Was Sunday Milne's best game??

Post: # 635315Post saintsRrising »

Well I just watched the game on Foxtel this afternoon, after having also attended the game on Sunday in flesh.

Watching the reply only deepened my thought at the game that it was probably Milne's best game ever for the Club.

Now yes the caveat is that he was playing against a very week Essendon and that the ball was constantly being directed into our forward line.

But what impressed me about Milne was not just his 7 goals....but all those team orientated things he was doing and the discipline that he played with.

Add to this two very good marks and you had Milne the complete player.

Post his dropping he has stood up magnificently. He has obviously taken the criticism on board, acted on it and has improved as a player.

Yes he was very good in that game, kicked 11 straight.

But I thought that his game was a lot more rounded against the Dons.

Both great games for him though.

First time poster, long time viewer!!

Yeah it probably Milney's second best game. Can't go past his 11 against Brisbane.

Milne kicked 11 against the Lions in '05 BUT without him we still would have won by 70 points.

He made no difference to the result. His playing had little impact. Sure he kicked 11, but it was against a side as weak as the Essendon one we played.

His performance against the Bombers was certainly one of the best of his career.

IMO his 7 against the Tigers and his game up at Cararra were close to the two best of his career.

Yeah all good games by the little fella but the tigers game this year he was the difference, all the others we would have won anyway.
His second half of the season has been great team football on most occasions

His defensive efforts were as good as we've seen from him.

TBH I reckon he's copped a raw deal in the past when his workrate has been there but it hasn't resulted in a bag of goals. On the weekend we saw both.

IMO he's in career best form and we're splitting hairs if we think he's played better than he has in recent weeks.

I rate last week better, especially the last quarter. Against Brisbane, it is true to say that, while he played brilliantly, things ran his way. As well, his goal tally became a personal thing, not necessarily a team thing. While it was nice to see the Lions thrashed, not much hinged on the result.

Against Essendon, his effort was directed towards a team result, and not only was he brilliant but he showed extraordinary will to achieve that result. As it turned out, he kicked seven goals, but it wasn't his tally that mattered but the Saints extra percentage. Anyway, that was the way I saw it.

Well said. Throw in a couple of busted cheekbones too

The 11 goals straight in 2005 came from 16 disposals

Fast forward to this year, 7.2 goals from 24 disposals

Plugger kicked 15.4 for us in 1992 against the Swans ... and 12 on three or four occasions ...

I've always been impressed with Milne. Such an exciting player! And a match winner!! :D

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

Round 22 was better, Milne is a better team player now, keeps forward pressure up ans tackles much harder.

Plugger hada day out against Fitzroy while playing for the Saints...if he had not been taken OFF the ground for a bit he would have broken Fannings record that day as he was on song!

He kicked 16.0.

In 1981, he won the Coleman Medal again, despite missing the first third of the season because of a badly bruised back. In 17 games, he booted 127 goals at a staggering average of more than seven goals a game.

Yeah Plugger opened his account in '91 with bags of 12, 10 and 12 in his first 3 games    so he kicked 12 twice in the space of 3 games.

I think that year he kicked a total of 127 goals from 17 games.

Remember the bag 15 as well. I think he did a number on Fitzroy playing for the Swans as well and slotted the lazy 16. (16 straight IIRC).

But back on Milne.

He has IMO really stepped up and matured as a player.

In recent games not only has he been damaging up forward,,,,but for example if you remember the Hawks game he was swung into the midfield when the game was still in doubt and he helped to turn it our way with some great clearances.

Chuck in his two broken cheekbones......and all of a sudden Milne the Court Jester cum talented goal sneak is no more....and Milne the RESPECTED team-mate and LEADER is here.

Milne's football used to be the icing on the cake.....but now he is atrue game breaker.

Kangas game

Hawks game

Dons game being the difference in us grabbing top 4.

definitely his second best game for the club behind the 11 against brisbane a couple of years back.

every chance we wouldn't have made the top 4 without his SIX second half goals.

I would have thought the game against the Tigers this year was his best. We won by less than a kick and he was nearly solely responsible for that win. Where would we be with a loss that week?
