CJ vs the GAAAAblett

Post: # 726260Post saintsRrising »

Well we are not playing the Cats to Round 14.

But one potential match up I am looking forward to is CJ on the white hot Gary Ablett.

Throughout my footy barracking life have always looked forward to match-ups. The one on one battles are always a highlight for me and something to be looked forward to.

For a Saints fan one of the interesting aspects of being a Saints fan was that we rarely got to the best of Gary Ablett Senior in Saints games as we often had the right match up for him.

I remember one game where Winmar towelled up Gary Senior.

With Junior the guy is in outstanding form, and while Cats game is already being looked forward to for a number of reasons...how we seek to try and limit the Gablett is going to be very interesting.

Firstly no-doubt it will need to bea team effort.

But do we tag..or just go head to head?

Head to head could see Dal or hayes just trying to do damage and accepting that Gablett will as well.

However if we tag the job could go to CJ who now seems to be our No 1 on-ball tagger.

Very quick, a great tackler and with a very good workrate CJ performs well in this role as a tagger. BUT importantly CJ is not afraid to run off his opponent to create and kick goals himself.
So he has becomea tagger that limits his oppent...but wins his own ball and creates goals....this is a big plus.

If he gets to stand the Gablett, this will be his biggest challenge and the battle for me at least is a mouth-watering one.

CJ and Dempster (who is hopefully available by then) rotating off him.

Dempster may not have many games under his belt by then for the task (maybe in the GF though  ).

Gablett in full flight is a HUGE task...let alone someone that is not honed by enough match-practice.

If we get them in the finals the strategy should be straight forward and old school. Take him out off the square at the centre bounce. Harsh, but that's the only way you might stop him.....he's as tough as nails so it would want to be a good one

Ablett is like what Harvey was like in his golden days, untaggable.

Put Nick Dal Brownlow on him and let them go head to head.
What odds would you get on them to be 1 & 2 in the Brownlow this season?

I would like to see CJ against Joel Selwood, instead of Ablett

I know it's ancient history but I remember one Stevie Baker used to go ok against him - granted it was a fair while ago and young Gazza has gone up about 3-4 gears, but he'd be worth a shot!

I think the only "tagger" that's tried to get physical on him was Crowley from Freo.

Would be worth a go at least.

Let's just hope NDB knows that he has to perform for 22 rounds to win the medal (and go a long way towards helping us finish top 2!).

I only hope that the weeks leading up to our game, that CJ is allowed to prepare properly without the huge expectation we will no doubt have, if all is even, I think he will do us fine, if we build him up too much....?

dunno what happened there, wish I could remember what I said??

CJ does not have to prove to me his worth, just keep it up bloke!

Don't know why we can't tag both!

I'd have CJ against Selwood (who is this year's version of Luke Ball - he comes off with enough elastoplast around his scone!) and Baker against Little Gaz

Let's deal with rounds 5 to 13 first and then maybe think about round 14.

People on here are talking about keeping a lid on it, now CJ is the new messiah.

For Godssake he was a rookie less than 2 years ago.

I also remember Joffa Cunningham giving him a great go for his money.
So much so that they embraced each other after the game.

IIRC Spudda used to play on The Great Man (version 1) on the wing in his junior days, and did ok too!

If Bakers fit and ready, he has to be the man. Used to love watching him towel up Juddy.

CJ could be a second option.

Err why?????

And why does it matter when he was a rookie?
Who said CJ was the new messiah? Have another read of the OP. I have not said the he will be Gablett..just that I reckon that of our players that he is a logical match-up and that I am looking forward to it if it occurs.

It is topical and fun to discuss now as CJ has had some recent execellent tagging games...and gablett just racked up a lazy 46 disposals.

It would bea pretty boring forum if you can only talk about what is occuring in that week.

It is not necessarily about beating Gablett...but minimising the Havoc that Gablett can cause.

If CJ can limit him to a good game...rather than a BOG then CJ will done his task.
