Want to make clubs more competitive in the second half of the season - introduce a form of free agency that allows teams to top-up with replacements during the course of a season.

People fear free-agency but the AFL's current list rules do more to create the perception of tanking than anything else.
Free Agency between clubs? or between AFL and VFL/WAFL/SANFL clubs?
If we're talking during the season then anyone not on an AFL list.

The AFL will never allow the trading of players during the season unless they are forced by a court order.
Remember when it did happen mid season?

Russell Greene one week a Saint, next week a Hawk
Frank Marchesani from Fitzroy to Carlton
Greg Wells Melbourne to Carlton
Russell Ohlsen Carlton to Collingwood

All midseason.

What about when they had that witch hunt of players who may have been zoned to another club previously and switched the player mid season.

Rod Waddell from Collingwood to Carlton was it?

I thought Richmond threw the last game against us last year, and while it benefitted us, I thought it stank.
Despite the obvious gains, and no matter what we would lose, Id still be angry if I thought we threw games in '00, '01. I'm not sure if the AFL does, but I'd hate us to lose our integrity, however naive that sounds.
As we all know, however, teams are "managed" to tank.

there is an old saying that states:
there's only one thing worse than hitting rock-bottom and that's hitting rock-bottom over and over which is exactly what richmond have done.

call it forward planning. call it tanking. call it whatever you like. but thats how modern footy works these days. you get to the top. you plunge dramatically and replenish your stocks.

worst thing you want to do is be stuck in no-mans land at 9th every year like the Tigers.

that why the eagles and port win flags. they play for flags only. none of this "making the 8" crap.

who cares about finishing 8th? who finished 8th last year? anyone remember?

The Eagles have missed finals 3 times in the past 20 years.

They have also finished 8th 3 times this decade.

In fact after finishing 8th 3 times, they then followed up with two GF appearances winning one of them.

Your point?

Eagles

2000 13th
2001 14th
2008 15th

Point is you should be in either 3 states for a premiership:

1. a genuine contender;
2. on your way up (those 8ths you mentioned) ; or
3. replenishing stocks

So my point is you want to be in one of those 3 states.

Fair to say Eagles are always in one of those 3 states. And your stats confirm this. If you are in State 3, you are in the "tank zone". succesful clubs will tolerate this at board, supporter and coaching levels because they know it means a better chance at reaching state 1.

So 8th is good whith a young list (dorks last year) (state 2) but not so good with an older list (Out of State) .

Thats my point. and im sticking to it.
