the team should win... what a joke!!
