What the hell did bowden do?

Post: # 605758Post iwantmeseats »

Just got back from the dome. great great win.Anyway, all the talk is bowden and what he did to waste time at the end of the game. What happened exactly? Sounds like he could have shot someone!

Tigers up by 6 points with a minute to go.

Kicking out, when called to play on he stepped over the line to rush it.

Then he did it again.

So yeah... they ended up wining by 4 points with the siren going shortly after.

Smart and well within the rules, just people consider it cheap, and not football.

But yeah, he's a smart man. And you do what you have to do for a win.

He rushed a behind, took the kick in and waited for play on before rushing another behind. Effectively running down the clock without giving Essendon a chance at getting the ball.

Pretty clever if you ask me.

He deliberately rushed the ball behind a couple of times in the last minute, to eat up some time against the dons, who were pressing. I saw no problem with it at all.

Yep i guess if saints were in the position the bombers were in it would be a dirty act., but it is well within the rules and is smart play if you can pull it off!

Don't really like it but if it won a match I say good on him.

Essedon fans will revolt, but it was smart football. Essendon shouldn't have been in the position they were in anyway. Laycock missed two set shots and Stanton one during the last 5 minutes. If you don't want it to happen against you, don't let your opposition get into the position to do it!

I agree..very smart play...Reminds me a bit of the clock mangement in American sports..basketball and gridiron.especially.....can be frustrating to watch though....especially if your losing..but if if its legal..why not guarantee your side a victory..If he kicks to a contest and bombers collect and kick a goal..he's villian...smart move in the end..we might see more of this..he must have known there was lttle time remaining..

Essendon can't complain.
Sheedy took time-wasting-running-the -clock-down football to new heights with his sustained sideways/backwards passing.

What goes round comes round :D :D

Its not in the spirit of the game. The opponent has no opportunity.
Now because of his actions a rule will probably come in.
No one game is more important than the spirit of the game surely?

How can you possibly make a rule against it? It would stop people from doing it situations when they are genuinely under pressure.

What he did was within the rules, and really, it's not the sort of thing that happens everyday.

I didn't see it so can anyone who did tell me the following?

Before Bowden 'ruched' the ball over the goal-line, did he play on?
By play on I mean did he kick the ball to himself?
If he didn't, then surely he has not disposed of the ball correctly from a kick-in and the umpire should have bounced the ball on the 'square' line?

Isn't the rule that the person kicking out has to kick the ball to himself before he crosses the line of the 'square'?
That surely also applies equally to the goal-line as well as the lines on eithr side and front of the 'square'?

Yes, he kicked it to himself - so played on.

Because of what Bowden did I can smell a rule change in the wind.

Yes, he did kick the ball to himself before playing on.

All this "spirit of the game" crap. He is payed to win games of football, and they won the game of football. How can anyone say the "opponent has no opportunity". His opponents had all opportunities in the world, for 118 minutes of football. Miss set shots in the dying minutes at your own risk. Be good enough to kick the goal and you will win, simple. If not, tough luck.

Karma was in full swing alright LOL....suffer in your jocks Bombers!

a Bomber could have approached Bowden thereby forcing a 50m penalty and a subsequent kick in! ( unless he does a 180 and kicks it back through the goals for another behind ) then it would have been game on again!

but I think "Zig & Zag" at the AFL will have a look at it and quickly make some knee jerk reactive rule without too much thinking through or consultation as recent history would suggest

Can't have a go at the Dons supporters over this, every team would be bitching about it if it happened to them.

Essendon have pulled enough dirty stunts over the years. Nice to see one get paid back. What goes around comes around.

There won't be a rule change because there is nothing in it. This will likely ever happen once or twice a year...

Even if teams do it, the man on the mark will be more aware of it, and teams will strategise against it. Better still for teams complaining about it, how about you worry more about getting ahead in the first place!!!

It's disappointing to see IMO, it was good thinking and I would have loved it if I were a Richmond supporter, but maybe this is an occasion where a rule change is required, maybe another player has to touch it before it can be rushed through again. Maybe a ball up in the square would be a suitable punishment.

IMO that rule would strengthen the spirit of the game without changing the game we love too much...

And if you kick it to yourself (play on) and the opposition approaches you, you retreat... you're under pressure... then what? Numerous times have I seen St Kilda handball the footy back for a point in this situation.

A rule change would not be appropriate IMO.

bit sad if they change the rules over that

its just one of those things that if it happens against you you'd be filthy over it but if it wins your team a game then great - i'm sure Richmond would rather have won the game in finer style but the circumstances didn't pan out that way for them.

If Essendon hadn't of missed those couple of shots in the last quarter the situation wouldnt have happened and they would have won the game.

all this sportmanship stuff is crap - both teams are out there to win the game (especially here with a loss being goodbye to any slight chance of finals)

Joel or any other player doesnt have to look out for the other side's interests only what is best for their own side (aside from not intentionally or negligently causing injury to each other of course :D)
