Who is a walk up start this weekend?

Post: # 611763Post Sainter_Dad »

Well obvious we can call yell about who should be dropped but out of interest and to keep things positive - who will be guaranteed a walk up start?

My thoughts are:

Riewoldt (11.3 in the past 2 weeks - I like the sound of that)
Koschitzke
King (Outstanding 1%s last week)
McQualter
Jones
Harvey (You know you will always get 100% effort)
Milne (Should be a walk up start every game - he IS an X factor)
Eddy (Again with the effort)
Goddard (have to have the passion (but without the 50's))

Hayes (always give his all)

DalSanto (for his class)

Ball (for his courage/toughness in the contest)

Fisher S & Goddard (will be needed to hold our backline together)

Montagna & Gram (2 guys who can break the lines)

So - In three posts we have 16 as a walk up start - looks pretty positive to me! - lol

Jason Blake (has bounded into contention as a regular)
Hayes (always give his all)
DalSanto (for his class)
Ball (for his courage/toughness in the contest)
Fisher (will be needed to hold our backline together)
Montagna (can break the lines)
Gram (can break the lines)

So now for the remaining 6 - we need some more strength and speed in the backline .........

Allen,
Geary,
Gwilt (in Maxxy's absence)
Fergusson

Who will set the dome on fire - who is responsible enough for their opponent?

good post this one. quite revealing.
instead of the posts bagging players. this one has illustrated that picking 22 players aint easy.

from 17-22 we start to struggle to fit them in.

id say the cats dilemma is who is 22-25 and who to leave out.

we are done by 17/18. we need another 3 or 4 good players. not stars or anything. just good reliable types. wont be easy getting that depth once the new clubs come in. we need to be super smart this off season.

Lets hope Gwilt does half the job Maxy does.....then.....hopefully our backline has a chance.

Doesn't matter.

If the above all play well, you could include 6 escapess from the local old folks home and we'd beat anyone.

Alternatively, you could put 6 reasonable quality AFL players in as our bottom 6 - but if the top 6-8 don't play well, we'd get rolled.

bottom 6 get you through the regular season
top 6 win you big matches and finals

my top 6

Roo
Hayes
Maxy
dal
kosi
milne

These are the ones who when they play at their best we win. I have gram, xavier and chips at their best come close but the above six win you games.

The ones who slot in nicely around them are

blake
BJ
gram
King
joey
chips
(fit) x
ball
harvey
dempster
Thats 14 (16 including x) so we are looking at the other 8

CJ
eddy
mini

are both going well but still need 1-2 season of hard work to be a regular

So my bottom 5 current is in order

Gardiner M (just needs fitness, ppl forget his form earlier this year, allows kosi to play forward. If allen pushes for selection in the next 6 months this could change)
armo
geary
schneider
fiora
gwilt

Note: a match fir x and baker would walk into the top 15 but I can't see either being back this year.

im going to have to agree to disagree on this rodge. although bottom 6 duds can be made to look good when they have a good team - history is chock full of guys that appear good in a great team who move elsewhere and are duds.

but i still reckon you want evenness all the way down. otherwise saints would have a few more flags and so would gary ablett senior. good top 6 cant get you there. especially now when the possessions are so high and they share it around. what frustrates me is when you have one or two weak links in the chain - that get on the end of some really great work from others and stuff it up. make mes pull my hair our.

although i wouldnt mind see how the cats with with the 6 old escapees rotating off the bench through the middle. would make it very interesting.

Top 6... Bottom 6?

Interesting argument.

Let's say we play Geelong. All things being equal, their top 16 are equal to ours, but their bottom 6 are better.

Who's more important? Off topic, I know.

and yet if you get one of your bottom 6 to focus and work their butt off they can blanket one of the oppositions top 6. An example would be gwilt coming in and playing well on barry hall or mini shutting down mitchell.

I think the thing is you need to develop your bottom 6 to be consistant and do things at an average level (no clangers) and push your top 6 to play at a high work rate level

Well who is not a walk up startis a shorter list:

Armo...6 posies from 93% TOG . What he did was ok....just that there was not enough ok!!! Was quiet last week too and so perhaps time to swap with Geary.

Gardi.. played a shocker. however he previous senior games werea lot better and PA do not have Cox, and Gardi will not be playing FF again in a hurry.

Fiora..I do not have as bady as many do. I rate his last two games as ok. Not good, buta long way short of bad. however Birss may bea more worthwile option.

Schneider. Played a lot worse that Fiora. Was loose and often imprecisse with his ball use. Lyon is keen to have other options to goal for the finals though and may try and play him into form.

Gilbert well should not be a walk up start, but we have no one suitable to come in.

Max...only due to be possibly injured, otherwise is an automatic selection.

Definates Ins : = Kosi
Possible Ins: = Geary and Birrs...and if Max does not play Gwilt (not because he has eran it, but rather as there is no one else really).

Maybe Ferguson would be a good addition to this side at this stage, to share full forward duties with Kosi (when Kosi goes onto the ball). We seem to have forgotten him. He played quite well in his first game back, with 4 contested marks. The next game he played with a groin injury, and has not returned since. I cant think of a better full forward for us at the moment, with his marking ability would take pressure off Roo.

Don't know about walk up starts, but personally I'd like to see the FERG given another shot.

Has a great set of dukes on him and if there is ever a time for him to take the next step, it is now.

Has more value than C Gardiner I feel, in a forward line that without Kosi was screaming for more options.

So... if Max it's out is gotta be Jimmy in.

Kosi is in, and personally, I reckon we look much better with only ONE of King or MG in the team (not fussed who), with JK & JB sharing rucking duties.

So... OUT Max (inj), MG (rest) -- IN Jimmy, Kosi

With Geary a chance to replace Armo/Fiora. Schnieder will get another crack.

Where does FERG fit into all of this?

Would seem he's competing with Allen, Birss, Schnieder & Eddy for a position.

Is Gilbert in trouble?
