What the hell happened.Bakes marks it late in the 3rd quarter deep in defence.. is then tackled and thrown to the ground and the resultant spillage results in a goal to the Lions at a very critical time....
Bakes is throwing his arms out as if to say what gives...either not a mark or Bakes should have got a fifty metre penalty.
Watson,Bruce and Denise didn't even seem to notice it FFS
Would be hell to pay if that sort of decision costs a flag one day
Did I miss something????

Absolutely NOT touched off the boot. No opposition player was even near the incoming kick. Umpire deemed Baker to have played on when going back on his mark. Quite a terrible decision by the man in green, and costly too.
one thing i noticed on the replay was roo wincing when he took a mark and landed on the leg that he had the op on...happened in the second quarter.......he then misses to the right from fairly close in.........none of the tv commentators pick up on it.......but i'm betting that his leg was a bit sore ....hence the poor shot at goal......

He did a small schuffle - about two small steps before checking himself.
If they apply that rule consistently then many many more players will get pinged for playing on.
That was probably the worst umpiring decision of the day.
Generally the umpiring was pretty reasonable.
But I am still confused with the Deliberate out of bounds rule.
Monty and someone else both clearly did kicks towards the boundary because they had no other options.
Umps let it go.
I think it is a stupid rule, but why don't they enforce it consistently ??

I understand that the umpire has to physically call 'play on' before the player with teh ball can be tackeld. If he is tackled before the umpire calls 'play on' then it is a 50m penalty.
I did not see/hear any such call and the Brions player was well over the 'mark' when Baker was tackled.
One of the commentators at the dreamtime game noted that he felt the umps had been told to put the whistle away this weekend and only pay the really blatant ones.

Reckon theres something in that.
that was robert walls
I liked the whole "put the whistle away" but itdoes tend to make the big mistake look terrible.
BTW have they stopped paying the 50 for holding up a player after they have marked (when you have not been in the contest).

The umpires advisory panel are a disgrace.
This business about
"This week we will focus on this ..."
"And we won't focus on that ..."
is pathetic.
What they should be about is achieving consistency.
Players, coaches and fans should know exactly what they can and can't do.
Instead we have this ad-hoc
"Looks like they are hot on .... today".
"Looks like they are letting ... go today"
NOT good enough.

The whistle blew and was followed almost immediately by play on. But Baker was going straight back.
The only thing I can think of is the umpire had a brain fade and thought we were kicking the other way. In that case Baker is running forward of the mark and Power has every right to chase him.
As it was, it should have been 50m which would have seen us looking to set up a scoring opportunity from 60m out rather than some Lion pulling one out of nowhere
It was late Q2... i recall because I was filthy all through half time. Generally I'm one who believes it all balances out in the end. I may get worked upp during the game, but at the end of the day unless it's a shocker, I don't reckon the umps are prime deciders of the game.
That was a doozy.
After arm wrestling 1.7 (us) against 3 even (them), that gave them a free hit and a big advantage in the quarter stakes by gifting a goal... instead of the 50 it should have been, followed by another inside 50 (and probable behind) for us.
Saw the ump signal the mark. Saw the ump signal play on, still don't understand why. I'll be surprised if I can remember any other call come October, but I bet I'll remember that one.

Played on, I think a few might be a bit upset that it he wasn't given as much latitude as others have in the past. Definitely the closest/contentious play on call by an umpire - but I think he was in the right to call it.
But we copped a lucky break in those deliberate out-of-bounds which weren't called, as were mentioned above.
No soft 50 metre penalties were paid, which is good to see. Nothing like a 'technical infractionment' which causes only the most minor advantage for the defensive team, that is completely blown out of proportion with a 50 metre penalty. Can really take the life out of a game.

how far off the mark did he go. From my view in the social club and on the replay it looks like he ran 5 metres backwards and half a metre to the side on the angle. 99% the player is told to get back on the mark or it's a 50.

Not sure how far he went off the mark but he did.
also made the mistake of trying to handball it when he was tackled. once he did that the umpire was certain to ping him.
if he'd just reacted like "wtf?" he might have got away with it.

Good point re: handball; it happened rather quicky. But I think the umpire might have just made the decision before the handball. Would be a matter of milliseconds though.
It didn't look like enough opportunity for an umpire to make a well informed decision, but that's from a seat almost 200 odd metres away. But I wouldn't call it a wrong decision nonetheless.

From where I was sitting he played on. From the other side of the ground (tv angle) it looked like he just took a few steps back, but he definetly played on in my books
